What about putting it towards the new Surface iMac? That thing actually looks legit. I think Apple would be more worried, but they're clearly trying to wind down the Mac. Although it doesn't seem like they care about the iPad Pro either. Maybe sunset both and come out with something completely new in a few years?

Now you're just trolling. "Clearly trying to wind down the Mac - doesn't seem like they care about the iPad Pro either."? What rock have you been under?

The iPad Pro was released November 2015 - only just a year ago. The 9.7" was released just this year in March with rumors of a Mini version for release in Q2 2017. "Sunset both"?

Other than Facebook and coding which a $200 ChromeOS laptop can do, what do people do on a MacBook? Professional software like CATIA, Solidworks, OrCAD, ANSYS, etc. are only available on Windows and maybe Linux. Even when you take a break from professional work with some professional gaming all the hottest new titles like BF1 are only available on Windows and not MacOS.

considering the ridiculous prices they are asking for Surface machines - they need to! I may be tempted to give up one of my MBPs, but I wouldn't know which one - I think I would keep the 2012 because it's upgradeable and has a CD Drive - which, yes I still use. I have a 1TB SSD and 16 Gigs of ram in it and it's just as fast as my 2015 - with the same specs. Only reason I don't use it more is the poor battery life on it.

I still have my 2012 15" MBP as well and upgraded it just like you did; 16gb RAM, 1TB HDD, 120GB SSD. I don't use it much since I have a work laptop and a powerhouse hackintosh at home... but I really dont want to part with it.

Wait! Did MS buy T-mobile? Is John now driving MS marketing? This is hilarious.

I mean really, the cost of converting from one ecosystem to another is so significant that this cannot truly sway a lot of folks (only those that were barely invested). Still funny that MS is trying to pull an "un-carrier" move.

The surface studio that many are praising is using year old processor as well. So should we chalk it up as outdated and overpriced as well?

And after spending time with the entry level Surface Studio in the Microsoft Store, it's laggy as hell.

Kinda disappointing TBH, I was hoping that it would be a real threat to Wacom's dominance in the art tablet market.

Maybe next gen.

I was totally going to do this, but my macbook would only get me a 100 trade in and most stores already sell the surface 4 for less then 799 so buying from microsoft would actually be more money even with the trade in!

Good for Microsoft. With the amount of negativity and thread responses of "Time to look and go with a Windows based pc" talk around here, they should do a killing! I mean, I would think all of those pissed at Apple, especially those on this site, would be jumping on this. Right?

Well this post isn't going to last long with name calling. Against the rules.

Have you seen the prices on the new Macbooks, especially overseas? They still ship with the same memory capacities as the 2012 model. And the iMac, Mac Pro, and Mac Mini are way overdue for an update. How do you wind down a product line this old without pissing off everyone? You jack up the price and stretch out updates until enough people start flocking to something else. Then in 2020 Tim gives an interview saying "Well, this was a really tough decision, but Macs just haven't been selling as well the past few years. They had a great run, but now it's time to push forward with iOS (or insert X here) as our platform of the future." I'm sincerely not trolling, and I'm often criticized as an Apple apologist or fanboy.

As for the iPad, sales have been declining. They raised the prices on them as well, and now we're going into the holiday quarter with no new iPad update. Sure there was the 9.7" one last spring, but that model wasn't really much of a leap beyond the iPad Air 2. Declining sales + no update + an iPhone 7 that's just as fast as a "Pro" machine doesn't bode well for the device going forward. We'll see. I'd definitely say it has more of a chance long-term than the Mac, which is why I think there may be something new coming down the pipe in a few years that might replace both. I follow this stuff closely, but this is just my speculation based on observation. Again, no need to name call. If you spend any amount of time around these forums, you would know that I put a lot of thought into this crap and am not a "troll."

I apologize for the name calling, but honestly if you really followed this "stuff" as closely as you say then you wouldn't be spouting out misinformation like you did in the first place.

