Good. The sooner Apple hits the ground with their insane pricing practices, the sooner we get better products at lower prices.

This.

I was contemplating a new Apple laptop and became frustrated with their pricing and model segmentation. Even when spending a mint I then still need to spend another bucket to get storage that was merely acceptable in 2010. Then I’m still faced with artificially created port shortage without upgrading further. Even then I can no longer perform the upgrades I’ve done in the past that keeps my system relevant. This is where I see value. On top of all that we’re seeing laptops with a high rate of keyboard failures yet Apple persists with the design.

I just voted with my wallet and upgraded my hdd with an ssd on my old system and will keep going with that. I wanted to spend the money but enough is enough. If the bottom needs to fall out to compel change then so be it.

As someone who's hated Microsoft for decades, it's well deserved.

The Microsoft of the Gates era was cutthroat. But the Microsoft of the Ballmer years was all defense and became a cancer to the tech community. Ballmer saw everything as about protecting the Windows/Office monopolies, so he'd spend tons of time trying to cripple emerging technologies through strategies like "Embrace Extend Extinguish". They'd sabotage open source projects and avoid supporting anything that helped applications work cross platform. The web was a threat. They kept developing stuff like Silverlight or wouldn't improve IE deliberately to make websites less cross-compatible.

Why? Because if things were cross-compatible, you wouldn't need Windows. This was a profitable short-term strategy. But it simply meant that Microsoft would also miss every tech boat. Web apps? Too focused on undermining it instead of becoming a leading provider of web technologies. Smartphones? Ballmer missed it completely. Cloud? Amazon jumped on it first. Etc, etc.

Microsoft under Ballmer was like if Steve Jobs was focused on saving the iPod and therefore never made a phone. And Ballmer slowly whittled away his lead.

Microsoft under Nadella is willing to experiment with new products regardless of how it might affect their other products, and it feels like a totally new company.

Microsoft’s cloud services are killing it. Good on them.
Professionally, I just switched from Google’s G Suite to Office 365 and couldn’t be happier.

Funny, we're on O365 and are planning on switching over to G Suite. $10 all in per user just can't be beat.

Well deserved, after two decades of using Apple laptops I find myself more tempted than ever to switch to a Thinkpad or Surface.
Both because Macbooks have changed to no longer suit my needs, and also because Windows 10 and the hardware OEMs seem to have improved a lot lately. And just imagine retrofitting a 1 TB SSD for $200!

Guess you haven't read about the October patch release fiasco Microsoft is going through right now. As much as I'd love to switch from Apple to keep them grounded (or at least to tell myself I'm not tied to them), the other side is certainly not greener.

What a stupid comment. It would have likely been more valuable.
Yeah. You can see that from all the profits they used to have before...
When Steve Jobs had to justify that by saying they prefer not to decrease the prices and keep their costumer base low instead of "shipping junk" which is extremely comical and unreal.

"Apple's stock prices are dropping" has come to mean "Apple's products suck"? What a sad world we live in.

Apple's iOS and macOS and tvOS and watchOS platforms are the best on the market, hands down. The fact that I was able to get a brand new XR at zero upfront cost through my provider shows that their phones are still priced competitively. Macs, on the other hand, are out of my reach at the moment. I really wanted to see a $600 Mac mini, not a $999 base price (in Canada). Sad that it came to this. Buying a used Mac mini is now on the table, and that won't be putting any more money in Apple's bank.
I don't think many people will argue that Apple's stuff is top notch. But just like a mercedes S-class is a better car in almost every respect compared to a honda civic (just picking random brands, not endorsing any one in particular), you can't argue the honda will take you from point A to point B the same as the mercedes. I certainly desire the mercedes (macbook) but can only afford the civic (dell inspiron). Of course if you rolling in it, then you don't have to worry about affordability, but I'm certainly not in that camp and I certainly don't feel like Apple products suck because I can't afford them anymore.

If Apple would unleash the power of the iPad by running full Mac OS and not iOS, they would clobber Microsoft with that move alone. Come on Apple cause you could be heading down!

Honestly for apple it’s about which features they want to stagger release. Sure they could do that but it would take away from Mac sales so they don’t wanna do that yet. Also they have to invent a reason why you couldn’t do it on older models. They also have to lock it down so smart people couldn’t put macOS on older iPads once they introduce.

