I appreciate that the Zune is a direct competitor - but why the hell is this on page one??

This is barely page two news on a site apparently dedicated to Apple rumours.

Because Apple & Mac news has gotten quite boring of lately. The lack of anything new in the iPod Touch for the second year has already set in. Apple finally put FM radio in the Nano, years after everyone else did. The Nano has more exciting changes that the iPod Touch.

MS kept Excel at version 1 for years because it had no real competition. Even now nearly 25 years they still have no real competition. That means that th Windows version is lacking & the Mac version becomes very lacking in new useful features. For this very reason it is very relevant to iPod Touch Users that Apple have some real competition. Without this competition the iPod Touch will go 3, 4, 5 or more years with only very minor changes. Add the fact that small & pretty is more important to Apple at the current time than useful usable features even if the size has to be a little bigger.

I've been a Mac User since 1984. Our first Windows computer was given to use several years ago. It is a 500 MHz Athalon Compac running Wndows 98, making it a 2000 vintage model. We keep it around to run AutoCad. My second Windows computer is my Intel Mac Pro, 1st gen. I own 4-5 iPods & no MS Zunes. But I still want Apple to have some competition so that when Apple finally has convinced me that they have done more than increased storage capacity that I can add my couple of year long awaited iPod Touch.

Apple needs better/more competition

I'm glad someone is trying to compete with the iPod touch. The OLED screen, "HD" radio and 720p output are all neat features. There's also apparently a big update coming in November for the 360 and Zune HD that will allow integration between the two.

It is a little ironic that the Apple TV can't do 720p playback at 30 FPS and the Zune HD can. Heh.

"H.264 video3; Baseline Profile + bframes, up to 10 Mbps peak video bit rate; 720 pixels x 480 pixels up to 30 frames per second (or 720 pixels x 576 pixels up to 25 frames per second);1280 pixels x 720 pixels up to 30 frames per second, up to level 3.1 and 14.0 Mbps peak video bitrate; Zune software will transcode HD WMV files above the stated capabilities at device sync
DVR-MS4; Zune software will transcode at time of sync"

The whole "We're not going to have an App Store competitor until Windows Mobile 7 comes out" is kind of weird. And the fact that the Zune HD's browser is based on Internet Explorer 6 (quite possibly the worst version ever of IE) is also a downer.

However, Zune HD looks to be a decent competitor if you want something other than iPod touch.

I agree with you. I hope that Microsoft continue to add more functionality so Apple can stop piece mealing their updates and really up the ante. Honestly, the last breakthrough was the iPhone. It seems like we are all waiting for the next big thing from Apple. They're only giving us stuff that we've been complaining about for the past two years instead of wow'ing us with something we didn't know we needed.

Looks like a nice device, but I doubt I'd ever buy one. Still, competition is good.

Competition is good when the other competitor isn't an entrenched monopoly known for peddling mediocre wares. Microsoft is not a healthy competitor and I really despise this argument that Microsoft competing with Apple is a good thing for all. No it isn't.

Microsoft needs to focus on 2 things... Windows and Office. Both are their bread and butter but they keep failing their shareholders by expanding into new markets and losing a ton of cash.

Had Palm not originally taken off, there never would've been WindowsCE.

Without the iPod, there would not be a Zune.

Without the iPod Touch, there would not be the ZuneHD.

I could go on an on...

Microsoft tries to destroy open standards every chance they get. That is not fair competition. Blu-ray was nearly undone by Microsoft propping up Toshiba's HD DVD merely in an effort to defeat the launch of the Playstation 3. Is that healthy competition? No.

What we are truly missing in MP3 player competition is a healthy Sony taking on Apple. I would love to see the market split between Apple and Sony but Sony has to overcome their ever persistent hurdle with software.

And I'm sure those developers appreciate you calling their work garbage.

Or they could use it as a reason to make better apps? Most iPhone/iPod apps are absolutely rubbish and taking up nothing but space, making the app store bloated and making it difficult to find the good apps.

Lets see some good, original games that don't plagiarise or aren't ports of successful DS/PSP games.

Sorry, one more question for the Zune HD browser. Does it automatically take you to the "mobile" version of a website like the iPhone/iPod Touch does if it's available? I think amazon.com is one that has a mobile site that looks different than the full site you see on the computer.

