I have just read this:

And this:

They refer to this video:

While the guys says most about the Windows version of Office, this part called my attention:

He doesn't mention the Mac ... at first. Early in the talk, he mentions Microsoft's two platforms, Win32 and WinRT. He mentions Apple, but calls it iOS. This might be a troubling development, given the recent silence on a new Office version for Mac. It might not. But later on, he hints at where Microsoft is going: They are developing new iOS and OS X versions of Office in tandem, no doubt because of the underlying technical similarities of those platforms. This suggests that something truly great is in the works.

Sounds nice.

Office for Mac is definitely coming. A lead dev of the Mac (now Apex) group at MS confirmed it on Ars several times. But will not give dates.

Didn't read what he said, but going on planned Summit conference sessions. It's not coming this year, as I said many many months ago ....

I guess it will not released this year, since we are already approaching the end of October.

You mean Ars Technica forums? Did he say anything else?

Nope no time lines or anything, just said it's being worked on and the iOS team is the same as the old MacBU. I like the iOS apps so I'm excited for the direction I think they'll be going in.

Actually, I am disappointed as Office 2011 for Mac is celebrating its 4th anniversary and there are no signs of an update in the foreseeable future.

The news we have come from unofficial sources and they say that the next Office is still in the works, with private betas available but with features still being added, and nowhere near completion.

I hope at least Microsoft comes with something worth all this wait. I expect it to be a very beefed-up version of what we see in the iPad.

----------

Or maybe they'll pull of what Apple did last year with the Mac Pro, and release it December 31st. So they can say they kept their promise. :p

Well, at least Apple showed what was coming before the release. Microsoft did not even show us a picture yet.

not even beta yet. 1 more year to go I guess.

Why would it take more than one year? There are private betas being tested. Microsoft did not release a public beta, but there are private betas available (none leaked so far).

Waiting for Mac Microsoft Office 2014... or 2015?

Okay, I know a lot of you guys probably hate MS Office. So if you feel like that obviously you shouldn't be waiting for MS Office for Mac. But there are some of us that actually like the MS Office suite for Mac.

I was under the impression that the mac version will come out 1 year after the windows version. But it's almost 2015 now, and there is no word on the MS Office suite for Mac.

Is anyone else waiting for this? I just bought a new MBPr and I don't want to buy the MS Office 2011 version (which is 4 years old now), if they are going to update to 2014 version in the coming months.

I am waiting for a new Office for Mac to come out about a year after the Windows version. When I bought my retina MacBook Pro in June 2013, I was expecting the Mac Office to be released in late 2013 or the beginning of 2014. I was wrong and I am stuck with Office 2011.

I bought Office 365 and I am happy with the subscription model. It allows me to use both Office 2011 for Mac and Office 2013 for Windows. And I will get the next versions for both Windows and Mac as soon as they are released. Plus, I can use Office on the iPad. I think this is the best option.

If you opt to buy a non-subscription version, then you are at risk. The next Office can take 6 additional months to be released.

Add me to the list of waiters. Now even a single rumour is around about this thing.

Waiting very eagerly so my spreadsheets sync across my iPhone and Mac. Right now, I put my spreadsheets in iCloud drive but numbers on my iPhone converts it to a numbers file and creates a copy under numbers folder which is really annoying.

Can't wait for my spreadsheets to be simultaneously synced just like the contacts, notes app with iPhone/iCloud. It will make my job so much easier. (I work on production and am on foot most of the times)

I don't see how a new Office for Mac will be a solution for that?
In order to sync spreadsheets between your Mac and your iPhone, you need a version of Office on both devices that uses the same syncing solution. On the Mac you will be able to use iCloud as all Mac applications access the Mac file system and iCloud is part of it. But on the iOS side the Office app only syncs to OneDrive, and that's not about to change rightaway.

The solution you want is already here today: install the OneDrive app on your Mac, and sync your spreadsheets between Excel 2011 on Mac and Office Mobile on iPhone using OneDrive.

no rumor, no go.

I'm also waiting for Microsoft Office for Mac 2014. I currently have and use the 2011 version on my MacBook. Microsoft already confirmed months ago that the release is sometime this year. Perhaps in December? Even though that would be very close to 2015, it's still technically 2014.

They mentioned it like February or March of this year. I'd not hold out hope to see a new version in 2014. Business wise, its generally not a good idea to roll out a new product in December since most people have spent most of their money on Christmas. I think at the earliest, it will be 1Q 2015.

Good heads up thank you for that.

But I just can't take the leap of faith to trust and pay Microsoft with a subscription which I think is a little over the top. (price-wise) Also I'm not sure how Excel would perform on iPhone. Could it use macros? I would love to demo and pay after but even searching on youtube to see how it is in action only yields in iPad versions.

p.s. My original post was sent with the assumption that iOS Office supported iCloud Drive.

You can use Office Mobile on iPhone for free as a reader. You can't edit then, but it's no good as an editor anyway - it's way too limited.

OneDrive is also available for free. So you can test drive all you want!

Well if that's the case Google Drive is the same thing right?

There are some rumors going on on this thread. But not too many rumors around. I guess nobody really cares about Office for Mac anymore.

No leaks so far. But they are being tested, rest assured.

I don't think Microsoft cares too much about consumers for the release of Office... but early 2015 would be a good guess.

Office for iPhone is definitely not worth it. The subscription model is worth it if you use Office on a desktop. Neither Office for iPad nor Office for iPhone (and especially the latter) are worth the subscription price. I guess iWork can replace most of the functions of both Office for iPhone and iPad.

In private.

Yes, that's where they are supposed to be, right?

I came across these four articles published on Parallels blog about the differences between the Windows and Mac versions of Office apps:

http://blogs.parallels.com/consumer...ces-between-word-for-mac-and-word-for-windows

http://blogs.parallels.com/consumer...es-between-excel-for-mac-and-excel-for-window

http://blogs.parallels.com/consumer...powerpoint-for-mac-and-powerpoint-for-windows

http://blogs.parallels.com/consumer...tween-outlook-for-mac-and-outlook-for-windows

These articles are supposed to be quite accurate.

According to them, Word for Windows and Mac seem to be very similar in regard to features, with a few differences; PowerPoint for Mac has nearly the same features as well, although there seems to be some differences; Outlook and Excel, on the other hand, appear to have the most number of relevant differences.

I have no doubt they're working on it, but they may need to update 2011 for compatibility. For all but basic personal spreadsheets I have moved to Office 2013, but I was just working with a small personal one and the keyboard quit responding in the app. I had to quit and relaunch it. :/
