I did notice that my OneDrive folder was not searchable (as in, got no results), but I thought it was a synch issue. Are you saying they've changed something that makes it un-indexable?

Edit: Having looked at the OneDrive folder in my user folder, I can see that it is now an alias, not a folder. When I go to show original, I get "OneDrive", which has no path or point of origin. It can't be reindexed in Spotlight, and it is unsearchable.

This... is a problem! All of my work files are in there, and I need to search them.
Exactly... the folders are relocated to /Users/<username>/Library/CloudStorage/

Executing mdutil against that location just throws "Error: unknown indexing state."

I think one of two things are happening here: 1) either Microsoft didn't use Apple File Provider API properly (like maybe there's a flag to allow for this to be searchable); 2) Or a MacOS bug is causing this.

My next steps: 1) Update to 12.1 and rebuild the index; 2) Install in a new virtual machine and check if the behavior's the same and go from there.

Will report back as I have more info.

Any luck on this? The lack of searchability in the new OneDrive basically makes this unusable for me - I just had to search for an old project, and I only found it becuase I was smart enough to make an iCloud backup before I started tinkering the OneDrive reinstall.

I have a version downloaded from the app store, anyone know if it will be just an update I will need to download, or will I have to re-download the whole damn thing through a standard installer?

One other thing I have noticed - if you have OneDrive in your Finder sidebar (as I always have done), you cannot drag any files onto it. For that functionality, it has to be listed in Locations (which requires "cloud storage" to be selected in the Finder preferences).

I presume this is related to the changes that make OneDrive non-searchable.

Here's what I heard back from a 365 Technical Lead for OneDrive on the Files-On Demand issue:

Please note that the only version of OneDrive that can work with the Apple Silicon version of OS is the one in the preview version. The Preview version of OneDrive that is compatible with your device is at the development and testing stage.

Apologies that this needed feature is not available at the moment.

However, you can monitor the update on the feature by following the Microsoft 365 Roadmap using below URL

According to the roadmap, the Files On-Demand refresh was to be included in a November 2021 preview - unclear whether that's a different preview than the one that is compatible with Apple Silicon, given it's clearly not in the AS preview

Small update:

Installing OneDrive from this link (https://oneclient.sfx.ms/Mac/Insiders/21.245.1128.0001/universal/OneDrive.pkg) to a fresh Monterey VM, installed the Apple Silicon version BUT to the old, indexable file location, not the new location. Very weird.

And after some more testing with old and new version, it seems like the File Provider update seems to happen with older version also (?); but there's *something* that triggers it, I think it may have to do with me synching SharePoint libraries on top of regular personal OneDrive folder, but my testing wasn't definitive. I'm giving up for now until I have more cycles to spend on this.

Please keep information coming.

P.S. As you're testing, keep in mind, there's a way to "Reset" the OneDrive installation by running /Applications/OneDrive.app/Contents/Resources/ResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command; Just uninstalling OneDrive or even using AppCleaner, doesn't remove the configuration.

I'm not sure I followed all that but I also sync a shared library on top of my own OneDrive for Business folder

Due to the Index issue I'm glad that I'm sticking with the AppStore version until the official release. I'm guessing that Microsoft will update it in App Store and then when I update the app at some point it will convert it self to M1 Native :)

I clicked on "revert to Intel version", which it seems to have done, but it hasn't changed anything to do with the file system and the non-searchability. I guess I need to completely uninstall and reinstall again?

I had a lot of issues with the new beta version- whether running it in Intel or Arm mode. It kept giving me warnings about file deletions when I haven't tried to delete anything from OneDrive in a long time, would sometimes leak memory so that it would bring the system to a crawl, and would never get settled from a sync. I tried resetting OneDrive and starting from scratch a couple times- it just wouldn't work reliably. It's hard to say how much is the FileProvider API or bugs in the MS code, but something needs a lot of work before it's ready for prime time. I've reverted back to the App Store version and haven't had an issue since.

Microsoft really failed on indexing OneDrive ARM... But they FAILED HORRIBLY with Outlook for Mac v 16.56 running in MacOS Monterey 12.1 (both the current non-Beta versions) on my 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max 64GB.

Outlook email Searches FAIL 100% of the time. Microsoft Support said to rebuild my Outlook User Profile Spotlight indexes (no change)... then rebuild the ENTIRE Spotlight index on my MacBook Pro M1 Max (no change)... before FINALLY admitting it is a bug that they're "aware of". They also said to switch between "Old Outlook" and "New Outlook" by sliding the toggle switch in the to of the Outlook window (HUGE PITA since it requires me to re-authorize all my email accounts which doesn't work either).

