Windows Phone 7 looks like a winner, I watched some of the demos. It is a new unique interface that does in fact makes the iPhone and Android look dated. Microsoft is really coming out swinging here.

You must have seen something I didn't. Maybe you meant you liked the "fade in" like a slideshow. How about those icons? Pretty darn close to iPhone. Should be called the Samsung iCopied.

You do realize the iPhone is purchased by people that aren't fanboys right ?
When you have millions of Apple fanboys talking as if everything Apple makes is the 2nd coming, no matter what, it doesn't matter how many non Mac users have the iphone, it will drive its ratings up. It's just an observation.

...So MS pimped out the UI...
Hear hear. There's plenty of 'cool' but meaningless animation as planes rotate and text flies around.

It reminded me of the early internet: Make it wobble, spin it around, flash it on and off! That'll grab their attention!

10 MONTH: they announced this 10 Month before launch! Are they desperate ?

it's seriously too confusing. You would need a manual at the begginning to understand how it work and where to go...

A 1 year old kid can use and have fun with an iphone, try to give that device with that os.. he'll smash it over his teddy bear in 1 sec :D

Fail.

When the iPhone was being announced, I thought "Good, Apple will do something unique in handheld UIs."

Instead, they put out a 1984 style icon grid, with a bunch of non-integrated standalone apps. Big whoop. All the other stuff was old hat to us enterprise touch screen folk. Granted, it's a good choice if you want to keep things super simple.

Since then, I've waited for someone to take a truly fresh approach. Palm and HTC started the idea of integrating all social pieces together, but didn't take it very far.

Now Microsoft steps with in a far younger generation of UI designers, who understand that a lot of people will want things grouped by social activity. It won't be the UI for everyone, not by a long shot, but at least it's truly innovative.

Apple cannot afford to do anything like this, because it doesn't hit as many tiers of users as they like. And frankly, I think Apple is stuck because Jobs had a hit with the original Mac and still thinks icon grids and single-tasking are sufficient.

I fought Microsoft most of my professional life. Unlike some of the loudmouth kids around here, I actually invested a lot of time and development and money in trying to create and boost competing products, probably while many were in diapers. But I have to admit, I'm pleasantly surprised that MS's old guys let go enough to let this kind of UI get attempted.

Well we can start by pointing out that you didn't see that Windows7 and Samsung bada are two separate operating systems.

If you notice Apple has a lot of overly loyal fans. In their eyes Apple can do no wrong. These fans would never rate anything Apple does negatively, even if Apple deserved it.

Same thing can be said for MS fan boys.

Ha! the same think popped up in mind. My 2 and 3 years old nieces are having fun with my iphone. They love the flip, pinch, and zoom features when they view pictures in my iphone.

It's definitely new, definitely interestingly graphical. Microsoft did come out swinging.

But most of the Fanboys aren't just looking at the word "Microsoft". For an average user, the Windows 7 phone's UI just doesn't work. My old parents and grandparents are using the iPhone nearly only for the internet, and it's very easy to learn to do so. Even calling with the iPhone, though the Contacts page is obviously not as cool as Window's version, it's much cleaner and easier to navigate.

The fact that the Windows phone has titlebars that are cut off and no indication of where you are in terms of sidescreens (at least Apple has dots to show which panel you're on), along with crazy detail even for a simple contacts page (imagine if you didn't have pictures of all your contacts and all their information = 50%+ of the population, all those features are blank and ugly), makes the UI incredibly difficult for the average Joe.

This phone seems to be marketed toward younger people who actually use technology for more than surfing the web and calling. And if so, they better have a good app department to support that.

The Windows Phone 7 Series interface looks cool, but what advantages does it have over iPhone?

Judging off of the current announcements it seems that:

Disadvantages or iPhone Equivalencies
-Has no multitasking
-Has no UI Customization
-No way to install apps outside of Microsoft channels (Like you could on WM6)
-Starting with 0 third party apps.

Advantages over iPhone
-Zune pass?
-XBox Live integration
-Cool interface
-Social networking integration

I'm basing most of this off of how the current announcements make no mention of it and how the Zune HD currently handles things. It could be different on the phone so I could be wrong, so either they are holding the pertinent info back or there is no info because it doesn't have those features.

The interface does look cool, but so far it looks like a glorified feature phone. I guess i'll have to wait till next month when they talk about development.

