I take your point on the MS Office being able to make you money. Very good one. I also take your point on the 5 year plan being subject to accidents and defective parts. This conversation is edging dangerously close to comparing costs of Macs verses PCs so I think I'll drop it here. That's another thread.

$100 is absolutely nothing for a product that not long ago used to cost 100's for just 1 licence for a never-to-be-upgraded version of Office.

With Office 365 I can install on 5 Macs/PC's, 5 tablets & 5 smartphones and always have the latest version. Plus unlimited online storage (1TB is being migrated to totally unlimited).

I'd say that's a great deal. If you don't use Office much then of course it's not a good deal.

Anyone who says Office 365 is a rip off or a bad deal is simply wrong. There's nothing bad about what MS are offering. If you don't like it then continue buying 1 licence for a standalone version (which works out costing at least 3 times as much), which was one of the only ways to buy Office before Office 365 existed.

I respectfully disagree that $100 per year is cheaper than $100 every 3 to 4 years (the time since the last Office for Mac Update). I do agree that having the 1TB and ability to install on multiple computers helps ease the conscience when buying an Office 365 subscription. I would never say that Office 365 is a rip off and whole-heartedly agree that it is a good deal considering the alternatives. It is not, however, a purchase to be lightly made.

And perhaps my feelings on this are not so strong as they would be if I had been forced to pay full price for my copy of MS Office for Mac. I get a wonderful company discount ($10 a copy).

Office for PC used to cost around £350 for the PC version (Professional). Standard used to cost around £100 less.

You are right in that the Mac version was a lot cheaper, but that doesn't give you anything close to what Office 365 does. However, the Mac version of Office was woeful in comparison and completely stripped of features. Thankfully the new Outlook app makes the Mac version much better value for money and when the rest of the suite is updated is will be even better value for money.

With my employee discount, I could get 5 licenses for $30.

I'm not playing fair. I know. :D

It is a good deal $100/yr for the 365. No argument there. I just wish it was less for my purposes.

Lets be honest here. Right now we have 10tb each, that's 50tb, of storage space and it's going to unlimited. I get an hour of skype international each month. If you buy a card through amazon us it's 72 bucks a year. The bonus is you get office also.

So to recap it's 100.00 a year (72.00 on amazon) for unlimited storage for 5 people pluse skype and office. It's the best deal out there by far for storage alone.

Mind you, those wonderful discounts apply to the older stuff, not this shiny new 365, though I should look that up and see what I can get now that you mention it ... meh, Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 or Office for Mac 2011 for $9.95

You can't really compare these... Google Doc is just a toy compared to Desktop versions and even Page lacks of lot of essential features Word has. I would not do a complex document with complex layout and images or a hundred pages document with Google Doc or even Page...

Maybe with Pages. It is still a good document app. Though I will admit that I have to use Word to get done what I need.

Oh I did not know that. All I remember is installing the Office mobile App and it was asking me for my 365 account, which I don't plan to ever have either.

Page is nice to write a letter. But I would not write a hundred page document with it, where I need to handle complex styles, to have a table of content, a table of figures... Even OpenOffice doesn't work so well - my girlfriend has to use it for some clients and it's a real nightmare with really huge documents (several dozen GB) where it slows to a crawl and takes ages to save.

If I had to pick some other word processor than Word, I would take LaTeX over Page, it's a bit of a pain to use, but at least it handles huge documents and it renders beautifully...

Unless Microsoft updates office every year. For instance, Mac version of office is still 2011 and the new version is not coming until late 2015. If you paid for subscription you would've been paying for four years without any significant updates.

Several dozen GB?! What the heck are you stuffing into those docs? (If I may ask).

She's doing city planning documents. So that's several hundred pages documents with high defs photographies, Autocad exports and the like meant to be printed in A3 at high resolution. They also always work in revision mode which tends to bloat the files some more.
InDesign might be actually better for that, but they're not trained to use it and their clients don't have it.
Word handles it pretty correctly, but OpenOffice is a nightmare, especially on slow PCs. A lot can be said against Microsoft, but the memory management in Word is pretty good (you can use it to open enormous log files for instance, that would not fit into memory in notepad or the like).

Very interesting! Thanks. I know an architect who might benefit from that knowledge. I take it that Pages doesn't handle such large files as well as Word?
 
Google Docs is a joke. The only thing going for it is that it's free and on the cloud, so it's easy to collaborate and share with others.

Pages is a dumbed down version of Word with compatability thrown out the window. Have you ever tried exporting to docx or doc and have the formating remain completely intact? In my case, rarely.

In a modern corporate world, every office has Microsoft. I love that microsoft is trying to break into iOS, and I'm sure Apple will sell a lot more iPads because of Microsoft's help.

I share my subscription with my household, so it's 5 computers for the subscription.

Good job everyone on jumping to conclusions.

a) Yupp, won't install, don't exist they make this change for everyone. All I mean is that even with this limited feature set most alternatives still trump MS Office's free mode. Except for compatibility maybe, but when we're talking about the limited feature set, I've personally seen iWork work well on that level.

b) I'm questioning the relevance of this change, not that they add something to something that's free.

c) I don't expect the full Office suite on my iPad for free. I don't have it and I have no intentions to get it. And I don't expect them to change their business model, which would be the requirement to getting me into buying it.
Won't rent Office, sorry Microsoft.

:eek::eek::eek: Everyone hates subscription but I don't think other office apps can match the feature set of Microsoft Office.
