Windows needs a total rewrite!

Of course it does.

All Windows 8 is, is a bad UI overlay on top of same old Windows. That's essentially what it is.

MS doesn't have the guts or the daring to be *that* progressive and forward-looking to do a complete re-thinking and re-imagining of Windows (and to finally drop the old and tired "Windows" brand.) That's for other, more dynamic and quicker competitors to do.

Where was this guy during screen yellowing and overheating of the MacBook pros LOL?

You must not be hanging around real Macheads, because they are always saying how Intel Macs are terrible and like I long for the days of yore when we were still on PPC cpu, or when we move to the next logical step ARM cpus.

That's about how long I think Apple spent on the blueprint of Lion. Called it an afternoon.

We're definetly not using the same Lion that you're referring to then.

this is a rewrite.

Really, what makes you say that? A few tiles chucked around here n there and sure it must be rewrite!

All this excitement over Windows 8, lets hope you guys don't get lost in all that WOW :D

Im still trying to find the WOW in Lion. 2 years wait for a couple of features. Id rather have given the £20 to charity. Im comparing a finished OS to a finished OS. You're comparing a very early developer preview build?

I have a feeling I know what will be Windows 8 tablets' most popular accessory.

Since this wasn't even a beta shown but a DEMO - how can either of you even make that assertion. Ridiculous.

You want to criticize the OS - my suggestion is install it and use it when it's available. Otherwise - you're just spouting off at the mouth.

Just like when you insist that people who haven't really used FCPX have no business intimating that it's not ready for professionals.

The double standards is hilarious. And even more so are people who "review" something that doesn't exist yet and that they haven't used.

By the way - I can't believe iOS 7.0 on the iPhone 8 STILL doesn't let you delete a range of emails without having to tag each one individually. You would think after iOS6 and the iPhone 7 they would have implemented this.

See I can review things that I've never used or that exist yet either.

Good lord you ignorant fanboys are insufferable. Do you not realize this is a developer build? It allows devs a chance to play with the new APIs and get their programs ready.

And those criticizing the fan. What part of Prototype Hardware do you not understand?

Three things:
- 4-core ARMs;
- SSD storage;
- mobile GPU built-in;

Windows 7 probably could run pretty well on the above specs. I don't know why Win8 would require a fan. I expect WP7 tablets to 2012 and Win8 tablets in 2013 - the year I'll plan buying a tab :p

Windows needs a total rewrite!

this is a rewrite.

I have my doubts. Is it going to be a total rewrite like Mac OS9 to Mac OSX was?

Just because its a new upgraded windows OS, does not mean they don't reuse old code and how much of it they reuse.

So, i've looked into a magic crystal, and worked out the following.

Windows 8 will cost £200 to upgrade, and all it does is include a brand new crap Tablet UI for the desktop computer!

A new crappy UI, yeh thats soo worth the £200 and the time it takes.

And knowing Microsoft, their probably make it so you're locked to IE 10 (outside of Europe at least), great way to increase market share.

But yeh, that thing looks pathetic, why don't Microsoft do what their good at, making ****.

The problem is, you shouldn't NEED 4 cores of an ARM to run a ****ing tablet, its not a PC, its post-pc.

Lol, imagine you're writing a "Word" document, and you plug your printer in, and you BSOD due to the drive crashing.

Just because its a new upgraded windows OS, does not mean they don't reuse old code and how much of it they reuse.

Nor does it mean this old code needs to be rewritten. Let's face it, rewriting code doesn't guarantee you end up with something better in the end. Sometimes, it's just better to use that old tried and tested code that works than try to reinvent the wheel for the 5th time.

Personally, I've alternated between Thinkpads and Powerbooks/Macbooks for a number of years. It is very immature when people blindly make statements on anything.

Try everything, be open to everything. Up to 1 years ago, I was very happy with Apple. At this point, with the messy Lion situation and the aluminium madness, I find myself going Thinkpad again. Still no viable replacement for the Air though, the thing is unique.

