Why all this interest for a device that has less than 1% of market share???![]()
So market share of previous versions makes the Zune HD not worth being interested in?
I guess a device is only worth getting if everyone else has one?

HD Radio ISN'T proprietary. It's the next step in radio. While it's not truly HD it is the digital version of radio that has been around for years with Digital FM signals approaching CD Quality sound and AM signals sounding more like today's FM.
Wow, I didn't think you would be able to see the difference between the Zune HD and iPod Touch/iPhone as the screen is concerned...
But the Zune actually makes the iPhone/Touch screen look dull and fuzzy! I it might just be the fact that it is a picture, but I friend of mine from school is picking his up later today so I will be able to compare it to my iPod Touch 2G.
My iPhone looks nothing like that. It's a side-effect of being photographed. On my iPhone, the blacks are pure black, no lightness to it at all. I would guess the apparent difference comes from the fact that the iPhone/iPod Touch are off-center and the Zune HD is not. Regardless, you would have to photograph these under considerably more controlled manner to make such a comparative judgment--or use a color calibration device to get fully objective measurements of the blacks.
Also, the Zune pass is actually pretty cool. I'm surprised Apple has yet to offer something similar.
So market share of previous versions makes the Zune HD not worth being interested in?x2

It's always MS MS MS ... What's the benefit of having a gorgeous display without nothing inside?
Why does everyone point out t he lack of an app store as a problem?
The iPhone nor the iPod touch had an app store for over a year.
Wasn't a problem for apple and won't be for microsoft.
HD Radio ISN'T proprietary.
Competition is good when the other competitor isn't an entrenched monopoly known for peddling mediocre wares. Microsoft is not a healthy competitor and I really despise this argument that Microsoft competing with Apple is a good thing for all. No it isn't.
Microsoft needs to focus on 2 things... Windows and Office. Both are their bread and butter but they keep failing their shareholders by expanding into new markets and losing a ton of cash.
Had Palm not originally taken off, there never would've been WindowsCE.
Without the iPod, there would not be a Zune.
Without the iPod Touch, there would not be the ZuneHD.
I could go on an on...
Microsoft tries to destroy open standards every chance they get. That is not fair competition. Blu-ray was nearly undone by Microsoft propping up Toshiba's HD DVD merely in an effort to defeat the launch of the Playstation 3. Is that healthy competition? No.
What we are truly missing in MP3 player competition is a healthy Sony taking on Apple. I would love to see the market split between Apple and Sony but Sony has to overcome their ever persistent hurdle with software.
C'mon what you have to do with that device? Going to the moon? What?
So much nonsense in this thread, coming from the usual suspects. For one thing, the automatic forwarding to a mobile site is done by the website itself, not the device - if the forwarding isn't working, don't blame the company that made your device (provided they've set a unique user agent, which I'm sure Microsoft have), blame whoever is responsible for the website.
I can't believe everyone is complaining about it - Microsoft has released a portable media player which is far better than any of the iPod models. The most significant thing though is that you get DOUBLE the storage capacity on the entry level model for just $29 more. Even if you're not interested in the other features, this should really get your attention.
The other thing I'm curious about is why everyone is so desperate to have "apps" on their media player. Sure, there is the odd game which is fun to play, but without a permanent data connection it's pretty redundant. Everyone knows that if you want to play games on the go, you get a proper gaming device. Nothing comes close to playing a game with a set of buttons instead of some pretend ones on screen.
Radio is also a great feature to have. Whether it's FM, HD or DAB, it's great. I know plenty of people who still use FM radio and when Microsoft does get round to releasing this in the UK I can see people talking about it for this very reason.
I agree with you. I hope that Microsoft continue to add more functionality so Apple can stop piece mealing their updates and really up the ante. Honestly, the last breakthrough was the iPhone. It seems like we are all waiting for the next big thing from Apple. They're only giving us stuff that we've been complaining about for the past two years instead of wow'ing us with something we didn't know we needed.

Good point, but I don't think these kids who never lived through the QDOS era understand why MS cannot be used as an example of "fair competition".
With today's release, the Zune Pass allows you to stream music to a web browser. The Zune Pass is great.
Or considering how crummy and unreliable Word is to this day versus Word Perfect 5.1 from circa 1989. Gawd, I wish someone would open source Word Perfect so at the very least it could replace the OpenOffice word processor.
