What is Microsoft on, comparing a Tablet with a Laptop they are two different categories, granted the surface can be detached and become tablet like just like the iPad Pro can be attached and become laptop like they are two different areas that are used in different situations were no one of them is better than the other as in their own category do their job well
The iPad Pro is clearly positioned as computer replacement

Out of the 6 sites we support 1 had Surfaces, bought in 2017 just before we took on the support of the site. We have just binned them, staff were forever complaining about them, battery was not great, slow, half we bought brand new M1 MacBook Airs for them which they are now loving and about 20 staff we have given old 2013 MacBook Airs from another site who have just refreshed the 2013 Airs with M1 Pro's. The battery life and performance of the 2013 Airs 8 years on still better than a 2017 Surface and that just says it all. My friends company bought a load of Surfaces 2 years ago, they have now all be scrapped as they could not handle the workload being put on them and swapped for HP laptops staff complained apparently all the time about them.. seems to be very common at least antidotally judging from here and my own experience.

I also remember the first few iterations of the Surface not being well liked by even the hardcore Windows fanatics like Paul Thurrott, if you dig back on his website you can find complaint after complaint with the early Surfaces , overheating, battery drain, blue screening.

If they fit your needs , fine, but personally I think the Surface is just trash for the price.

if you have a great product, you can advertise it without trying to put it above the competitors product. i think it's distasteful. apple advertises their products without even mentioning the competitors. i think since the whole "i'm a mac/i'm a pc" series, the haven't mentioned any other brand. and also the way these comparisons are done, be it intel or msft — they are completely skewed.
I’m not arguing on the taste thing, it’s just very normal practice in the USA to do competing ads, product placement inTV/ movies and such... and to be honest I try to ignore advertising as much as I can ...

Oh please! And people here call Tim Cook "Tim Crook" and call Apple "Crapple" and you're annoyed the fact that I have lost respect for Microsoft? Hmmm. Don't forget MS has been constantly putting out ads for the past 5 years straight trashing Apple's Macs and now the iPad. And you call my post harsh? WOW. That's a lot of MS defending. 🙄

This is an Apple fan site. Few people here call him that. And if I recall, Apple spent a couple of years trashing Microsoft with those Mac guy vs PC guy ads. But whatever your feelings about Microsoft, they helped make modern home computing possible. And, long with the Palm Pilot, there would be no iPhone without Microsoft's Pocket PCs - the first true smartphones.

There is only so much "growth potential" one is willing to wait for. I've been waiting since iPad 2 and it still isn't there. It's a great consumption device and some work can be done on it, just not MY work.
The iPad Pro (2018 12.9") that I've been using for the past couple of years, became my primary daily device in early 2020 when Apple launched iPadOS with trackpad support. That solved the biggest issue I had with it, using Numbers absolutely sucked having to touch the screen for every cell action. It's also not great for multi-tasking, but it's clear they're working to improve that too - and frankly multi-tasking on just about any 12.9" screen has its own challenges. I've held off on getting an M1 MBA because I am more interested in upgrading the iPad Pro because it is such a great multi-use device, imho.

My wife has the latest MS Surface Pro. Just bought it for her, because... she's having trouble using her Intel Macbook Pro in bed and the Adobe apps for the iPad Pro don't quite do everything the full computer versions do. Hopefully that will change. But, for the first time, I actually LIKED the ad for the Surface Pro. It was slightly comical, without being overly condescending. It came across as believable and honest. I was not offended by it, unlike the Justin Beiber (oops, I meant the ex-"I'm a Mac" guy... name escapes me at the moment) ad against the M1 Macs.

Well there you go, a prepubescent little boy says the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is better. Geez, I’ve had farts hang around longer than that little guy has even been alive! 😈

yea, it's purely a taste thing — that was the reason for my reply to your comment. you had asked whether msft should be endorsing macs, and my point was that they could just be advertising their products. when i see good automotive brands doing comparisons in their ads it always leaves a bad taste in my mouth — just show me what's good about what you're selling and don't worry about placing yourself above the competition.