It goes directly to mobile site, then if you click on the "view full site" it opens up the whole site - like the iphone/touch

Apple loves your Zune Microsoft!!

As an iphone 3gs owner I am thrilled at Microsoft's new Zune release. I thought it would pose a threat and challenge the new itouch/iphone when in fact it hasnt. Not even close. What I find is another copying of Apple's intuitiveness just like the first iterations of Zune were ipod imitations(with FM radio ahem of course-a much sought after medium these days). So too now MS reduces its HDD size to the same as the itouch, brings out "apps" and a "touch" screen. How very imaginative. I guess mimicry is a subtle form of flattery as the saying goes.
I thought they would have some stunning tricks up their sleeves to one-up the itouch. Nope. I mean FM radio is really silly(silly on the nano as well I admit). When we have apps like Pandora or media streaming apps on the iphone/touch with good digital, commercial free quality going back to FM radio is meh, boring. But hey they can also project video onto a tv. WOW. Of course when I am at home I have many other better options, watching my bluray player, watching my HDTV with HD programming and HDDVR, or streaming media from my laptop on my 360 or ps3 or appletv. Most people dont buy pocket sized portable devices like an iphone, etc so they can project it on their tv but rather so they can watch it on the go. Most people who can afford these devices are a/v junkies already and have better options for their home viewing enjoyment. So it may appeal to 1.1% of the public, ahem. All in all I applaud the new Zune. It poses absolutely no threat at all and MS shows no creativity or ingenuity again. Instead MS indirectly flatters the iphone/touch with mimicry, although without anywhere near the same level of style and function. Keep bringing these things out Microsoft. We love it. I hear and read MS fanboys saying we fear it. Couldnt be farther from the truth. Keep up the great work MS. We applaud this release:D Enjoy your new toy MS.

Does anyone know if the Zune's web browser can play Flash? (EDIT: Nevermind...I guess it doesn't.)

Other than that, I'm going to wait until I can play with one because on the surface, I'm not really finding much to be excited about.

If it weren't such a hassle to use a Zune on Mac I'd consider getting one. (I don't want to have to boot into windows every time I want to upload something)

Plus my iPod Video is still chugging along and has the same storage as the larger capacity Touch. (Die already IPV!!)

F.A.S.T, iFighter, Flight Control, TapTap, Hero of Sparta - you can say the same thing about windows apps - it doesn't mean that there aren't good and really useful apps on the platform -to say that there's only 1000 good apps is really not true and just another talking point regurgitated.

It doesn't have Flash support. They said that it doesn't seem likely, but its being worked on.

I only have a Mac that does not have windows installed, nor do I have any displays that accept HDMI, or other digital video of that sort, nor do I listen to the radio so this has absolutely NO appeal to me.

I have an iPhone 3G and if I did not I would definitely have an iPod Touch and would not even consider this device.

Competition is good!

hopefully this will keep apple on their toes and the iPod Touch 4G will have a OLED screen.

I think it's beautiful and far superior to the iPod Touch which just looks big and clumsy in comparison to it.

Sadly that's as close as I'm going to get to it as I live in the UK! :(

Oh yeah, as for the article from Apple Insider/RD, I must admit to almost admiring Dilger's sheer ignorance and spin. I can't believe people still take him seriously.

I was under the impression these had come out months ago...
Well, good luck MS; Apple needs someone pushing them a little on the Touch.

I don't see this making much of a dent without a strong app store, though. I assume MS has done their market research and knows something I don't... well... I wouldn't bet on it, though.

Wow, I didn't think you would be able to see the difference between the Zune HD and iPod Touch/iPhone as the screen is concerned...

But the Zune actually makes the iPhone/Touch screen look dull and fuzzy! I it might just be the fact that it is a picture, but I friend of mine from school is picking his up later today so I will be able to compare it to my iPod Touch 2G.

I just wish HD radio wasn't proprietary. Hopefully it is eventually opened or superseded by an open standard.

HD Radio ISN'T proprietary. It's the next step in radio. While it's not truly HD it is the digital version of radio that has been around for years with Digital FM signals approaching CD Quality sound and AM signals sounding more like today's FM.

70k apps in the apps store. Of those 70k apps 69k of them are complete and utter garbage.

Completely subjective, but let's say for the sake of argument that you're right. That still puts Apple 1000 apps ahead of the competition.
