And Linux is like 28mb, with like 30 processes (but its modular)

microsoft in the 1990's. windows NT ran on 3 or 4 different CPU's and the workstation and server versions were essentially the same thing.

i read in a blog long ago that microsoft actually started this back in 2001 or 2002. bill gates even had Windows CE that was a stripped down kernel to run in mobile devices in the 1990's

Microsoft has always had the technology side figured out. NT and all of its successors have always been very stable and technologically advanced. Windows CE was a good mobile OS, technologically.

It's the usability where they've failed again and again, and it looks like Windows 8 will be just another one of these failures. The new interface is good for tablets, but not for desktops/notebooks, which will still represent at least 70-80% of all Windows computers for the next few years. About half of all computers are sold to corporations, they won't like this at all, and the first thing they'll do is switch back to the old desktop.

Maybe a Nokia N-something smartphone equipped with W8 and hdmi output will be enough for almost every computing needs from social networking to programming and image editing.

At this scenario, Apple multi-device business model will seem obsolete and will have to bring something new like an iAll equipped with a holographic display :p

My only question is this? What is Windows 7 adoption rate? Small

I don't know anyone that uses it. Hard-core windows people went back to XP or swtiched to a MAC. Windows 8 will be great, so we can up the mac adoption rate even more.

Betime it's released, well be on OSX 11.

But they have a choice to switch to the classic desktop or just keep things as it is. Either way, businesses & corporations will not be put off, especially as Windows 8 is far more efficient than the already efficient Windows 7.

Everyone wins!

I love Windows, but I'm not so sure I like the new interface. Maybe it will grow on me.

Which is exactly what you're seeing from MS. Again. That's all they've been doing in the OS/hardware department since at least 2006 (Zune): reacting to Apple and how Apple has shaped the market.

This is yet another example in a long line of the same. They are no longer competent first-movers. They can no longer rely on their "eventually we'll get it right" strategy (no one can in the current market), and they still have the same crew running the show that were there years ago.

So what's going to change this time? The number of reactions on the list will go up by one.

Yeap. Windows is a complete failure. I just do not understand why World prefers it to awesome OS/X (by a huge margin)

World doesn't _prefer_ Windows. Most people and nearly all corporations are forced to use it for compatibility reasons. Also, the only real competiton on computers is chained to costly high-end hardware, limiting its potential market share to under 20%.

Having said that, Windows is of course not a failure, from the money-making point of view at least.

How has Apple with their tiny little percentage shaped the market? Most PC's sold are Windows boxes. You do know that, yes?

You also have a very unhealthy obsession with Zune. You should see someone about it before it becomes an obsession of yours (some would argue it already is).

Have you been following the news for the past few years?

Apple has re-shaped the market and everyone else's priorities completely.

Fixed.

And cost of entry to OS X is ~$1000. Not everyone can buy into a Mac. But they sure as hell can and have bought into iOS - which incidentally, is being counted among "computer" OSes now.
