from watching that i am interested, however did he imply that you will only be able to get drivers/Apps from the store? looks like they are going Apple way after all.
I'm still confused... What's so great about Windows for ARM? It's locked down. What's the difference between that and an iPad?
Could someone explain the intriguing differences/benefits of a Windows 8 for ARM tablet?
This sounds like fail to me for two reasons:
1 - Microsoft still isn't building their own hardware. "Working closely" with manufacturers isn't enough. They need to actually design their products.
2 - Dual target for both WOA and Windows 8? This sounds like an invitation to get lots of crap on your app store. It'll go something like this:
"I have a great app idea for the touch interface of WOA!"
months later, great app is ready for sale.
"Hey! I can double revenue by also selling this on Windows 8! And with dual targets, it'll be easy!"
next day, app with a shoddily put together desktop interface is also ready for sale.
And of course it can go in reverse, too. Great ideas for desktop interfaces that suck on touch screens.

I'd actually prefer Windows to NOT build or design their own hardware/products.. I want to be able to have choices at least on one Platform.. Even though I use Mac primarily I do enjoy building custom PC's..
As much as I love Apple & Macs in many cases having the flexibility of choosing your own case, motherboard etc is important to a lot of the PC Users..

Intel has got to be quaking in their dies.

new, no-compromise PCs
Sounds like a compromise though, doesn't it?support a limited "desktop mode" that will more closely resemble traditional Windows
but they are still missing the boat on exactly what a tablet should do
Hmmm... Now that the infamous ribbon interface has become a fixture of Windows Explorer in 8, I for one will be going nowhere near it.
I hate the ribbon!
microsoft is getting closer, but they are still missing the boat on exactly what a tablet should do. They are trying to make it do way too much. In the finished product we will see an os that can do a lot (in theory). But in application will present a number of issues that will take numerous patches just to make it usable. If they would strip it down and make a device that actually does what most people need it to do, and make it work with at least some semblance of stability, they might be able to compete with the ipad. I guess we will see what ends up shipping.
Windows Phone and Tablet are not catching on-like the Zune....MS only have their legacy to run on-Microsoft is a dinosaur in the late Cretaceous period....the mammals are starting to appear and flourish and will take over soon...
"Windows is an antiquated technology"-WSJ Sept 2009
What's Bruce Willis doing in the photo? He's lost a lot of weight.
Windows is windows no matter what version. In that world you have to buy all kinds of extras especially virus protectors and worry a lot about maintaining windows OS situations. I don't want to waste my time trying to figure out why this and why that. Or why it slowing down over few months. I'm very much into productivity and all my life with apple computing, I've only bought few apple laptops during my life time and gone through maybe 3 different laptops because I needed a faster processor every decade, not once have I had to deal with OS problems. I point, click and be creative.
Well, honestly, I have never bought any Virus protection what so ever for my Apple computing use. I've never worried about it. I mean hell I get email spams that are windows related and I just laugh at what that email is all about. Honestly I just let the rest of my friends know who are on PC but aren't very savvy about computers to be careful since they tend to open up just about any email that looks important. Watch out cause I KNOW, as soon as they open that email and it's attachment, BOOOM! They get infect. My mac at least simply says, can't run it or it'll be a window's .exe file type. I just delete it no problem. I've never seen a Mac technician for my laptop nor had to take it in. Anyway, my point is, I'm quite happy how apple has made my life productive and quite comfortable.
I just seen so many Window based users struggle with their computers and I can't help them because I don't know much about computers. And I tried my sorry attempt to help them, and I say, well try restarting. Half the time it resolves it. Then I'd say, well, if you can't handle pc's then get a mac when I see them swearing their head off and about to throw their PC out their window. Gosh I've seen more people pound their mouse or keyboard or punch their monitor of their PC I wonder if the creators of window Operating systems knew to do that and allow tech services make more money on broken computers. I've never had to hit my mac. Now, for those, who are die hard PC users, they know what they are doing. Half the time they need to figure out what's up and delete this and close that or whatever but more power to them. And half the time they are productive. I'm impressed that for those few PC users they know the in's and out that they should work for Microsoft tech support.
Mac user's I've interacted seem much more relaxed and just worrying about being more creative. It's great.
