My MacBookPro's screen should have touch and I should be able to simply remove the screen from the unit to have it become my tablet.

I would love to see the MacBook Air go away and have the 12" take its place. It's a full power Laptop when it is docked and an iOS tablet when it is undocked.
I guess the change in user experience on the same device might throw people. I'm sure Apple will find a way to make that experience elegant and seamless.

I have to say having used a Surface I really do like it but I just don't think I could give up the convenience of iMessage on my Mac alongside my iPhone.

What people seems to be overlooking is they are comparing a touchscreen tablet with examples of touchscreen capability to a freaking laptop. They should compare a touchscreen tablet to a touchscreen tablet if they want to compare something to a laptop it should be another laptop.

Every time I've been to Tyson's, the Microsoft store barely has anyone in it. They would get completely ignored, in fact, if they didn't put a big screen TV with an XBox out in the walk area in front of the store, to attract gamers to play on it a little bit.

Same setup here. Doesn't seem to help them. Astonishingly, the high school kids who play Xbox in the middle of a mall don't usually buy anything.

Funny part is the Microsoft store is roughly double the size of the Apple Store with 1/10 the foot traffic, and that's being generous. So they're paying double the rent and making nothing. Well done!

The surface is a good laptop - especially for work on the road.

But it can't do anything the macbook air can't....and let's face it....microsoft is not as "hip" as Apple. If it would cost half of the macbook air it would be an amazing alternative. But it's too late to the party and will disappear soon.

As a tablet it's totally unusable. Way too heavy. Absolutely no apps.

How many people here have used a Surface Pro 3?

Neat systems, right?

Have you made note of their display resolution? It's very high, which should be a good thing.

Except that it's not.

Why? Because of Windows. Windows does a terrible job with high resolutions. It doesn't scale anything correctly. Fonts always look "off". "Legacy" dialog boxes appear super tiny. It's just a mess.

Basically, Windows holds the Surface Pro 3 back. They'd be better if they had OS X, or even Linux installed on them.

The work-around is to reduce the resolution they run at. This makes things readable, but stuff is no longer crystal-clear, since it will be running at a non-native resolution.

I don't think I want a touch screen on my MacBook Pro, maybe I'm wrong. Soon the iPad will be just as power, in 2-3 more generations it will be able to run full versions of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro X.

As soon as somebody, ANYBODY, delivers a product that does this seamlessly, I'll buy one. Microsoft tried by making an OS that is supposed to work on a tablet and a desktop. It doesn't. But this is a device that someone needs to make.

Needs cheaper prices, LTE, more efficient processors (for battery runtime) and better lapability with the type cover. Its next iterations could really kill the laptop if they do it right. The 3rd gen was a massive improvement, gotta say it.

P. S. Also needs more bearable ads.

My favorite part of the commercial is when they say it has "a USB"…um so does the LAPTOP they are comparing it to! Oh and the ad should say it costs more than a rMBP….the 512GB/i7 version is on sale for $1849. The 13" rMBP with 512GB is $1799. Nice idea…but I'll wait for the Apple version that will get it all "right".

Right? "Wow, I wish MY laptop held a relative angle between the keyboard and the monitor!" Like that hasn't been a feature of every laptop since the dawn of laptops. The kickstand is actually a step backward, really. Though I'll give them props for pushing something like that as if it's an upgrade...

Depends on what you need the kickstand to do. You're right that as a replacement for a traditional laptop hinge, it's not comparable. But quite honestly, at least in my use I can probably count the number of times I've needed to use my laptop on my actual lap on both hands (maybe just one). You have to remember that the stand also serves a purpose when the unit is in tablet mode too. It's actually quite a useful feature.

LOL what a joke.

I have a friend that works at a very large electronic store, umm lets just say they fry things, anyway the most returned item is the Surface Pro 3! LOL

Why are they returned?

Most of the Surface Pros are broken out of the box and the rest are returned, because they suck. Literally, customers do not like the product. Regardless of wether the customers are Win or Mac people, most of the Surface Pros are returned.

Also, employees would rather sell a different product.

Yes, the anecdotal evidence from your "friend" seems legit.

The average punter that would actually consider buying a Surface is doing spreadsheets, and probably Word. They're not going to care.

Yeah, I must have imagined doing some 3d work in zBrush and Maya just the other day. Oh, and the entire Adobe suite too.

What amuses me is that they are comparing it to a laptop. Have they actually tried to use the thing on their laps? Thats the reason they need that precious 'kick stand' in the first place. Its a tablet with a cover that has a built in 'keyboard'. I suppose the idiots sucked in will fall for this, and the 'usb'.

Hey dude what's that? Is that a kickstand?

In the commercial...I don't get why he's so fascinated with the kick stand out of everything.

That and the USB line are the best. They aren't even TRYING to sell it. And the pen line? I wish that one example (MS or Samsung) would show a compelling reason for me to want a pen. Other than circling a picture. which isn't compelling at all.

I will need a new laptop in early 2015 and I'm really tempted by the Surface Pro line. I have been waiting to see if Apple will release the Macbook Air with retina display, but if it's going to be released in October I cannot wait that long. I've always used Windows and am hoping to switch over to a Mac, but I'll still need to install Windows on it. The Surface Pro really looks good but I'm worried about how functional the typecover would be.

What is wrong with the MacBook Pro Retina? And remember, the Surface Pro can not function on a lap...

Can I use the keyboard on my lap?

...Oh. Well, come back when you've mastered that feature and we'll talk.

And if you could bring your high-end prices down to within a hundred bucks of an equivalent Air, that would be a big plus as well.

Microsoft, stop trying to make "fetch" happen, it's not gonna happen!

Can I make it a hackintosh and run OS X? Otherwise, not very useful to me.. I run Windows in a VM where it belongs!

One of my other gripes, you can run this software on the Mac but you can't run Apples software on the PC. Very important argument on the iOS vs Android, as you get all of the Google Apps (Chrome, Google Now, Maps, Gmail, OK Google...) but you can't get any of the Apple apps on Andorra such as the snappy Safari and such ;)

This is my issue also. My MBA runs Win7/OSX/Linux, all legal. If I had a SP I couldn't run OSX. I realize this limitation is because Apple is an Ass, but their asshatery works unfortunately. Maybe Microsoft needs to deny permission to run Windows on Apple hardware to make them stop?

So they want people to switch from an elegant, brushed aluminium laptop which sports a thin unibody design to a product which looks like it requires assembly and comes in red.

Haha I love how it sound like Apple wrote the Mac side and the Windows side is always longer :D

So this is the innovative Surface?

Apple has over 20 stylus patents/patent applications. Add proper pen support and split screen multi-tasking to iPad and who cares about Surface.
