Curious to know if people knocking Surface devices own them or have used them. I currently own two laptops: 2020 M1 Macbook Air and 2018 Surface Laptop 2. They both have pros and cons, but there are a number of things I like better on the Surface Laptop: much better hinge, face unlock, 3:2 aspect ratio, touch screen (very useful when using on my lap), more comfortable keyboard deck. Overall I prefer the Macbook because of Mac OS and efficient, fanless performance but I certainly wouldn't say the Surface Laptop is lower quality.

A report in May highlighted some of the ways that Microsoft and Apple will become increasingly more competitive against each other. As both companies continue to invest heavily in augmented reality and artificial intelligence, the rivalry is expected to grow in the years to come.

I predict that neither augmented reality nor artificial intelligence will ever be anything more than a rounding error as a percentage of revenue for either company.

Is "the market" really stupid enough to punish Apple for a worldwide supply chain thrown into historic chaos by a once-in-a-century pandemic?

Apparently.

Also, what we're doing isn't really sustainable, is it? Apple is in the position of trying to pitch itself as a great steward of the environment and everything, but if they stop pumping out all these devices and convincing us to throw the old ones away, they die.

If they and everyone else do keep pumping out all these devices, disrupting ecosystems and tearing through the planet's finite resources at an ever-increasing pace, we all die.

If we were sane we'd be making things as modular as possible and keeping them for as long as we can, but, nope, can't do any of that because the market demands growth, growth, growth!

Apple this year brings the best rock solid devices and microsoft brings an windows 10.5 with a surface double laptop studio mess and takes the first place :))
Now you know how Wall Street analysts and experts think

Well you’ll have to think outside your upgrading an iPhone every year bubble and realize Azure and corporate licensing is where Microsoft makes its money. It definitely isn’t from its consumer hardware.

I’m not sure that Microsoft and Apple are really competitors in the way they used to be. MS is into corporates services and cloud. Yes, they have consumer products such as the Surface, but they lack a competitive phone which drives hardware companies today.

What’s interesting is that Apple doesn’t really have 1 solid competitor anymore. What other company is making the products Apple is making? Samsung is probably Apple’s biggest competitor on the hardware side because they make phones, a watch, and some computers. Google might actually be Apple’s prime competitor. They make a decent phone, they have a smart speaker, they have services that compete with Apple, and they sell computers. Amazon sells tablets and smart speakers, and they compete in services such as Apple+ and music.

In other words, as has been the case for many years now, Apple has carved out a place in the tech industry that is separate from all their competitors. IMO, they’re still the most exciting consumer tech company around, and it doesn’t appear that will change any time soon.

Good for MS.

I am a Windows user, use Outlook email, and have a couple Xbox games but that's as far as it goes. I really wish MS would give Windows more care and attention. It's not a terrible OS but I just know they can do so much better. When my PC is no longer good enough I'll be back to Mac.

Give it a minute its only because the stock market swings based on feelings rather then actual financial knowledge. To many feeling are allowed to invest :(

Contrary to some, there are people and businesses who use Microsoft for their livelihood.
My sister, an insurance agent, is required to use a Windows machine, so she chooses a Surface Laptop. In effect, there is no security software for Mac that matches what Windows has. Also, something like the change to ARM on Apple machines can really discourage companies. Windows can still run applications from 30 years ago, but when Apple changed to Intel it killed many older programs. How long until ARM machines can no longer run software from 2016? Apple is purely a consumer company and doesn’t focus on selling to businesses.

But...but...it was a "disappointing" quarter, what a crock. Buy it on the dip and hold it long term. Microsoft is executing, but Windows and their Windows hardware are the only things I see as disappointing.

I updated my gaming machine to 11, just to see what it's like, and it's pretty rough. I'd go so far to say it's pretty terrible in a lot of ways. Like, core functionality, that's fine. Everything works. But the fit and finish is so bad I get embarrassed on behalf of whoever programmed it whenever I use it.

For instance, switching desktops is just ugly. It's a four-finger drag on the trackpad, but it's so painfully janky and slow, and half the time the animation gets stuck for a second or so with the screen split down the middle between the two desktops. If you use the Windows version of exposé to select a desktop, there's no animation at all. It just dumps you onto the new desktop and you can see things like the wallpaper and windows "pop" in. It's ugly and jarring. On the Mac that sort of thing is smooth as butter.

Also, the interface is wildly inconsistent. Windows 10 wasn't much better, but 11 is just a train wreck. They clearly released it before it was ready.

I don't mind using it for gaming, but for anything else it just feels wrong. It feels the way Linux used to feel many years ago, as if it were designed by several committees that all seemed to hate each other.
