Here is a news about Outlook for mac 16 beta, maybe office will come with it.

Thanks! Great piece of news. Finally someone leaked some pictures. And the pics look really legitimate. It seems like the next Office is really on the way.

I cannot understand a word on what the news are saying. I did a Google News search and all the information is available in Chinese only. I guess English-speaking websites will begin talking about it very soon, but it's still first-hand news, very fresh indeed.

If that is legitimate, it still isn't the clean look I was hoping for.

Why not? What else did you expect? I think these visuals look very similar to the interface of OneNote for Mac, don't they? The look is much cleaner than the one in Office 2011. You were not expecting to get rid of the ribbon, were you?

Looks much cleaner than Office 2011, and looks more OSX'ish as well. I'm optimistic that this version will have less bugs than 2011 and play better with OSX.

I can't wait to try out Excel to see if it has improved performance compared to 2011.

Very nice! I actually find Office 2011 for Mac to be quite good, pretty much on par with what I'm used to on the PC side in terms of reliability and usefulness. I'm really looking forward to the next release!

No, I don't mind the ribbon. It's more of the icons than the layout. Hopefully they just haven't updated the graphics becuase they look alot like the Office 2011 ones to me.

It is pretty much a guarantee that if Microsoft does the much needed refresh of Office for Mac, it will be subscription based.

Evidence? Link?

I have their 4 year University subscription so I'm indifferent, but I know many on here who will get really mad really quick.

Well, essentially, it already is. I use the Office 365 version so I can have access to the awesome 1TB of OneDrive storage and iPad counterparts. Yes, it downloads Office 2011 for Mac when you activate it, but essentially, it's by subscription and should be updated the moment the new version comes out.

There isn't any "smoking gun" if that's what you're looking for, but recent history shows that is the trajectory that Microsoft is taking with Office.

Office for iPad is by subscription only. It is not a stretch to think that they'll extend that "sub only" to OSX. After all, where are people going to go if they need Office? If it looks and works as well as the iPad version does that could be enough to get over the resistance to subscriptions. It's a manageable risk to do that to OSX users.

I think it sounds plausible, but I was wondering if they had any hard evidence. The Mac community is small enough, and Office is big enough, where they could pull it off, but I'm not sure they're at that point yet.

I'll probably be proven wrong.

Look at some recently unveiled software from the big software companies, Microsoft and Adobe. Example: Microsoft Office for iOS, Adobe creative cloud. Both of these are subscription based software.
Increasingly we are seeing more and more of this. I don't think this trend is going to go away. A subscription based software gives the developer more control and bigger profit.
I really hope I am wrong, but I have a feeling this is how it is going to be going forward.

I noticed yesterday that the Download only version of Office Mac 2011 is now listed as unavailable on Amazon.

Yes, but you can still buy Office on the non-subscription model. Give Mac users only the subscription version would infuriate them.

MacRumors finally posted the news. And probably because the news were first posted on The Verge (and perhaps other sites as well) and only then they noticed that the screenshots had leaked.

Interesting. But I guess the launch is not that imminent.

Yes, it is. Increasingly. But I don't think Microsoft will adopt this model for the Windows and OS X releases just yet.

Exactly. If it's subscription only for Mac, I'll be pissed. I use HUP, so I get full Office for £8.95 as a one off fee. I DO NOT want to pay £7 monthly for it. Don't care about onedrive, as its not for me. Leave subscription as adoption for those that want it. Keep outright purchase for the rest.

Yes. I do have the subscription version, but that's just me.

According to MacRumors, this version of Office that leaked is version 16, which should be on par with version 16 for Windows. That would mean that no version 15 of Office for Mac will ever be released. It probably also means that the Mac version will not be released before the next Windows version, which may be launched in Q2 2015. I don't know where MacRumors got this information from, however. Probably from the title of the thread in this Chinese website, and I don't know if it means much.

I've no idea where they got "Outlook for Mac 16". It may be branded as Outlook 2016 in the future, but there's nothing in the software to confirm that as of now. The version number is 15.

Take a look at One Note on the Mac App Store if you need some proof.

Yes. I do have OneNote for Mac and it is version 15.

I didn't know about the next Office, though. This leaked Outlook version could well be version 16. However, it seems like it is version 15 indeed. Thank you for the confirmation. It seems like that Office for Mac may launch before the next Office for Windows then.

While it is fun to guess when MS will get around to shipping a new Office for OSX, I'm at the point that I don't believe any dates being posted. MS themselves have provided so many different timeframes, and missed all of them.
