You said you do not use Office very much. Do you use anything else instead, such as iWork or LibreOffice? Or you do not have need of using it more than you actually use Office 2008?

No use for anything else really. Unfortunately though I may be forced into an upgrade because of this.

but here we are quickly approaching the end of the year without even a rumor of a beta for the application suite :(

There's been many rumors of a beta.

Did they release a beta last round?

Last time they announced Office 2011 waaayyyy before release. Beta was private, but people know it was coming. This time they haven't publicly announced it.

A while ago, there was a guy on reddit claiming he had access to a beta. Of course he could be ************.

http://www.reddit.com/r/osx/comments/2i2xfi/is_office_for_mac_dead/ckz7fyk

He says "New outlook is a vast improvement on 2011." so looks like he is ********ting ;)

No screenshots or any piece of hard evidence, however.

that would break the NDA ;)

But it is a reasonable price to pay if the outcome will be for Office for Mac to become as good as Office for Windows. I am really looking forward to that.

I would temper your expectations.

I have not seen rumors of a beta in the press. I have seen some people posting posts on threads in this forum, but nothing beyond that. Have you seen anything?

Yes. And the beta version, although private, leaked and become largely available (unofficially) to anyone that wanted to download and test it.

I know! But people always break the NDA and post anonymous pictures of the beta version on the web! Are people choosing to respect the terms of the NDA just this time?

I would temper your expectations.

Cross your fingers!

I've not seen or heard of any. Not that I'm a beacon of information, but in my searches I've not come up with anything. Admittedly, since moving onto Office 2013 (running windows), I've largely given up on Mac Office, i.e., I've stopped looking.

I don't need to see rumors ;)

Don't know why nothing has leaked, there's enough people using it. Maybe people don't care enough to leak it?

Here:

"He said that Microsoft is already talking to large customers about the new Mac package behind closed doors."

Not sure if a statement from a Microsoft staff member is more fact that rumor.

"According to Hübschen, there should be more news in the second quarter of this year. "

Since that didn't happen it is safe to say that anything he said about the future of Office for Mac is less reliable than rumor.

Still no news? Yosemite really shows how dated Office 2011 is. It was released at the same time as Lion (!!!).

Unbearably slow on opening even the smallest files on a fully specced Mac.

Not to mention that the interface is basically feeling like an early concept of Office 2007.

Yes, it does. It's almost four years old. Nearly the same age as the current MacBook Air design...

I can only hope that indeed Microsoft is moving to the normal way of cross-platform software, meaning exactly the same software for different platforms. LibreOffice is the same between all platforms, so is many software. Weird that a giant company like MS doesn't manage to do that anno 2014.

They haven't done it so far.

I was hoping that when Yosemite delivered, that MS would have taken the opportunity to release the long overdue MAC Office upgrade.

"Microsoft is already talking to large customers about the new Mac package behind closed doors." - fact

"should be more news in the second quarter of this year. " - guess. Obviously he got this wrong, unless he was talking about 2015 ;)

I can't see Next Office for Mac being released before Q2 2015. Obviously, MS could announce before that, but don't expect a release before then.

Why do you expect Microsoft to release it only on or after Q2 2015?

Unless they surprise me, I expect them to announce the product several months before release. That gives them time to have final testing and private beta (unless that's been going on now and is just a really well kept secret). I don't see them doing anything in the first quarter to detract from their new Windows offerings.

I still have hope that they will announce it in November and it be released in January. I really don't think they'll announce it in December. If they miss that deadline I expect it to be March of 2015 before we hear anything with a subsequent release in June-ish?

All wild speculation and I may be hilariously wrong. I don't see what the big holdup is unless they are using all their resources for the new windows and a Metro style Office for Windows.

I hope they release it this year, but my hope is fading. I think they did not allocate people on the development of the next Windows, but on the development of the iPad version of Office (the team is the same that made Office for Mac), so the Mac Office was delayed. Or perhaps they are just taking the time to deliver a good Mac Office version this time.

Just a guess. It's nowhere near ready yet.

You seem to know a lot about it, but refuse to reveal anything. You are either bluffing or strictly respecting the NDA with Microsoft. Why isn't it nowhere near ready yet and how do you get this information?

Haven't we been discussing the private beta over the last couple of pages? ;)

I use it everyday, and it's still very much a beta. MS are adding new features/changes each beta build. They are listening to feedback, but I think people should temper their expectations about 1:1 feature parity with Windows Office.
They could announce it tomorrow for all I know, but I wouldn't expect it to be released before March/April.

Obviously, you've no reason to believe me, but I've been saying the same thing in this thread for months.

Thanks.

Although I have no reason to believe you, you somehow seem credible enough as the information you have been provided is consistent.

I do not expect 1:1 parity between the Windows and Mac versions. However, I expect it to at least keep all the features of Office 2011 and perhaps add a few more, making they both more similar. I also expect it to bring a better interface and to be more stable than Office 2011.

When was the last beta out? Can you say that?

Thanks.

They've been sticking to a new beta once a month. Each beta fixes some things, adds some features.

I think you'll be happy with it then. It's pretty much what you've described. Looks very close to Outlook 2013.

That is good. Does it look and feel similar or even better than Office 2013? And what about the features compared to Office 2013?

Thanks for the feedback!

I wouldn't ask him too many questions, he/she isn't supposed to talk about it and they haven't really come out and said anything specific until now and they may be uncomfortable doing so. I looked over his comments and he is indeed consistent so I believe they are telling truth (they have no real advantage to deceive us unless they just enjoy it).

Admittedly, I thought it would come out this year, but now I think we are looking at March-June timeframe (though they may still announce it, just with no release date) which I guess does make sense. I initially thought they wouldn't want to take away from their windows announcements, but really, a Mac announcement will barely be on their radar so I could see them announcing them all at the same time. Also, from the beginning I predicted a new UI blend between OneNote for Mac and Office 2013. I expect fluid performance and feature enhancements (with full Retina support), but no parity between Windows and Mac. ButteryScrolling's comments, if true, confirm that. I think it will be a solid update, but mission critical material should probably still be done in Office Windows. But I do appreciate ButteryScrolling's feedback.

The main things I want are a dependable Office viewer and a more fluid Excel. I assume Excel (while not Window's powerful) will be a decent improvement over what we have now. But I agree with BS that we need to temper our expectations.

Yes, you are right. Perhaps I should just stop bothering him/her.

I thought it would come out this year as well. Unfortunately there will be another 6 months without a new release.

It's good to hear rumors there really is new Office development for Mac. I need the good equation editor and drawing canvas in both Word and Powerpoint for work. But Office 2011 for Mac has the equation editor in Word but not Powerpoint, and the drawing canvas in Powerpoint not Word. The moment Microsoft puts those two pieces in place, I'm buying Office 365 and will be happy at last.

Right now, I have to run Windows in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook so I can use Office 2010. This not only costs for Fusion updates, but takes up almost half my SSD. I will be very happy to ditch fusion on my MacBook (will keep it at home on my Mini), update my Office installations to the latest versions, and will also be able to use the mobile Office for little things on my iPad. Win-win-win!

Please, Microsoft, take my money!
