It's lovely and all that... but you can't actually use it comfortably on your laptop.

Typical MS, it's like their marketing people doesn't even know what they are advertising.
The ad started okay, until it mentioned USB as the advantage of the Surface Pro 3. Really? The Macbook Air has two, and a Thunderbolt port. Oh, and the 13" Macbook Air has a standard SD card slot, while the Surface Pro uses microSD. And, one should never forget that the keyboard is not included. Seriously, MS has been sucked at marketing forever, and looks like they don't bother to look into the mirror.

They should've play the strength of the Surface Pro 3. Like the screen quality and resolution. The Macbook Air is using old TN panel. This is something Microsoft could've pushed, but no, it has USB slot!!
And play the strength of Windows such as networking, app ecosystem, gaming, etc. Seriously, there are SO MANY ways MS can show how the Surface Pro 3 is better. But nope, let's talk about USB and running Skype, which Macs can and better (2 USB, Facetime integration for iPhone users).

Having used Linux on my all my personal boxes since 2006 what Apple and MS do are interesting in an abstract way but I don't feel threatened by either. I work all day on a Mac and it's nice to come home and use my Linux it works the way I think because I built it neither Apple nor MS would improve that in any way.
Why would I switch to garbage windows 8? OS X Yosemite is perfection. Love continuity and handoff. The ability to answer iphone calls and send SMS on mac has been a lifesaver.

It does. Win 8 is a solid OS, it's just a little clunky. Seems far more consistent than my OSX on my rMBP - notably, any video destroys my battery life, I've had itunes crash, and some annoyances on the internet connection.
There is - you can screen mirror to smart tvs on the same network. It's actually pretty awesome.
Oh, I never meant to imply that OS X is faultless. I consider myself a quite seasoned user on both platforms (20 years on Windows, 10 on MAC), and am convinced that it is easier to configure and maintain any OS X based system compared to Windows. People might call OS X dumbed down, but those people forget that the majority of users have got no clue how to configure and maintain an OS. To be honest nowadays these things should by managed by the OSes themselves. And OS X does so more effectively than Windows.
You misunderstood me. I didn´t say it wasn´t impossible. What I said was that MS has the market power to push new technologies. Even more so than Apple. They could have pushed for a migration from VGA connectors to a wireless standard. Even DVI has been here for more than 10 years and still in my work I see 95% VGA connectors to projectors.

How is it ageing? It is being spec updated at least once a year and is still the design template for many of the competing companies. Or are you just bored with the design?

What are you talking about, Kaspersky isn't malware. It does a pretty good job of stopping malware, by locking down your system so much that you can't actually use it, there by stopping it from becoming infected.Does it come with Malwarebytes pre installed? Kaspersky?

When you say Windows runs faster on your "top of the line" mac, are you comparing it to a same generation, comparable top of the line PC?

Have you actually used a new SP3? The improvements from the first two generations are huge. The SP3 is now fully usable on your lap. Yes, there are going to be times when a laptop would be better suited to the surface you set it on, but frankly, the SP3 works great in the majority of situations now. I used mine extensively on an international flight last week, from my lap in the lounge to the tray table and my lap on the plane. I have been using it frequently on my lap at home. It works perfectly fine, and the new keyboard is surprisingly ok - even as a keyboard snob myself.
The new pen is much better than the old ones. It's the best stylus I have seen on a device by far. No real lag, no offset, and no issues even at the extreme edges of the device.
See above. The new kickstand and keyboard combo are surprisingly flexible.
Overall I'm pretty impressed with the new SP3 after trying and mostly giving up on a SP1. The stylus lets it do things that no laptop ever can. The kickstand and removable keyboard gives you instant flexibility that is surprisingly useful and pleasant to use.
Still, there are a couple of deal breakers that would have me hesitant to recommend one to anyone who wasn't very technically adept.
- Scaling to external monitors is still a mess. You get either items too large or too small on one screen or the other, or blurry content.
- The thing still barely functions as a tablet. There is literally NO way to stream music from the thing with the screen off other than the extremely limited Xbox music. No Pandora. No Spotify. Nothing.
They still need to work out these kind of usability 'surprises' before regular people will be willing to take a chance with a device like this.
It's funny, as a (very) long-term veteran of these parts, to see an honest to goodness Mac vs PC thread! I thought, in these days of iOS, Windows Phone, wearable computing, the cloud, Satya Nadella, Google-as-the-true-enemy, facetwittergram and so on that these were a thing of the past!
Hopefully for the holidays we'll start getting blurry pictures of hardware taken in elevators! Maybe something about wide pipelines and a couple photoshop bake-offs? Junkyard Dawg around?

Microcrap needs to give up the ghost on trying to be better than Apple. They never will be when they keep so poor quality software and bloatware. YES there are some good features in the SP3 (ironic it sounds like service pack 3) like the stylus and detachable keyboard. BUT THATS IT. Windoze is still buggy and crashes all the time and generally junk. OH and the app store is HORRID.

I do like how they've tried to make Yosemite look as ugly as possible, by enabling the high contrast dock, using the old Mavericks wallpaper etc.
It seems based on many people's opinion, they didn't really have to work hard at making Yosemite ugly, it already is. I don't mind the look of it, but it does need more contrast to make it easier to make things out.
The surface pro is neat the boss has one but for me I ordered a loaded Macbook Air yesterday. I will say this the Surface Pro is durable the boss was carrying it around by the case (image someone carrying an iPad by the cover thats about what it looked like (I think idiot but you can't call the boss that)) and it came loose. The surface fell about 4 feet onto the concrete floor surprisingly it did not break. It wasn't one of his most brilliant moves. I laugh every time I think about it.
While the Apple TV now lets me mirror my Apple devices directly to it via bluetooth and wifi, without the need to be connected via a wifi network.
I really don't like negative advertising; thing is, I do thing the Surface 3 is a good product, and it could actually suit my needs better than a Macbook model, though OS X and consistency would probably prevent me from switching (Windows 8.1 isn't bad and 10 is better, but the whole Windows OS is still built on a horrible foundation of cruft that doesn't seem to be getting pruned quickly at all).
But the negative advertising guarantees I won't purchase a product, no matter how good (they could reduce the price to £50 and I still wouldn't) as I think it's toxic. I mean, advertising is pretty bad in general, but a product should be advertised on its own merits alone.