And Apple had the equally young girl asking "what's a computer?"

Won’t talk about the merits of the devices, but the pricing is disingenuous.

Apple: full list price (no discounts)
MS: discounted price at MS Store.
Imo a computer needs a full operating system and we all know the iPad Pro is just a tablet with iPhone apps it can’t do the same thing as a windows or macos system
Unless your remote in to a much more powerful machine, then it can do more than a laptop (unless you remote in with that.)

After my second top of the line Surface Pro starting having issues, wont turn on or is so slow the mouse jitters when I move it.. good bye, the M1 Macbooks are finally buyable again after the last 4 years of crappy keyboard and silly touchbar stuff from Apple.

The Surface Pro 7 really is the better hardware, but if you’re partial to which OS you use, that’s a different story. Apple will never fully combine the features of a notebook with a tablet. Why would they when they can sell everyone 2 devices instead of 1?
You are funny too, just like Microsoft. I did a quick smell test taking the i3 machine they priced out as “superior “ with 4 GB ( 4 GB for windows, I know right?) the geekbench is half that of an iPad Pro, not to mention the custom designed Hardware/software for the Apple machine.
Sorry, they should try a fair comparison and up the specs of the surface pro 7 to something comparable in performance. Try the i7 with what would be equivalent in ram for windows? 12 GB? Oopsie the price comparison they just made broke the wrong way

M$soft saw the "what's a computer" ad and thought, "I bet we can make this snarkier."

Try split screening two Chrome windows on a Surface and watch it struggle. What a joke.
I work with after effects in my surface pro, full photoshop, 4k external display, iPad well... it has iMovie!!
not comparable devices

it has windows yes, and is a pain in many ways. But still worth the size and pen for drqwing or making masks in AE, PH or ligthroom, LR for iPad is quite good but is not the desktop version and handling my 4TB disk is not possible with the mu iPad. my macbook pro needs a wired cintiq plugged to the wall to achieve same features. IPad and macbook pro works well but not the same experience that MB+cintiq or surface pro.

at the end, for my pro needs I use the SFP and the MB+cintiq. The iPad is in the my kids room

In contrast to the Intel adds this is at least somewhat honest (as honest as an add can get) in pointing out differences.
The difference in price was my favourite….bottom of the range i3 surface, lowest storage and RAM vs a fully loaded 128Gb 12.9” IPP with magic keyboard.

Quick to mention the keyboard is heavier but forgets that the iPad is much lighter than the surface to begin with. Brilliant! MS has been taking marketing tips from Intel.

The number of people hating surface pro is mind boggling for me, but then, macrumours. Should not be a surprise after all.
Me would not use surface on the bed regardless of the size. Weight would be a major issue for long term use. Windows application for the most part require mouse and keyboard to function optimally, whereas iPadOS apps are generally optimised for touch from the get go.
With that being said, the longer I use touch the more I start to hate its inaccuracy and inability to perform certain actions on a lot of websites. “Right click” using finger is clunky and half the time it does not work. When two objects are very close to each other, touching it can have a very high chance to touch both, since hit area must be huge to accomodate various scenarios.
And for Apple keep insisting they won’t produce 2-in-1 devices, I just need to look at the design change at big sur. If touch screen Mac is not coming, why go out of their way amd leave plenty of spacing between icons and buttons, something that benefits touch a lot more?

and to be frank, part of my original comment was targeted at the MR readers who cry out wolf when some other business says something bad about Apple ... it's a business, not a cult (anymore), a very successful business led by business people.

To get a useful Surface though, it's WAY more than these silly ads let on. My Surface Pro 4 was nearly $2K. The $899 or whatever model it is they're talking about is so underpowered it's barely useful as a web browser, IMHO.
Yeah, I can see that being the case but would have to try one myself. Their website is pretty deceptive about what you get. Like I select the $900 model and am immediately looking at $1200 before tax in the configurator and can't even select lower spec configs, wtf.

IDK what those Intel "G" processors do, but they offer a 4GiB RAM config, which sounds abysmal. Hate to say it, but nowadays you need more than that just for the web.
