Just my observation but I think you like these ads because of the comical vocals from Siri, there's really nothing in the ad enjoyable about the way MS advertises the Surface, IMO.

It was quite enjoyable to me as well. Sense of humor is a pretty individual thing I've found.

Is that the world you want to live in? Slow crappy internet and 'various age' PCs, side loading word documents via USB?. Thats why everyone is laughing at Microsoft here because that's the dream they seem to be selling, and they're puzzled why nobody's buying.

Nah, that's the real world. Anyhow no one is talking about sideloading windows documents for example, that's why you can make Word documents automatically save to the cloud for access on any word enabled device. I believe the issue was larger files that might be easier, quicker, and/or more cost effective to locally transfer than doing it over the cloud, although as has been pointed out ad nauseum you CAN do cloud functions on windows as well.

Dude. This is platform wars. Apple vs. Microsoft. Don't think of this as an advertisement so much as an all out salvo on our personal tastes and choices. You can't laugh at things like this. You have to take them totally surisly.

Lol, yeah the level of intensity of people can be funny at times. Use what you use if it suits your needs. That's why I use an iphone over Windows phone, it suits my needs better. I'm not going to sit and argue over a marketing campaign when the entire universe is build on marketing campaigns.

That's the way I think about it. It's an advertisement. Big whoop. It's not that great, not that bad. All things considered, it's pretty forgettable.

The one thing that gets me is that you know...you know...the people who are calling out MS for being tasteless and bullying would be rolling in the floor if Apple released a response ad highlighting W8's lack of a digital assistant. Like you ask it a question, and it just sits doing absolutely nothing there while Siri says something witty off to the side. At least half the people posting here would eat it up, no questions asked.

Well no, in an ideal world no.
I'd not have to go to work, we would not have starving people, I would live forever and be a billionaire.

But that's not the world I or you live in.

As as we live in the real world where very few business and consumers have Apple computers, then for the world as it stands, a USB drive is a fast, neat, small and fast way to transfer large amounts of data between a wide variety of different machines.

If cloud storage, like dropbox gave similar upload and download speeds of even USB 2 then it would held of course, but then you still have the issue that many in the REAL WORLD don't have a fast enough cable connection to make that even totally practical right now.

It's all very well working in a small metropolis with Apple gear at home and in your office and all your friends with Apple accounts. But that's not the real world at large.

I've always laughed at anti-Apple ads pointing out useless advantages to other platforms, like expandability. I don't have a real keyboard? Yeah, because I don't need or want one. I don't have a USB port? Yeah, because I don't need one. I have cloud services and- wait for it- an expansion port. It's not USB, though! LOL. Sigh. The proof is in the sales.

So if Apple doesn't offer the feature it's useless? If you don't need it, no one else does? Interesting.

Don't buy it just yet! They will sweeten this deal even more, soon to be buy 1 get one free just like at the supermarket :) M$ has no vision, what a piece of junk!

"The Proof Is In The Sales" is about the last thing an Apple fan should say. It's as if saying usefulness and quality directly correlates to sales. Which is, in turn, saying that Macs were useless compared to Wintel PCs.

...cuz if they were good, they would've sold. Right? Right?

But that's different.

I seriously think this ad benefits Apple more than Microsoft. From all these silly reasons and the sudden price drop, if I were an ignorant user I would think there has to be a reason why Apple can keep selling the device for such a price while the new surface all ready has a significant discount. Microsoft should find a new way of marketing their product, unless they make something brilliant and unique like apple did with the "I´m a mac" commersials. These commersials for be have no better effect than the Samsungs mocking the iphone....It convinces me I´m still cheering on the best team.

...Also, the other reasons aren´t really good reasons to buy a Surface either. The stand, no thanks I rather have that in a smart case than the built in crap - I want the main hardware to be minimalistic...The Usb, no a big deal, the future is wireless...the snap on keyboard, do you really want it you find something similar for the ipad as well, so they are lying....besides I suspect the keyboard for the surface to be no better than a screen keyboard of the ipad, at least it looks that way. Never heard anyone say anything amazing about the snap on surface keyboard either.

Same reason AAPL is down 40% since October

Not really. Most of Apple's drop has been analysts etc giving out totally off base info about alleged delays, production issues etc. but Apple's sales figures etc have been steady or better than the quarter before. There have been a couple of 'compared to last year' drops but those are logical when you look at how something releases last year and not that quarter this year.

And then there's the overhyping of things like the tax issue in ways that imply Apple did something illegal when they didn't. But bloggers want hits so they don't worry themselves over lack of integrity or telling the truth.

On the flip, Microsoft reported an almost billion dollar loss due to lack of interest in their product. That is huge. And worthy of a stock value drop.