I like the glossy look they’ve invented for the UI, and the square icons with the lighter bar that sets the bottom row apart, almost like a kind of “dock” for important apps. Slick!

When Apple does wrong, I'm sure you'll hear about it. They haven't yet. Lots of reason for Apple fans to be loyal and confident, if it comes down to that. Apple's been riding high for years and there's no end in sight. The industry's best efforts so far, after over two years, still can't measure up. What does that tell you?

It tells me that when it comes to brand management, no one else can compare. I've read studies that show that Apple owners are far more willing to accept hardware/software shortcomings than PC owners.

Rationalize it however you want, Apple knows how to bring people in and keep them there (hint: it's not just hardware/software)

Turns out it was the best choice ever (still is.) Seems the doubters back then were completely out of touch.

Some of us fight Microsoft by not buying its stuff and helping others do the same.

But I have to admit, I'm pleasantly surprised that MS's old guys let go enough to let this kind of UI get attempted.

You can bet it gave them no small amount of pain. It's a bizarre world indeed where Microsoft is doing form-over-function and razzle-dazzle over substance while Apple is doing "staid" and "boring" (per some of the commentary on this thread).

And you can also be assured this is not the WinMo 7 that was in the works when the iPhone appeared.

My guess is that you will never see Apple do a wholesale GUI change. It will be more evolutionary, as needed. Also the iPad's GUI isn't going to determine wether its a revolutionary device, the apps will.

So, the app developers are the innovators and revolutionaries, not Apple?

If this is what you meant, then I agree. After all, it was the developers and the thousands of apps, not Apple, that made the iPhone such a success.

No it can't. Microsoft is a big company that people like to bash for many reasons. Being a passionate Windows fanboy would be like being an fanboy of something like Sprite. Apple has a niche markets. Niche markets develop a lot of fanboys. It turns into an us against them, while most Windows users are not even aware of Mac or any other type of competition. Not a lot of Windows fanboys because for that they need to be aware of the competition. I do see people defending Microsoft here, but that's mostly in response to FUD and exaggerations by Apple fanboys. On the internet I see a lot of Apple fanboys, and a lot of Apple fanboy haters.

So you list:

a) somewhat subjective minor UI gripes
b) multitasking (but apparently pandora is your real concern)
c) shared documents folder

Definitely sounds like a major overhaul. Just like Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. Definitely not just a feature update. Way more crazy.

LOL, who said Pandora is my main concern? I want true multitasking. Pandora is one of many reasons. And yeah, multitasking requires a major overhaul of the OS because it has to be re-written to allow it and the UI would change because you can't just use the home button to quit an app anymore.

BTW, I'm glad you feel they're minor UI gripes when this is a company that is all about finesse and the perfection of even the smallest minutia. The PNS is so broken it's like a few college kids wrote it.

How do you expect Apple to create a new UI if they can't even evolve from a minor UI change like changing the Aqua elements in 10.6 to this "flat metal look" you describe? The fact remains the same. The iPhone UI is dated and boring. Imagine the Windows Phone 7 Series UI on the iPad, now that would have made it "revolutionary". Instead we got the same old iPhone/iPod touch UI. Not very creative is it? Thank God for the ability to theme and use 3rd party software to change the UI in 10.6.

I am imagining an iPad with a WP7 Series interface and I am seeing...a ton of wasted screen real estate. There is no way that interface would work on anything bigger than a 4" touchscreen.

Did you watch the demo videos? From a design perspective the interface is cool, but Microsoft has definitely gone for form over function in this case. I mean seriously 1/4 of the vertical screen space in the menus is devoted to the chopped off title text, like in the 'Pictures' menu. In watching the menus look cool, but they are like webpages with giant header sections, yeah I want to know what site I am on but I'd rather see more content.

very nice - amazed Microsoft would even allow this to come out, guess the Zune people having their way... they finally have a design team.

Thats the point, apple has set up a great system in which they give the tools and framework to foster innovation. Part of that innovation is having a system built from to ground up to interact with humans in ways which we haven't before.

Seeing that is the future of computing, and enabling the masses to participate? THATS innovation.

Oh Microsoft...

Congratulations, Microsoft... you've copied all of Apple's OS breakthroughs and are now touting them as innovations. Quite pathetic, really.