I recon Apple will reach its peak in three-four years time, at which point they'll go the Microsoft way. I suppose that's gonna happen when Macs/iPhones/iPods become the "cock's" gadget.

Lots of Apple's appeal is just based on looks (likewise for Thinkpad). Being a designer, I can appreciate it (looks are extremely important in everything).

Otherwise, these days, windows or OSX, OSses are working fine fo 99% of people.

High-end Thinkpads are nice, although they usually cost more than a MBP. But with IPS displays, Quadro GPUs, they worth it.

For anybody interested, you can download the ISO file for Windows 8 developer 64bit at http://www.guru3d.com

Been running it since last night on my PC and it is... Strange. Metro is more of an App than an actual usable piece of windows. It can actually be disabled with a minor registry tweak. It is very much a tablet interface that only partially works with a mouse. At this point, it's more annoying than useful. But I will continue to play with it.

WOW is M$ marketing talk not Apple's nevertheless you're welcome to revert back to SL should you so wish. In particular what issues are you having with Lion or what doesn't it do that you'd like?

The problem with Windows is MS really don't know what to do with it, they're not quite sure what direction they want to take, so it's ended up being a "mishmash" I certainly suspect whilst it will be catered for the Tablet market / Touchscreen capable devices, the current UI how unpolished it is at the moment the concept doesn't doesn't appeal to me and I suspect I'm not alone there.

A tablet doesn't need 4 cores today because they don't do anything serious (productivity). I don't want to carry a laptop, a tablet and a phone in my bag. If I had all of them in the same package it would be nice. I don't care losing a couple of hours of battery life. If It can provide a MBP-class battery life, It's enough to me.

We are using different Lion OS's, Mine is 10.6.8, your's is 10.7 or 10.7.1- I need to get work done.

Also, the re-write, or whatever we split hairs on definitions was meant to be for ARM architecture. Who really knows how much code was re-used, and who cares. Windows 7 gets good reviews from what I hear.

Now, before you bash me with the Windows camp, let me clarify: I love apple products and services (own a lot of hardware and software for my business and personal life) But Lion is in for a world of hurt with Microsofts future offerings; apple had better step it up fast and furious with their OS platforms.

I was seeing if we were all on the same page with what we meant by rewritten. Obviously if its advertizing an upgrade some changes are done.

The Initially statement was that Windows needed a TOTAL rewrite, one of the responses was it was a rewrite.

A total re-write can make a big difference. We can see that with difference between FCP7 and FCP X for instance.

It works fine for me. But i feel its kind of a 'meh' upgrade. I certainly wouldn't miss it if i had to revert back. The only feature that i was interested in was Filevault 2. Thats a great feature. I think this is classic Apple. And IMO the best thing about Lion. I feel iCal is now ugly as hell. The mail upgrade is nice but i still prefer Sparrow. I kept the old scrolling for consistency as i use win 7 at work. I prefer the power of spaces/ expose over mission control.

Im concerned where Apple are going as much as MS. In another 2 years time how far along will OSX have moved?

Yeh, like we're going to start building films like Avatar on a tablet, or start playing Half-Life 2. Theres some things you just don't need nor work on a tablet.

Says who? You? Just curious. Because I'm guessing that there are plenty of poeple who would say that Lion "roared" a lot of features that many find more of a meow.

IE - Lion Launchpad. The problem is Apple really doesn't know what it wants to do or what direction it wants to take so it's a mishmash of OS and iOS.

Playing devils advocate here. It all depends on your perspective, biases and ability to make oneself technology agnostic instead of being a loyalist (to whatever brand)

Ok, so you'll buy an iPad. I will buy an Win8 tab because I'm able to draw Avatar mockups or playing half-life 2 in low-quality. Seriously speaking, I would like to browse the internet when I was in a café and plug my tab in a monitor and bluetooth keyboard / mouse at work. Also, I'd like to watch HD movies at home and maybe do video calls using my home wi-fi network. All with the same device. If you prefer mantaining a Macbook, iPad and iPhone, good to you.

I like to have alternative options. If Apple could provide an OSX+iOS tablet, that would be nice too.
