Just curious as I'm new to the Mac world...why wouldn't you upgrade to the latest OS? Is the machine older?

Late 2008 MBP, 2.4 gHz core 2 duo, upgraded to 8GB RAM and 512GB SDD, runs like a champ.

I'm usually ready to try the latest OS; I gave Yosemite a try, it slowed down the MBP (admittedly before I upgraded to SSD) so I went back to Mav.

Most of the really cool bells and whistles on Yosemite don't work on my machine because of its age, so I don't really miss anything.

Mav runs very smoothly, so I'm happy; might try Yosemite again after the 10.10.3 release. The lure of the new photos app may be too strong.....

Trying to download from the MS site but get to 8.4mb and the download times out, guessing there are lots of people downloading right now :)

Would anyone mind MD5 or SHA1'ing OfficePreview.pkg for me? I had a bit of a bumpy download and I'd like to check my download's integrity.

MD5 (OfficePreview.pkg) = e9897620768f589443c10813aaf164ec

That's what I get using the built in MD5 tool on OS X.

Outlook and Mail

I like using Outlook for my Apple Mail - it's just much easier to format mail messages. However, while I managed to add my Mail account to Outlook and receive incoming messages I can't figure out how to properly connect for outgoing messages. It was very easy on my iPhone.

Sorry, I didn't see this, thank you

Random question, do you have inertia scrolling in Word? Also, what about the ribbon, the text in CAPITALS or not?

No, Word seems to scroll fine for me. Here's a screenshot of the ribbon for me:

This is interesting. Some people, including Mac Rumours has capital letters in their ribbon.

On top of that, there doesn't seem to be a scroll bar in MacRumors version of Word, but there is in my build (as in it doesn't auto hide). In Excel and PowerPoint of that same build, I have pinch to zoom, inertial scrolling and three finger click support.

On Word, I don't have any of that. I downloaded it pretty much straight away. I think there might be two different builds.

Edit: I can only assume maybe that Microsoft's screenshots are mock ups/newer and Word will get the inertia scrolling etc in Word later on, or if earlier downloads were accidentally an earlier build.

Does it allow you to customize the Ribbon, like in Office 2010/2013?

Huh. I imagine so...but here's what comes up when I go to change Preferences for the ribbon...guess it's not built out yet:

Settings I use for icoud mail (.me)

mail.me.com (server should be 993)
make sure SSL is checked

smtp.me.com
make sure SSL is checked along with Override default port (should be 587)

Click on more options. Make sure Authentication is set to incoming server info

I must say I'm torn. I don't want to try this because I suspect I'll like and use it and then I'm going to be down $100/year for a subsciption and using all that 1TB of OneSpace to back up my family photos and videos and the more I think about it I think this isn't such a bad thing

You can find plenty of Office 365 personal subscriptions for much less. I just bought one from ebay (sealed card) for $23. Amazon sells it for $46.

You can also stack subscriptions. So, for instance, if you find it for $23, buy several of them. Input all the codes and they stack. I currently have my Office paid through 2018. :p

Trying to download the preview over here in the UK and the link to initiate the install is slow to load then fails.

Anyone else with the same problem?

Many people are running into that. A couple pages back a couple mirror links were posted.

But can we finish writing our screenplays in Starbucks using Microsoft Office 2016 running on the 38mm Apple Watch?

Change screenplay to novels and you sound like my husband.

He happens to be the world's most awesome person in my opinion. :D

Outlook Capabilities

I won't be able to download for a few hours, but I have been dreaming of several capabilities in Outlook.

- Can tables be created and edited in a message?
- Can an Outlook item, such as an email, be attached to a message?
- Are there voting buttons?
- Is there the option to delay sending a message?

I can't believe I'm actually rooting for Microsoft to beat Apple at their own game. Pages and Numbers are lame for anything but the most basic document or spreadsheet, and Apple's quality really sucks these days.

Powerpoint needs to die in favor of Keynote, though. Can't we get something better than either of these options?

I tried using Numbers for my engineering econ class. After 2 assignments, I was pretty much convinced that anyone who says that they are using numbers for any real productivity is either lying or they must not really be doing anything productive and only think that they do.

I can use Excel all-day. The Excel 2013 Office for Windows 8 is amazing, doing assignments is actually fun.(I know, I don't get out much)
