Most people don't buy new phones every year either. And those that do and can afford it are like those that lease/buy a new car every year.

For the majority, an iPad 1 is still sufficient.

Nope iPad 1 lags worse than android 2.0 under ios 5 or was it 6 I forget but one of the updates crippled it.

My logic would makes more sense if you knew the above. ;) and you'd know the above if you weren't a die hard apple enthusiast. Ice cream bars don't gain functionality either yet we buy more than one a year, most of us. But again, we aren't talking about ice cream either. I would suggest you learn a bit of logic before pretending to be an expert on the subject.

Most people don't buy a new phone, computer or iPad every year. Other than upping speed, there's not that much more you can add to such devices other than minor things...

. I'd be willing to bet there are people out there who aren't thrilled that the iPad has gained absolutely zero additional functionality since the iPad 2. The functionality it gained over the original iPad were cameras.
iPad satisfaction rate is off the charts you have anything to support your Argument

Step 1: Sell iPad 4 to MS
Step 2: Buy amazon card at MS store
Step 3: Buy Apple card at amazon
Step 4: Buy iPad 5.
Step 5: Brag to MS that you have a better iPad than them.

It's not about what they are going to do with the ipads, it's about getting their products out to the market. I'd be willing to bet there are people out there who aren't thrilled that the iPad has gained absolutely zero additional functionality since the iPad 2. The functionality it gained over the original iPad were cameras.

I love how people completely disregard OS updates.

Are any other companies bringing something new to the table?????

Samsung have released the same tablet three generations in a row, Google have released the Nexus 7 and 10 but what innovations do they bring, higher resolution, excess heat, lags like crazy and has a "mind of it's own" when inputting gestures.

As for buying a new tablet every year, most people probably wouldn't, I have an iPad 2 and will get a new Mini when it comes out and don't care if Apple don't add a million different functions that don't work just for the sake of it.

I have zero interest in Microsoft's Surface (and the abysmal sales tend to reinforce that as a global sentiment)... but I do admit that this is a good idea in general, accepting the competing brand's products as trade-ins is a good idea.

In fact, even Apple should at least consider this idea.... altho for the Apple side, it does not work so great because of the fact that Android-based and Microsoft-based tablets have far lower resale value compared to Apple's iOS products. Browsing any Craigslist or eBay listings for iPhones and iPads will confirm that Apple's iPads and iPhones command a far superior resale value than the competitors.

Does a car get any additional functionality every new model year? It does the same thing...get you to and from a place. Only engines, look, bells and whistles get upgraded really.

You're logic is really really bad.

Talk about bad logic- bells and whistles = functionality. Nobody is expecting the new Corolla to fly or be able to hover, what they're hoping for is a standard iPod hookup or whatever.

Similarly, people just want more bells and whistles in their iPad. Fingerprint sensor, NFC, etc. would be a good start.

In other business news..

Trade in your Cadillac for a new Kia

Why would I want to downgrade?

This is like the Kia Dealerships advertising they will gladly take your lightly used Mercedes Benz on trade-in....

They're priced fairly similarly at new. More like a Kia dealer willing to take in your Toyota on trade.

Where people get the idea that Apple products is more premium than other mainstream brands is beyond me.

Comments like this are a great example of how someone with not much understanding of practically anything can say something @#^% and think they have contributed in an intelligent manner by using the classic "I am willing to bet...."

So you think there isn't anyone out there who is upset that the ipad hasn't gained more functionality? For someone flaunting the word "intelligent" you're lacking basic common sense.

The only real functionality I personally need on an iPad has more to do with the os. But I believe you're right it's a bit stupid that the iPad at its core has the same exact os as the iphone making its limitations equal to when it should be able to do more with all that extra power and screen real estate. I would prefer added features that make sense on a tablet but not on a phone but alas we must resort to the app store. This isn't just knocking on ios either android has this problem with not just core functionality but doubly so with apps. This is where the iPad shines, actual real tablet apps that allow u to do more than your smartphone. Now why can't we have that with the core OS? I understand there are potential problems with fragmentation but I like the idea of splitting the tablet from the smartphone OS much like ios was split from OSX. That's why to me a tablet is a waste of money and why I don't own one.
If you owned a tablet then you would understand that it gives much different experience than a smartphone.

What do they do with the iPads? Also, WTF, only $200 trade-in value that you are forced to spend on a Microsoft product? I'd just sell the thing and take the cash.

Seriously dude? What other functionality do you want it to do with today's technology? Actually, computers have had the same functions as many iterations. You don't like those either? And no, we don't buy iPads every year.

SD slot and USB for starters

What functionality does the iPad need to gain?

microsoft wanted them to trade in the iPads so that they could copy the parts inside and use it for next surface tablet.

Most of the comments in this thread are so naive and childish it's just embarrassing. :(

I am sure they will give me a pretty penny for this:

I've used a tablet a few times never owned one. It does offer a different experience I get that, but functionality wise not so much. That's why I don't like it. The different experience is simply not worth the money to me.
