from watching that i am interested, however did he imply that you will only be able to get drivers/Apps from the store? looks like they are going Apple way after all.

I'm still confused... What's so great about Windows for ARM? It's locked down. What's the difference between that and an iPad?

Could someone explain the intriguing differences/benefits of a Windows 8 for ARM tablet?

So there's this tablet out there that's got pretty much all the market-share. No one can touch it. Everyone is attacking it from different angles...cheaper!...smaller!...e-ink!...

But none of it seems to matter. That one tablet keeps dominating.

So Microsoft finally decides to fight fire with fire and come up with something that has the same strengths and weaknesses as the winner. They think maybe they can appeal to people by building something that they clearly already want.

...and your question is 'how is it different?'

Hopefully not very much at all!

This sounds like fail to me for two reasons:

1 - Microsoft still isn't building their own hardware. "Working closely" with manufacturers isn't enough. They need to actually design their products.

2 - Dual target for both WOA and Windows 8? This sounds like an invitation to get lots of crap on your app store. It'll go something like this:
"I have a great app idea for the touch interface of WOA!"
months later, great app is ready for sale.
"Hey! I can double revenue by also selling this on Windows 8! And with dual targets, it'll be easy!"
next day, app with a shoddily put together desktop interface is also ready for sale.

And of course it can go in reverse, too. Great ideas for desktop interfaces that suck on touch screens.

I'd actually prefer Windows to NOT build or design their own hardware/products.. I want to be able to have choices at least on one Platform.. Even though I use Mac primarily I do enjoy building custom PC's..

As much as I love Apple & Macs in many cases having the flexibility of choosing your own case, motherboard etc is important to a lot of the PC Users..

Agreed on the hardware for sure. MS should have taken that capital they have and invest in making their own hardware...not sure why they ignored this part...Apple has proven already that designing for specific hardware you make is the best way to control the user experience.

Make a Desktop, Laptop, Tablet and Phone....3 of each model and start to prosper again.

Well they could still offer their own machine and just say 'Hey, these machines are designed and optimized for the W8 user experience and we know everything works as it should on them.' while offering the software for other vendors to use and users to build their own desktops. Obviously it wouldn't apply to tablets, phones or laptops.

You're going to have to get over that. "Building a custom tablet" is just not something that's going to be a thing in the future.

Sure, you'll be able to keep building PCs for yourself, but it's going to be more like a hobby...like those guys that build model airplanes. That's cool and your friends will admire you, but none of them will ask you to build one for them.

Microsoft is getting closer, but they are still missing the boat on exactly what a tablet should do. They are trying to make it do way too much. In the finished product we will see an OS that can do a lot (in theory). But in application will present a number of issues that will take numerous patches just to make it usable. If they would strip it down and make a device that actually does what most people need it to do, and make it work with at least some semblance of stability, they might be able to compete with the iPad. I guess we will see what ends up shipping.

They are trying to get it. And if they would scale back and focus on making something work first, it might actually be a good thing for them. As it stands right now, they are trying to create a product that is a better version of their old tablet architecture. Essentially they are trying to shove an old idea inside of a new one.

Windows Phone and Tablet are not catching on-like the Zune....MS only have their legacy to run on-Microsoft is a dinosaur in the late Cretaceous period....the mammals are starting to appear and flourish and will take over soon...

In other words, MS still has no idea what to do in the new mobile world.

Let the kids in the company take over, they can see where technology and society is heading.

Ballmer has been a joke since day one and has NO vision other than greenbacks raining in front of him.

Hmmm... Now that the infamous ribbon interface has become a fixture of Windows Explorer in 8, I for one will be going nowhere near it.

I hate the ribbon!

I know, having a visible and immediately useful and browseable UI for the features applicable to the item selected. It just sucks and makes my day harder to go through.

if Apple plays it smart they will wait for Win8 to flood the market. Then they can finally begin to merge iOS and OS X and release those touch screen iMacs and ARM MBA's that have been rumored for years.

Then they will again have a superior product compared to the rest of the market.

this will come across as mean - but I AM just trying to be helpful...

Mircosoft should get someone to be in charge of public-facing wardrobes choices.

Looks like they're trying to drop the suit look, but they're not headed in the right direction yet...

"Windows is an antiquated technology"-WSJ Sept 2009

Hardware and software is only as useful as what can be done with it. If the vast majority of the world still uses PCs (as in desktops and laptops) to do the vast majority of their work, then it's not antiquated. It's contemporary.

It's still windows, and windows means virus.

Windows is windows no matter what version. In that world you have to buy all kinds of extras especially virus protectors and worry a lot about maintaining windows OS situations. I don't want to waste my time trying to figure out why this and why that. Or why it slowing down over few months. I'm very much into productivity and all my life with apple computing, I've only bought few apple laptops during my life time and gone through maybe 3 different laptops because I needed a faster processor every decade, not once have I had to deal with OS problems. I point, click and be creative.

Well, honestly, I have never bought any Virus protection what so ever for my Apple computing use. I've never worried about it. I mean hell I get email spams that are windows related and I just laugh at what that email is all about. Honestly I just let the rest of my friends know who are on PC but aren't very savvy about computers to be careful since they tend to open up just about any email that looks important. Watch out cause I KNOW, as soon as they open that email and it's attachment, BOOOM! They get infect. My mac at least simply says, can't run it or it'll be a window's .exe file type. I just delete it no problem. I've never seen a Mac technician for my laptop nor had to take it in. Anyway, my point is, I'm quite happy how apple has made my life productive and quite comfortable.

I just seen so many Window based users struggle with their computers and I can't help them because I don't know much about computers. And I tried my sorry attempt to help them, and I say, well try restarting. Half the time it resolves it. Then I'd say, well, if you can't handle pc's then get a mac when I see them swearing their head off and about to throw their PC out their window. Gosh I've seen more people pound their mouse or keyboard or punch their monitor of their PC I wonder if the creators of window Operating systems knew to do that and allow tech services make more money on broken computers. I've never had to hit my mac. Now, for those, who are die hard PC users, they know what they are doing. Half the time they need to figure out what's up and delete this and close that or whatever but more power to them. And half the time they are productive. I'm impressed that for those few PC users they know the in's and out that they should work for Microsoft tech support.

Mac user's I've interacted seem much more relaxed and just worrying about being more creative. It's great.

I doubt Win8 will have virus issues.. they will have a dedicated app store like Apple and M$ claims to be working closer with hardware vendors for a better user experience.

It seems, at least at the moment, that they get it. Then I see that horrible Ribbon UI and I can't help but have my doubts as well.

What does Microsoft have against a decent microphone in their videos?? Just like the original Windows 8 intro video, the sound is just TERRIBLE. and NOISY.