WOW. What a huge PITA waste of my time.

Microsoft's Macintosh Outlook Team needs to get their act together. This is ridiculous to have BUGS this bad. How did this ever get out of Outlook for Mac "Beta Testing"? Oh that's right, Microsoft users ARE all Beta Testers...

On my MBP 16 M1, my OneDrive (AS) version is 21.245.1128.0001. Everything seems to work. I can search OneDrive successfully. I have a "Turn off Files on Demand" button next to the "Manage Blocked Apps" button.

On my Mac Mini M1, my OneDrive (AS) version is 21.245.1128.0002. When moving around in the folders, there is lag. There is no buttons to manage Files on Demand. Syncing doesn't seem reliable as I moved an app to OneDrive on my MBP16 and tried to run it on my MacMini and it says it's incomplete or corrupt.

Going to try to remove the .0002 version and install the .0001 version on my Mini.

EDIT: I tried installing my .0001 version but in the end, it wound up being .0002 so some auto-updating seems to be in effect. Removed again and installed AppStore version (Intel).

Ever since the upgrade too 21.245.1128 (Apple Silicon or Intel), OneDrive seems to be using Apple File Provider and moved locations of local files. Issue is that Spotlight does not seem to index this new location. I tried rebuilding the index, but no luck.

Anyone else experience this?
I started testing this in a Monterrey VM. So far I'm able to search file contents without issue for any files downloaded on the device- for example in folder I select "Always keep on device" or on files I've opened and are currently cached.

Of course, files that are not actually on the Mac will not be indexed or found in spotlight (other than by filenames).

I believe that if a file was once on the the computer and indexed, and then the file is relegated to "cloud only", the contents SHOULD still be part of the index and the searchable- but I need to test that.

So far the new OneDrive has been running fine on a clean VM. It's hard to see if the behavior in my live environment was from previous settings, caches, sync folder location issue, or some conflict with some other service.

Since yesterday I am on 21.250.1205.0002 (Standalone Apple Silicon Preview) and so far things are working. Yes, OneDrive folder under my Documents folder is still a referenced link to the library folder but in Finder all appears to be searchable (and findable, if that is English :) ).

Microsoft had complied Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 4 for ARM64(build 10.0.10586.1000.th2_srv1_nano_dev2.151112-1500)in 2015,it is sad that Microsoft is left behind in ARM64 ecosystems

Don't forget Windows 8 RT in 2012 for the surface
They clearly missed a turn by putting an underpowered ARM chip inside their Surface lineup and having such a high price

Microsoft pushed OneDrive utilizing Apple File Provider API into production channel last night. My SharePoint Library searches are broken once again with no fix in sight...

I started testing this in a Monterrey VM. So far I'm able to search file contents without issue for any files downloaded on the device- for example in folder I select "Always keep on device" or on files I've opened and are currently cached.
This may be an issue for synced SharePoint libraries, not personal files; although everything's broken for me at the moment..

What version of OneDrive does the problem arise? I tried the preview release (which broke searching), then went back to the Intel release. As of right now, my OneDrive is still searchable, but the release is 22.002.0103.0004 (standalone), copyright 2022. According to Activity Monitor, it is still Intel, not Apple.

I've been on "Stable" channel with automatic updates disabled inside the auto-update utility (for this exact reason). In true Microsoft fashion, it still updated itself while i was working on a PowerPoint and PowerPoint wasn't able to save the file mid-way... Spotlight hasn't indexed anything, unsure if it ever will, version 22.002.0103.0004 (Standalone). This version moved links in Finder from "Favorites" to "Locations" and updated location on the file system.

I believe the issue you linked is most likely related, although unsure to what degree.

Crap. Wish I had read this before I decided to go to the Apple Silicon preview build just now. I seem to have ended up in the situation where Files on Demand no longer works properly for files always available on device (no they're not).

"But the move will also make those apps a bit less flexible—Microsoft says that the new version of Files On-Demand can't be disabled. That might be confusing if you expect to have a full copy of your data saved to your disk even when you're offline."

This is a necessity, as Apple changed the API for cloud storage and enforces its own file handler process now. OneDrive or Droppbox have to adapt, nevertheless.

My new 16" M1 Max MBP arrived and I'm trying to set it up with all native mac apps first. I noticed that even if you download OneDrive from the Mac App Store or direct from microsoft it is requiring Rosetta2 to run. Not sure what I'm missing here as so far nothing else has required it.

Is part of OneDrive still Intel?