I hardly think Apple is, "winding down" anything. People need to chill a bit, just because other new products weren't announced yet doesn't mean they're not coming. Schiller even said that Apple doesn't operate on a calendar. They'll announce when they feel they're ready and I for one am thankful they're not quick to just rush a product out to market because everyone else thinks they should. While the Surface Studio looks like a tempting alternative right now, I've decided to wait and see once the reviews are in after they've been in the hands of everyday consumers.

You can thank Brexit and inflation for the current prices in Britain.

Yeah I said I was waiting to see what the new iMac offered. It's the competition to the Surface Studio. Trust me, I'll never rush into Windows, lol, it's a last resort but one that is looking a lot better than it used to.

Hopefully, Apple will take note of the competition and stop effing around. Yeah, I know Windows is garbage, but people apparently use it anyway if it comes on a nice laptop.

Agreed. That's exactly what I thought right after they announced the new pricing.

I mean, I love Apple. They make incredible products, and I don't think they're losing their vision. It's different from Steve's vision, but that's a good thing. At least we know they're not trying to 'copy' him. It's just that they've been into money too much lately. Even worse, in countries like the Netherlands Apple products cost even more. The iPhone 7 I bought was €879 which converts to over $950. Same thing with the new MacBook Pro: entry model with Touch Bar and Touch ID costs €1999 which is around $2173 (compared to $1799). That's crazy! I know these bad regulations done by the EU aren't Apple's fault, but still... many companies actually try to keep pricing more consistent across all countries. Yet, Apple forces us Europeans to pay even more. Not just here, but in countries outside the EU as well. And we're not even getting every feature that Apple has, like Apple Pay, QuickType, that new TV app, TV Shows, Transit for Maps, News app etc.

That's so disappointing. But because I love their software efforts, I keep using it. Even I, as a network engineering student have to admit that Windows is bad. :p

I believe €386 of that €1999 is tax and legal fees. Here in US the taxes are added at check out along with shipping fees so comparing the listed price is not comparing apples to apples (pun intended).
It's still more expensive, but not quite as bad as it seems.

When was the last time you used it? You don't need to "patch and reboot" it anymore. As for viruses, keep out of porn sites and you'll have none of these either.

Funny.... kinda like STDs. If you don't want one, either stay away from •••••, or use protection.

Viruses are just computer STDs. Always enjoy hanging out at the computer shops and listening to the "innocent" people who claim they were just using their computer and a ransom ware notice came up for no reason. They were just doing nothing... lol.

You'd think these would be men. But you'd be wrong. Yep... girls like porn as much or more than guys. Just go browse the stores and see which ones come in more frequently.

I have a lot of female friends. Trust me... they're just as bad as the guys.

I've got a great condition 2006 MacBook Pro just collecting dust and Microsoft will give me more than I could sell it for.
:(
Too bad I don't want a Surface.
You could use the offer then to get a surface, then sell the surface for more money than you spent to get it. If that is more when you add the money that MS gives you to take your macbook pro,= profit.

There is a problem: obnoxious anti-intuitive Windows inside. No, thanks. Not even for free. Nothing like the Mac. Not even iOS.

Apple vs MS......MS won that round hands down,

Sad but true, and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better. I believe that TC has now run out of SJ's coat-tails. I've been with Apple a long, long time and I remained loyal because I love the hardware combined with the operating system. I still love the iPhone and my recent acquisition of an Apple Watch, but on the computing side, I'm more intrigued by the Surface Studio. Suddenly, Windows 10 doesn't look so shabby.

HAHAHAHA, why on earth would I trade in my beautiful MacBook Pro for a notebook from Microsoft? I mean, those things run Windows. I switched from Windows to macOS just because of that!

What about using Hackintosh on the Surface? The best of the two worlds...

Hi guys: does anyone know if the trade in applies for surface studio? Not really into their surface tablets. Thanks!
