Not sure about other people but for my tastes. I'd rather see icons that represent a function than the face of a person. Not everything I do on a smartphone is people related. And that's Microsoft's big mistake with Win mobile 7.

Looks like a counterfeit what? I guess you didn't know you can change your UI now did you?

Go ahead give it a try, "Think Different" for a change.

Computer is a counterfeit. Those people typically counterfeit their software too.

Totalfinder on the other hand seems cool.

So someone thinks driving a car with a round steering wheel and round wheels is dated and boring.

Let's make the steering wheel extends through the window! That'll surely make it hip.

I guess some people like triangle wheels too?

Yeah why don't we make the wheels triangles too? Have you had your coffee yet?

Seriously. Tech geeks are like the opposite of the general public. Apple doesn't change the look, everyone on engadget and macrumors thinks it's dated and boring. Facebook changes a little bit, everyone forms groups to try to "convince" Facebook to bring back the old design.

I guess for Apple, there's no design that ever just works, it has to be overhauled constantly. Facebook must have hit perfection years ago.

A number of handset manufacturers and carriers have committed to the Windows Phone 7 Series platform, and the first handsets based on the operating system are scheduled to become available in "holiday 2010".

Competition? Competition is good where competition leads to better goods for the consumer. Sometimes, competition leads to cheaper, more quickly obsolete goods. Well, I guess if it has a year to be released, it can't be obsolete just yet.:p

This is actually bad news if you think competition is good for Apple products. (Though, an announcement made now has a limited impact on what Apple will most likely release this summer.) Apple can basically keep doing whatever it wants, improve the iPhone in a few small ways, and be fine.

I think the UI looks good. It's different. A lot of people are going to like this. Scrolling across rather than down doesn't seem like big jump to me. I think that it would become second nature pretty quickly.

I think that we're just going to have to wait and see how it turns out in the flesh. If they can make the Office hub powerful and productive then it will be a useful tool for a lot of people.

The iPhone UI is getting a bit tired. That's not Apple's fault. I just think it's been copied so much that all the copying has contributed to that sense of 'app' box lethargy. Okay, these tiles are boxy too, but I'm interested to see how it all works out.

How many of you actually watched the MS video?

I'd like to know how many times did the presenter try to scroll and the phone ignored him, so he had to do it again? How many times did he press a square or button and have to do it again because the phone didn't respond?

This SoSoSo reminded me of the Windows Mobile CE's lack of response to user touch.

I liked some of the things the phone could do, but it's no more responsive then the MS mobile OS was three or more years ago.

Oh, while I'm at it, what was with the "Whack-a-mole" pop-up of the guy's MySpace photo? Talk about visually distracting nonsense!

Secondly this OS has been out for how long now? New features have been added which are great (i.e. copy & paste) but the UI as a whole has remained the same. Give us SOMETHING.

Why?

That sounds like change for change's sake. Which is dumb, unless there's a major upgrade in usability. I'd rather here more about that than just change itself.

nice

Finally something good to look at, maybe they will cary the effort to Windows 8, because 7 is still lacking the feel of a finish product.

Because comparing something physical to something digital is cool too amirite?

Digital operating systems can always be changed to be more flashy and more intuitive, a pencil however does two tasks...writes and erase. That's all its ever done, just as car wheels are round to enable a smooth ride, it would make no sense whatsoever to have square or triangle wheels.

As a 5-year WinMo user that jumped ship to the iPhone 3G back in 2008 because of the UI, let me just say that a few hours ago, the iPhone 4G (whatever it will be) in July was a no-questions purchase.

Now, it's a non-purchase for me. Microsoft has, IMO, really brought their A game here. It looks fantastic. I need to see more, but the iPhone OS is, again, IMO, in desperate need of a UI upgrade. It's just too clunky to use and disorganized.

I don't think we're going to get it. I don't think we're even going to see iPhone OS 4.0 this summer. And then, to expect Apple to make a drastic change in the usability and overall design of the phone? This is Apple, we're talking about!

