Especially ones that are that lame.

That UI is just bad. Metro? The Zune didn't sell it. WP7 isn't selling it.

Solution? Force it upon everyone. Yeah, that'll work.

MS still doesn't get it.

It's beyond stupid, but hey, just give them some time. It'll work. They promise. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

And I will actually love Metro UI on my new XBox Dashboard as it will perfectly integrate with Kinect.

Oh my - just think of a "Kinect for Windows 8 HTPC" - and you can just start to imagine why Metro may be a rock solid UI for that implementation in contrast to that stupid iTunes surfing box called AppleTV.

Man - too bad Apple refused to buy the Kinect technology when it was in startup phase - otherwise you would be jumping circles everyday as "Apple reinvented the way we interact with our media libraries".

Well, the fanboys are out in droves today I see...

I am not crazy about a fan and the heat issue but I like Windows 8 and I think it has real possibilities. I do not own an iPad (or any tablet) and have no intention of buying one. I prefer my netbook for my work

For me, a tablet is just another 'me too' device because many of the apps I run will never work without Windows.

A nicely done Windows Tablet offers some amazing advantages that the iPad and Android cannot meet. As a developer, I'm attracted to being able to write for Windows 8 and know it will run on a tablet, netbook, notebook, and desktop.

I suspect many people would be happy to have a table that can run their Windows apps on such a small form factor.

*IF* Microsoft can deliver this with good hardware, long lasting battery life, and a reasonable price many consumers and corporations will embrace it.

Competition is good so I hope Microsoft does well.

Let the modding down begin in 3...2...1...

Fisher price toy

Did someone forget to package a fisher-price toy with Windows 8?

This is another Vista/Microsoft Bob Hybrid failure! :D

Least lion works great. Microsoft needs to give up!

My big question... is Metro going to be forced on us for a desktop/laptop user? Again, touch-screen does not/will not work for a desktop/laptop use. That's my worry and if Microsoft don't give us a part of Windows 8 that will be tailored for desktop/laptop use, then they've got it all wrong again. I will definitely look at this preview release to explore this.

MS in their own mind want to get ahead of Apple's implementation of desktop/laptop and tablet OS in one whole swoop. Apple have gone the step-by-step route and integrated some of the most adaptable iOS features into the Mac OS X product. Whether Apple choose to integrate the two? We'll see. They could be playing double bluff with Microsoft and we may never see a universal OS for both laptop/desktop and tablet.

MS have been too brave IMHO to do this in one go and will confuse a hell of a lot of their Windows 7 average-joe customers once this gets to final release.

MS is marrying the two...so the idea is you are out and about with your tablet in the Metro UI part of the OS....however you get home and place your tablet in a dock and you have your full PC with mouse and keyboard.

Windows 8 is shaping up nicely. I have had access to a few earlier development builds but I can't wait to download the official developer preview!

Excellent stuff! :D

It looks like Windows XP with MediaCenter slapped onto it. Plus some gestures. Exciting only for the PC users.

yea uncle bill cant get any original ideas. Microsoft forgets its about the user, thats why their stock is tanking! :d

If Microsoft and the hardware manufacturers can pull this off, I do think it is a compelling product.
It can be the tablet + small PC combo that most people would love to own.
But I do believe it will probably take a few more years to refine the software and fine tune the hardware.
It's a good start and welcomed competition to Apple products.

Who will have the first tablet with a thunderbolt port and a dock to convert it in a desktop computer? Apple or MS?

Convergence is the future. No sane person like having three devices (a tablet, a phone and a workstation) that could be merged into an only one: voice calls, browsing and a mobile workstation for productivity. This is perfect.

I would love maybe a 7" slim device which could do phone calls, browse the web and run productivity applications like Netbeans, OpenOffice and Photoshop.

Why do you care then? Go enjoy your Apple devices and don't worry about any other technology or company.

I fail to understand why others HAVE to fail so that Apple (in your eyes) remains the best.

Someone who is mature can understand that competition is better for everyone and that you can have more than one company in any industry.

I can only imagine the world you prefer where there's only one provider for healthcare, computers, supermarket, car manufacturer, etc...

Lovely.

Well DUH that's why we had iOS for like two years now, Please! Really!

I concur, only because, I don't know what to say right now. Metro does not look as good as it does on a Windows phone, but this is very early stuff here.

Yes - please - let's take you seriously since you're so clever with the acronyms. Grow up.

No. Metro doesn't mean someone who is gay and doesn't know it. Can we laugh at your ignorant statement?

Metro is short for Metro Sexual (what you're referencing)

Feel free to google that or read this to educate yourself instead of gay bashing - which by your "ha ha" comment - you clearly were doing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrosexual

Or, it took its name from the King County Metro whose signage inspired the design and any attempt to call it "gay" is childish.
