I couldn't stand the fact that Microsoft would charge only to view a file.

They NEVER charged to view a file, only for editing.

I still will not sign up for a Microsoft account though just to use the app.

Ummm... Office 365 today comes with 10 TB of OneDrive storage, not 1 TB, and that is soon to be unlimited. The 1 TB offer was replaced a couple weeks ago.

Why would I want such a limited Office experience?

If there's any reason to go with Microsoft Office over any other solution it's that it's the closest to the set Microsoft standard for obvious reasons.

The basic features mentioned here and then some I get anywhere else anyways...

I mean it's still a free app, but to me this is just clogging my device's valuable storage for free.

I know! I'm think something similar when I go to Costco and I'm offered a food sample - why are they just giving me a taste? I deserve an entire case -- for free! /sarc

Really? I got 1TB when I subscribed last month  but I'll never use anywhere near that so...

You can certainly distinguish the younger people here from those that need MS Office to put food on the table.

One day you kiddies will find out that iWork will get you laughed out of the office. And if you send your colleagues a spreadsheet done in "Numbers" well, you might get laughed out for good. :)

Some of you might get through college by converting your Pages docs to Word if they're simple enough but eventually you'll have to get on board with the rest of the world when you get jobs that require document collaboration.

There are legitimate reasons to prefer MS Office over iWork, but the argument "because this is the way it has always been done" is by far the worst one.

I'd say it's the younger people that are changing the world for the better and the old people like yourself doing things for the wrong reasons that are slowing them down. Look at the success of Slack. By far a better collaborative experience than anything MS has done with Office/Sharepoint/OneDrive/Lync.

We don't need to do things the old way, let's do them better.

Wow these apps are really nice. Way better than both Pages/Numbers and Google Docs/Sheets IMO. Even better that it has Dropbox support. My new go-to productivity suite now.

I don't think it's a question of age, more of what a person is exposed to.I am in accounting major so I deal with word and complex Excel files constantly, I work would be terrible for me to use here. However many people in the humanities for example that will create reports and send the reports out without collaboration do not need office, they could get by with alternatives.

I need compatibility, but I also need features that excel offers that no other alternatives offer well.

IMO, the "killer feature" here ....

...is the fact that PowerPoint users can now present their slide deck right from the .PPT file saved on their iPhone.

Keynote users have had this type of "use phone as the remote" capability for a while now ... but this brings parity to the Office users on PowerPoint.

Not if you already drank the Kool Aid and are now essentially paying $10/month for a 1TB (soon to be unlimited) cloud storage.

10TB, that's 50tb for the 5 of us and waiting for unlimited.

Check your account now and see if it's 10tb. We signed up about 3 months ago and it went to 10tb each when they announced unlimited would be coming.

It's the best deal out there for storage alone, not even counting office 365. Plus an hour of skype international each month.

Here we get free liquor samples at costco also.:)

Great point though, complaining about free is definitely a 1st world problem.

Seriously people, what more could you want from Microsoft? They've now made their mobile office suite largely free. Since releasing Office for iOS they have been very aggressive about updating it and it's more than decent. If you need the full programs you now get access for mobile devices, 5 computers, a bunch of Skype credit, and unlimited OneDrive storage for $99/year!

Sheesh.

Glad to read a few more considered responses to balance out the "M$ sucks. Office sucks!" crowd.

Basic editing etc for free and there are still complaints? Fine. Don't download it, don't use it. Be happy with iWork, Google Docs or whatever else works for you.

For the rest of us who need to regularly interact with the world of business, MS Office is the default format and tool for information interchange. Filling out .docx application forms using any tool other than Word risks incorrect rendering, introducing layout errors etc. Telling prospective employers that "M$ sucks!" is simply not an option.

Basic editing on iOS & the web for free? Or full iOS editing + desktop office + copious amounts Office integrated OneDrive storage for a fee?

Given that I've happily paid Evernote £40 per year for offline notes syncing, increased storage, priority OCR scanning of images etc then the various Office 365 tiers don't look so bad.

By all means avoid using Office if you don't need it, but for the rest of who do NEED it the Office 365 suite and increased OneDrive storage is improving at a fair clip.

Sheesh.

Quite. Just on storage alone it's a better value proposition than the paid tiers for iCloud Drive) albeit without iOS backup etc.

I won't of course, I'm just trying to make sense of this addition that ends still before some very basic features like pivot tables.

Glassed Silver:mac
Pivot tables are not a "very basic feature".

The entitlement mentality is alive and well. :(

Not all of us are paying $10. You can pay $8 month for a 1-yr subscription if you didn't shop around. $5.88 if you did. Why do people always quote the per-month rate?

They tell me after I bought the subscription. :D
Me too (a ways back). But with that we also get a tera-byte of Onedrive space (much cheaper than iCloud and DropBox) and the ability to install the full Office 365 suite on what, 4 computers? Still a great deal in my book.

Edit: Covered more accurately by the responses above

Onedrive now has unlimited storage:

https://blog.onedrive.com/office-365-onedrive-unlimited-storage/

It will be free for a lot of users.

The current rumor is that it'll be free for consumers to upgrade to on their current PC, but will still cost OEMs money to install on a new machine, and of course enterprise licenses will still remain the same.

I think this is a pretty decent move, myself. Any revenue MS might lose on the upgrades can easily be made back and then some through their various services. Why add a paywall in front of the better money generator? Make them easy to get to.

Oh, shut up and die, Microsoft. No one likes you.

So you would pull Windows from Running on Apple products, and block any Microsoft products from running on macs also.

Good luck with that, and watch Mac sales fall off as in the real world that's what people need to do their jobs.

Irrespective of what you like personally.

I'd back it happening also :)

Since I first get MBP 5 years ago, I have always used iWork and have never felt I missed Documents, Excel or Powerpoint....

I do not see any use for these on my iOS or OS..

It should be good for PC users who are migrating to OS X and iOS system...

Some of us live in two worlds for many reasons and it's not gonna change !!!!

I just downloaded the iPhone ones and am fairly impressed so far.

The free editing in Excel lets me create and filter tables within the spreadsheet, and PowerPoint plays all my slide animations correctly for a fairly complex presentation. :)

This is a bit of a meh, both for non-Office users and Office 365 subscribers. I recommend Office 365 to anybody who wants the full Office experience. Unbelievable value for money with unlimited OneDrive storage space.

I suppose its cool for them who want compatibility with docx/xlsx/pptx files and just to edit some basic stuff on the go.
