it does install to a machine that has run monolingual and xslimmer on the previous version. at least it did for me.

Only speed updates to Word and Excel? What about Entourage? - It has got to be the slowest mail reader ever - on any platform, but I need to use it to access my company's Exchange server.

I think Outlook 2007 has it beat in terms of being slow. I hate that godawful application. On the bright side, the Technical Preview of Outlook 2010 blows away the 2007 version. I'm loving Outlook 2010 so far.

It would be nice for apple to spend some of that revenue earned and build there own real office suite, otherwise support Microsoft in the development of theirs. Its really said that all apple has to offer is iWork, so for most basic users is fine, but is an insult to real business requirements. I guess software for the most part is still better on windows.

Because unfortunately we're only allowed to download one platform.

I see. In this case I say it depends on your computing habits.
Which OS are you using primarily? For stuff like email, surfing, etc.

I would install this office version, because otherwise your workflow is seriously broken if you have to switch the OS, just to change something in a document that you received via email.

However, if you need VBA support you are stuck with Windows...

OH WOW! This is like the best Microsoft update, EVER. It's so friggin fast now holy crap. It's faster than iWork 08 lol. Time to set Office 08 to default again :D

GJ MS!!

Wow. Opens up really fast. AND spaces seem to work. At least with word. Move it from one space to another, and the formatting thing comes with.

2 second launch and load for me with a .docx file.

Running on a UMBP 13' 2.54 Ghz 4 GB of RAM. Snow Leopard 10A411

Does it finally work with Spaces? Boggles the mind that 2004 worked fine with Spaces, but 2008 is all sorts of broken.

Strictly when necessary, I use Office 2004 on my Intel Mac...I see absolutely NO reason to upgrade to 2008, especially considering that its performance seems to actually SUFFER on newer machines...only MS could do that, of course.

Just use apple's core business office suite instead...oh wait..

hmm, seems there is some disagreement...

Just a heads up. If you are using a serial number that isn't necessarily "legit", this update will break your MS Office.
I recommend turning Little Snitch on.

So for those of us used to using the Office 2007 suite ... can someone explain why M$ decided NOT to put in a similar UI (e.g. Ribbon) for the mainstay apps on Office 2008 for Mac?

After my daughter took a Keynote Boot Camp at the Apple Store last week, I bought iWork.
After checking it out, I've now removed all MS shortcuts from my dock and associated .doc and .xls to Pages and Numbers. I don't accept Office docs with macros in them so everything translates just fine.
I kept Office installed in case of emergency, but if I'm lucky I'll never have to look at those god-awful apps again.

Oh common, I found the exact oposite - that I needed Office, because iWork could not deliver on the promise.

iWork is far from perfect and so is almost every software-tool. If it seems perfect now - be sure there will be the next version that breaks it ;)

Hmm, does this make the difference between the Mac and PC versions any larger or smaller do you think? I can get either version for free through my college... and I don't know which to download... Office 2008 for Mac or the PC version and run it through Boot Camp. Thoughts?

There is no reason to use Boot Camp for MS Office. You can run the PC versin of Office in VMwware's "Fusion". PC Office can run in it's own window write on the Mac OS X desktop.