----------

If Apple came out with a new iPad called the iPad X and it ran a full version of OSX and cost twice what the iPad does (yes everyone on MR would want one), it would still be very confusing to all the non-fanboys.

Yep. There are things appropriate to the tablet in terms of general use and things not. Apple has focused in those things and the power etc needed to do them. That's not to say that the time isn't perhaps here for them to allow power users the means to step up a bit (in Mac OS also) but those items won't be the focus. Not of design, iOS or ads.

----------

The Apple store employees are yawning out of exhaustion from selling too many iPads. The Microsoft store employees are yawning due to a lack of Surface sales, everybody is at the Apple store.

My local mall has both stores and the above holds true every time I am there. Apple store packed to the gills. MS store has a bored employee watching that the kids playing the Xbox demo don't try to steal anything

I actually watched said bored employee jump to his feet when a customer walked in and said he had a question. Pity it was 'is there an apple store in this mall'

And if people really cared about USB ports would iPad be selling in the 10s of millions?

I don't think this is a logical argument point. People buy products all the time for various reasons and features/benefits have different priorities for people. So it's quite possible for millions of people to buy the iPad wanting a USB port but not to the point that it keeps them from purchasing it. Or they just figure they will do without. That's not to say that those buying iPads wouldn't love to have one nor that iPad sales could be even greater if they had one.

Consumer behavior isn't that black and white.

First the Zune, then Windows Phone and now the Surface. Every one a flop.

Maybe MS should stick to what they know rather than trying to copy Apple.

Windows Phone has done nothing but slow, steady grow since it first came out. Hardly a flop.

On top of that, MS has been in the smartphone business far longer than Apple. I'd hardly say they're copying.

Even so, they still copied Apple because they knew that some day Apple was going to come out with a phone.

LOL! So true! These idiots are so scared of Apple they can't help but copy Apple even on rumors!

Did you ever hear of smartwatches until all the Apple-centric websites I visit exclusively for my tech news started talking about smartwatches? I didn't! Now you hear about everyone building smartwatches!

Why can't anyone else innovate?

Oh it goes deeper than that. Even the WEBSITES copy. I mean - before there were Apple-centric websites - there was never a tech website dedicated to another company. I can't remember a single one

That's because Apple invented the modern internet. It was made on a bunch of Steve Jobs made computers, you know. Only he had the vision necessary to create the World Wide Web.

We should call it the Steven P. Jobs Memorial Information Superhighway to honor him.

Spinedoc while I like you, again, you are part of the problem. Microsoft doesn't innovate and they actually stifle it. People like you defend them and their behavior which in turn is an attempt to keep us in the dark ages.

Read this: http://www.vanwensveen.nl/rants/microsoft/IhateMS_1.html

You try to mask an OS that is overcomplicated and average at best by associating intelligence levels of the the users of different products. In reality, Microsoft makes average products that does some things average to good at best. Apple and Google have great products that do most things great to fantastic at a minimum.

Everyone learned their lesson with Microsoft and have patented everything to avoid the blatant copy techniques MS deploys and rewraps as innovation. Now that MS is struggling to copy like in the past, they are showing their true innovative chops by releasing crap products like Surface, Windows Phone, and Windows 8. Yes, I know you will beat on your chest and go from forum to forum pronouncing your love for all things MS but the fact still remains that consumers have spoken and the products suck. Microsoft's quarterly earnings reflect this. Your mouth and posts do not. Which of the two (MS Quarterly Statements or your posts) are more grounded in reality?

Absolutely. I bought the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Ipads because I wanted the tablet form factor, even though I had to put up with a toy OS and what was basically just a consumption device. Not a single day passed where I would not daydream about having Windows or even OSx on a tablet like the ipad, but nothing was out there yet so I tolerated the ipad all these years. "Tolerated" is a pretty good word IMO.

Lol, please tell me this is sarcasm. I didn't see a smiley so I'm not sure...

As far as I know the kickstand is included. But I can't confirm, as I have never seen a surface out there..

Let me try to parse it for you. The Surface does not come with a keyboard. It must be purchased separately much in the same was that an iPad does not come with a smart cover but you can purchase one separately.

The point is that the keyboard showcased in the advertisement is an addon that you have to buy separately and although the iPad does not have a built in stand, it can be purchased separately much like the keyboard for the surface.

Comprende? If not, then I cannot help you sorry.

I'm still trying to understand how Microsoft can keep running these hit pieces and Apple still plans on switching the default search in it's devices to Microsoft Bing.

Because Apple made a tonne of these and Microsoft still found the time to make Office for Mac. It's just advertising.