I need to see a little bit more but, so far, I'm kind of looking forward to a WinMo7 phone but I'll need to see how the handsets shake out and how it performs on a final model. I know straight up I'm not buying an HTC-designed device unless they completely leave the software alone.

Do we really have to wait 4 months to see what Apple are replying with? Lot of momentum to lose if you ask me.

iPad was a good opportunity to show us what a new interface might look like, but I'm thinking that OS4 won't change much visually

Actually, you have to wait 9-10 months to see how much of the demo Microsoft actually delivers this time (assuming on-time delivery, but I think MS has a better track record of cutting features/polish to fit the announced time schedule on their devices team than on their OS or Office teams).

By the time you're actually able to decide iPhone 4 vs MS Win 7, you'll have seen everything the iPhone has to offer (and seen it in real life action on the street and in the office) for at least five months. I think it's Apple's marketing strategy that will win out in this iteration. MSWM7's competition is iPhone 4, but it is coming out so late that it will tend to instead be compared to iPhone 5.

IMHO, the MS FUD machine tends to do well in keeping people from buying competitors' offerings, but in this case so much of the market has been bitten by MS's anemic mobile OS's at this point, and they have really no momentum going in, that FUD might not be a winning strategy. In an insurgent marketing strategy (which MS needs to be waging right now, but has no idea how to run) you need to get devices into peoples' hands when the marketing buzz is hot, not almost a year later.

It's somewhat interesting, though: MS needs to play the insurgent, and instead they are pretending they are the dominant player and trying to keep people from buying their competition; Apple is the dominant player by far, and they are keeping their cards incredibly close to the vest, playing the insurgent marketing strategy for all it is worth. Either would do better by realizing its role in the market and honing their strategy appropriately, but I think the insurgent pretending dominance will hurt MS (and consumers) a lot more than Apple's dominant playing insurgent will/has.

The Zune team is definitely who I'd have build a phone interface. The Xbox Live functionality while annoying in the past has grown on me.

Hopefully they'll bring Windows Media Center into the mix as well.

Microsoft has a lengthy interview and walkthrough available on their Web site.

http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/LauraFoy/First-Look-Windows-Phone-7-Series-Hands-on-Demo/

Interesting notes:

- UI is called “Metro” based on Zune HD UI (duh)
- Hardware Search button that launches phone/bing search
- Multi-touch is enabled in browser
- Browser is based on desktop version of Internet Explorer
- Designed to be used without physical keyboard, but physical keyboard is optional for manufacturers
- Charlie Kindel, who previously ran the Windows Media Center group and then the Windows Home Server group, will run the Windows Phone 7 Applications Group
- Has iPhone-like data detectors to enter phone numbers/addresses from HTML documents (like Leopard and iPhone mail)
- Background/color scheme is user selectable
- Supports push notifications
- Heavy on the animations
- Facebook and Windows Live integration lasts throughout device including picture gallery
- Keyboard has emoticon support

Zune has a 2% share of the market, apple coming in at about 70% (usa data only)

So all your post shows is that a massively higher percentage of ZUNE users needs support in a forum ;-)

HAHAHA... That same thought sprung to my mind as well.

BTW, doesn't the Zune only sync on a PeeCee? So this phone will be crippled too?

How many times now has MS totally ripped off Apple? The OS is a clone. They describe it as if they came up with the concept all by them selves. We'll see how vulnerable this OS will be to viruses and hacking.

The hardware looks cheap. And what's up with only 2 GB of internal memory included? I hope they're not gonna try to sell this thing for more than $80.

Why get a cheap copy when you can get the real thing?

Exactly. Apple products do have much higher satisfaction than wannabe products for some reason. Jeez, I wonder why.

You make absolutely no sense at all. TotalFinder is a 3rd party app to add tabs to Finder. So are you saying that this developer is "counterfeiting" a feature in OS X that does not exist?

LOL. I said no such thing.

If you notice Apple has a lot of overly loyal fans. In their eyes Apple can do no wrong. These fans would never rate anything Apple does negatively, even if Apple deserved it.

That's funny you mention that, I was going to say that it looks nearly identical to the Zune UI.