No, it stock price doesn't mean their products suck, but most of them have sucked for awhile.

All the macbook lineup has done is increase in price, upfront, repair, and everywhere else, without actually offering much in return. iOS on the iPad is beyond showing it's age, because as usual Apple cannot be convinced that any view other than their own has merit. iOS on the iPhone is stagnant due to this years big release being a number of huge bug fixes.

The watch, I like for the most part. Except things like achievements are unpredictable and might be there or might not in a period of time.

Newsflash: anything in the world can be bought with no upfront cost if you have good enough credit

Well this is what happens when you focus on profits over people and you lose focus. The product lineup is overly expensive and confusing. The Macbook weighs less than the MacBook Air? C'mon. You don't sell the Timecapsule anymore because you don't update it and then say that it's not updated enough?
The current MacBook lineup is a real throwback to the 90's, before Steve Jobs returned. It's a real mess right now.
  • The 2017 12" MacBook should be $799 with a 128 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM.
  • The 2018 13" MacBook Air should be $999 with a 256 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM.
  • The 2017 13" MacBook Pro non-Touch Bar should be discontinued, and 2018 13" MacBook Pro Touch Bar dropped in price to $1,499 with a 256 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM.
This would give us three price-to-performance tiers:
  • MacBook (light use, smaller screen, lowest price)
  • MacBook Air (everyday use, bigger screen, medium price)
  • MacBook Pro (pro use, bigger + better screen, highest price)

Apple hasn’t been “Apple” since Steve Jobs died

Stock goes up = not proof of apple’s success.
Stock goes down = proof of apple’s failure.

Go figure.

If your definition of Apple was the company that Steve Jobs was the CEO of, there’s nothing anyone could have done after Steve’s death to keep Apple going.

I honestly think we'll see a new SE in early 2019 that takes on the XR design. People are clamouring for a slightly smaller XR, and a new SE would fit the bill perfectly.

I applaud Microsoft for pushing forward with a renewed attitude. Their increasingly open approach and platforms will continue to make Apple's closed approach more apparent. Android, in my opinion, is too open, leading to a frustrating experience for many users of that platform. Much like the older Windows-centric world where people would just buy a new PC when theirs failed (and quite often buying right back into the Windows world), so the same happens in the Android world. People keep buying the same problems over and over again.

I continue to be ecstatically happy with Apple's steady evolution of their platforms. I'm not interested in change for change's sake. And there's nothing I can't do with my systems, contrary to what many will use an argument against Macs and iPhones. It just doesn't exist. Our phones and computers, regardless of platform, are far more capable than most of us will ever be able to use.

Good for MSFT. They are the more interesting company right now. Time to add some gold to the iPhones and remove some more material from your iPads, Tim Cook. Set your innovation dial to 11!
There is nothing interesting about Microsoft. Windows 10 is their worst turd yet.

True. Apple had never been the most valuable U.S company when Steve Jobs was alive.

No, but they had passed Microsoft when he was still alive.

$749 "budget" Smartphone... $799 "entry-level" computer... $849 "basic" laptop (the older Air is still available I guess, for education)...

LOL...
Sucks you can’t afford it! Go to dollar tree, I’m sure there are plenty of off brand phones you can get for cheap.

Apple is never entry level. It’s a premium brand like Gucci, Canada Goose, or Mercedes.

If you can’t shell a measly $749 for quality, get a Honda Accord!

Just like Apple passed Microsoft while Tim Cook is still alive???

I don’t think Apple stock went down over high prices, Apples pricing structure has always fluctuated. I remember in about 2000 paying $1599 for a low end clamshell iBook G3 and that was the “low cost” Mac. And as far as the product line itself, it’s been like this before. Apple sold two versions of the iBook, the 12 inch and the 14 inch. They sold three versions of the PowerBook, the 12 inch (that was basically an iBook G4 with an aluminum body) the 15 inch and the 17 inch. Let’s also throw in the iMac G3 that sold alongside the iMac G4 and the PowerMac G5. All of those sold at the same time, Apple is just getting things in place before an overhaul.
