I will need a new laptop in early 2015 and I'm really tempted by the Surface Pro line. I have been waiting to see if Apple will release the Macbook Air with retina display, but if it's going to be released in October I cannot wait that long. I've always used Windows and am hoping to switch over to a Mac, but I'll still need to install Windows on it. The Surface Pro really looks good but I'm worried about how functional the typecover would be.

Love how they fail to mention that the surface doesn't have an x86 processor so it's not a desktop-class computer. How can they even compare the macbook air and the surface? different uses.

It's a core I7 genius. Apparently its the processor in your brain that isn't up to snuff.

I walk by the one in the Mall of America all the time. Its like PRIMO space by a HUGE entrance and it is still empty.

Same here. They opened a Microsoft store a few doors down from the Apple Store at my local mall. It's massive. And very empty. Those stores are a money pit for Microsoft, there's no way in hell they're producing any profit. Microsoft keeps them open just for brand awareness, but I don't expect them to be open for much longer.

surface pro 3 has an intel core i5

hmm? im pretty sure it does. thats one of the selling points of it, that it combines tablet functions but when you want to do "real work" i.e classical desktop-style computing, you have the full windows on it with all the apps you're used to. this is a great option for a lot of companies that have been using windows since the 90s and are too conservative to switch to mac and want to retain all their old software

The average punter that would actually consider buying a Surface is doing spreadsheets, and probably Word. They're not going to care.

It comes in three flavors, i3, i5 and i7

my bad

Can I use the keyboard on my lap?

...Oh. Well, come back when you've mastered that feature and we'll talk.

And if you could bring your high-end prices down to within a hundred bucks of an equivalent Air, that would be a big plus as well.

I quite like the Surface but it's ridiculously over-priced compared to Windows laptops, which is presumably why they're trying to pitch it against the MBA instead.

Okay...

I would really like to see the full power of MacOSX on my full range of devices. Yes, on my iPodTouch I don't expect to be doing a whole lot of Adobe Illustrator work but all the applications from iOS and MacOSX should seamlessly work across all the hardware. My MacBookPro's screen should have touch and I should be able to simply remove the screen from the unit to have it become my tablet. Waste of materials having both a MacBookPro and an iPad completely separate and total waste not being able to use applications and data across them.

Sure, one day. But right now, you'd have to sacrifice usability, reliability, battery life, and power.

So, you know, physics and ****.

Yeah, but can'tcha Skype on a MacBook, too? I mean it's really eas--
Oh, forget it.

Um yeah...it clearly says that in the ad. That it works with Mac. The point is that it's an alternative to facetime. Not that apple doesn't support it.

Facetime only works apple-to-apple. Skype works across all OS's and platforms.

The ad is just pointing out that if you want facetime functionality on a surface, you can use skype instead.

Boot camp or dual boot

Why, when one can boot camp in Windows or dual boot in Parallels or Virtual Box.

LOL what a joke.

I have a friend that works at a very large electronic store, umm lets just say they fry things, anyway the most returned item is the Surface Pro 3! LOL

Why are they returned?

Most of the Surface Pros are broken out of the box and the rest are returned, because they suck. Literally, customers do not like the product. Regardless of wether the customers are Win or Mac people, most of the Surface Pros are returned.

Also, employees would rather sell a different product.

Since Apple Mac sales, especially laptops are booming and PC sales are sinking, the impact is pretty small. MS is trying to conflate a tablet with a laptop, a real hard job. These devices are generally bought for jobs that leverage the different strengths of touch laptops and PC laptops. This wil be a hard game to really succeed with one OS.

If this is not successful or sufficiently successful, then will there be 3 OSs phone, tablet, and laptop/PC and if so will they have common scaleable base. Sounds like a lot of work still to be done.

Wait, so they're saying that people using a Mac FaceTime and iMessage, and they say that people using a surface does Skype. But then they go on to say that Skype works on Mac. All this is telling me is that Mac users prefer iMessage and FaceTime to Skype.

Almost seems pro-Apple.

In the commercial...I don't get why he's so fascinated with the kick stand out of everything.

Right? "Wow, I wish MY laptop held a relative angle between the keyboard and the monitor!" Like that hasn't been a feature of every laptop since the dawn of laptops. The kickstand is actually a step backward, really. Though I'll give them props for pushing something like that as if it's an upgrade...

If you say so ....

My opinion is, some of the stuff they spend time talking up in their commercials is nit-picky, like the fact the Surface Pro 3 has a kickstand in back. (Who cares? Many iPad cases add that functionality too, and you're probably going to buy some kind of case or cover for one anyway. Regardless, you're talking about a 50 cent piece of plastic making up the kickstand.)

I don't think the Surface Pro 3 is a bad piece of hardware. But really, it just serves as your Microsoft Windows alternative for a "high end" tablet device. If that's what you're after, great. But I see little reason it's actually a superior solution to iOS for the general tasks most people expect to do with one.

Y'know what? I think MS makes some very good points.

surface is the zune of tablets. get real microsoft you have duds on your hands

I personally prefer Macbook Pro, but I can see why some others prefer the Surface 3. To each his own. I think it is good that Apple and Microsoft trade the marketing barbs. They will both be better for it. It is funny to me that people on this forum take it so personally when others extol the competition. All that should matter is what you think of it. Life is too short to do otherwise.

Apple Stores have one of the highest returns per sq.ft. In fact I think the Regent Street store in London is one of the most profitable stores in the world.

Seems oddly timed. I mean most people will have spent all their money by now, thanks to Christmas. Why not roll this out in few months?

Same with the Tyson's Corner Microsoft store ...

Every time I've been to Tyson's, the Microsoft store barely has anyone in it. They would get completely ignored, in fact, if they didn't put a big screen TV with an XBox out in the walk area in front of the store, to attract gamers to play on it a little bit.

I bought a Surface Pro 3, and I really like it. It's a great little machine for doing development on the go. It's incredibly portable and decently fast, but too hard to use in some cases; it's actually less convenient than using a full laptop. The biggest problem is that it's impossible to use the stupid little typecover on your lap!

I might sell it and buy a Yoga 3. :)

Lenovo has a much better platform to stand on than the Surface Pro 3. Literally.
