There are legitimate reasons to prefer MS Office over iWork, but the argument "because this is the way it has always been done" is by far the worst one.

I'd say it's the younger people that are changing the world for the better and the old people like yourself doing things for the wrong reasons that are slowing them down. Look at the success of Slack. By far a better collaborative experience than anything MS has done with Office/Sharepoint/OneDrive/Lync.

We don't need to do things the old way, let's do them better.

I strongly disagree, the younger generation are making it so the older generation have to step back in and fix things.

These apps are *really* slick... Even in "free" mode. I'm impressed so far.

Despite the hate here for Office 365 subscriptions, I personally am very, very happy about this.

- iPhone 6/6 Plus optimized.
- Powerpoint presentation mode for Airplay just like the iPad version (which I use very frequently).
- I have three Macs, a Surface Pro 3 and a Windows VM that I also need Office for, so a 365 5-machine license works perfectly. Plus access to 1+ TB of OneDrive space.
- I have to deal with the corporate world... MS Office formats are expected. While Pages/Keynote/Numbers are nice, I have to export/convert them anyway before sending out.

These apps make me love my iPhone 6 Plus even more.

WARNING: If you are not a 365 subscriber, be aware that Microsoft *removed* the presenter mode from Powerpoint in the free version. This is the single most useful feature of the app for me. Luckily I still had a backup of the version 1.1.3 ipa file.

Just use Pages and Keynote and export as the Office equivalent. The way I see it, Pages is as good as Word but much, much easier to use. Numbers is not as good as Excel and Keynote is considerably better than Powerpoint and still much easier to use.

Pages is a poor second place if a client or customer sends you a Word document with track changes, especially if you need to edit the document and send it back.

You may be right. But you will come to see, it is also the most valid.

Perhaps when you are a bit older, your ego won't make you mouth off to 6 billion people all at once, calling them "slow".

From the iTunes Description of Word for iOS -"Reflow view: on your phone, choose between the real document layout or an easy-to-read layout"

Gah! I've been begging to get this from Pages for YEARS!

Apple, you really need to take note here and catch up!

Smart move McSft. The folks who aren't going to buy Office will still be able to use this and that will make the other competing cheaper and free programs less likely to get off the ground. Businesses will still by the Office suite. McSft needs this as we go from the PC world to the iOS world.

Send in Feedback to Apple!

Just sent this to Apple Feedback today - 11/6/14

This is what MS just rolled out for Word: "Reflow view: on your phone, choose between the real document layout or an easy-to-read layout."

Dropbox support: open, edit, and save documents from Dropbox

I need these two features please to be able to use Pages on the go on my
iPhone 5S

Very smart move! I *hate* the notion of using MS Office on principal, but if Apple cannot keep up with certain key features that I use daily, I'll have to stick with the dark side. :(

Can you now create and edit free on the iPad version too?

Yes, looks like you can edit, create, and view on both the iPhone and iPad for all 3 MS Office Apps.

This is a great development for people who use Word documents a lot.

Combined with the new Dropbox connectivity, these apps just got a whole lot more useful! Thanks Microsoft!

The free version is crippled as bait to get you to buy a 360 subscription. Basic editing only and I would use another product out of spite because I hate being manipulated. The key usage for me on an iPad/ iPhone is track changes, which isn't available on the non subscription option.

So I wont get either. I am happy to pay for apps, Word could be $12 to $20 and I would happily pay it, but I won't buy a subscription for an office app.

Microsoft recently began providing all of these apps full featured on iOS to my school for free. As well as Office on up to 5 PCs/Macs. I'd say they're doing pretty good right now. Promptly deleted Numbers and Pages from my iPad and iPhone.

I do wonder how much of Microsoft's most welcome behaviour recently stems from a culture change under Sataya Nadalla. I'm sure this newfound openness towards iOS and Android wouldn't have been quite so forthcoming or the results so useful under Steve Ballmer.

Just acquired a Surface Pro 3 for serious Office work (have Office 2011 on my MBP but sorry, Office 2013 trumps it for serious Office work). Great device that now correctly competes with ultrabooks and the MB Air, as opposed to the ipads. Good to know that no matter what device I now have to hand (MBP, iPad, iPhone, Surface Pro) Office and OneDrive has me covered for the work I need to do.

Downloading as we speak, can't wait to see REAL EXCEL on my iPad ... A dream comes true and I even would pay for pivot tables ... Oh, I miss my pivot tables ...

Meh...

I moved away from using Office (other than at work) a long time ago.

Classic too little too late. Apple Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are great.

Tennisproha, I tend to agree that iWork has a lot to offer, especially Keynote, but I've found some vital features missing from Pages that keep me from making it my primary document app. It doesn't flag for review a lot of basic grammar mistakes (two spaces between words in a sentence for example). It also doesn't reflow on my iPhone 5S screen. I need to be able to edit documents on the fly without scrolling left and right (up and down is plenty thanks!) to find the little fragment that needs my attention.

Word for iOS has now provided both of these. Now there is just one thing left before MS Office can claim total victory: getting rid of the stupid, headspace-gobbing ribbon on the Mac version. Sidebars don't eat up prime document-viewing real-estate.
