I couldn't agree more.

My God is that OS ever fugly!

At least Micro$ucks is consistent.

The worst part is if you actually go and watch the demo. It could be the biggest step backwards in design history. I look at the screens and it all feels like I am watching a confusing intro. Then when the show a photo, it's crammed up top, rather than filling the screen.

At least Microshaft is consistent in their crappery.
The Samsung is great looking, but we all know there will be no application support, so it's a dead end.

The problem is there that this wouldn’t pass Apple’s nor Palm’s user friendliness tests. I bet Steve would smash it against the wall while the RnD employees would be staring at the smashed device with disbelief.

Its early days of course, but i think it looks pretty nice. I will certainly consider it if it makes it out in the UK when i replace my 3G.

I dont really care too much about the Apps from a personal point of view, i use my phone as a phone and a web browser and e-mail mostly.

If this device does it nicely i might just think about it.

However hopefully the next iphone will be a vast improvement and hook me in again.

---a side note

its impossible to have reasoned discussion on here as most posters are so blinded by fanboyism their opinion is instantly ignored by a great deal of other posters.

I also find it very amusing when people write Microsoft as Micro$oft, or M$..... As if Apple dont rip off with over-priced products and make shed loads of money.

Quite pathetic really when you think about it.

Not this time. This time even fanboys are right ;)

Unless they're not...?

I'm new to the site so I truly don't know, but do you really have to resort to bashing anything that's not Apple on this site to get any respect or be taken seriously? I joined simply looking for some information on iPad...?

It's more like a bunch of frat guys beating with a bat anyone who doesn't know the 'secret word'.

I'm new to Mac and Apple and Mac OS X. My iMac i7 arrived just two days ago. This is my first Apple product. That is my honest opinion - this Windows Phone OS 7 really sucks.

Welcome to MacRumors. I too am a happy Mac user, but I do not drink the 'Kool Aid' so to speak. Apple is anything from perfect regardless of what some of the users here believe. Don't let them get to you.
:D

So I've watched a few WPS7 videos several times now. I'm not quite clear on why this is supposed to be better than iPhone? The page layouts look "cool," I guess (in the same way that Wired's page layout is "cool" compared to Time, I supposed), but not entirely practical. It seems information density is pretty low (if you have lots of contacts, pictures, or, probably, apps, it looks like you will see very few of them on-screen at any given time, requiring lots of swipes/taps). Organization by data instead of app is interesting. It remains to be seen whether it's practical, but let's give 'em the benefit of the doubt. So what is it about this thing that people think is better than iPhone? Is it just the giant fonts, light on dark color scheme, and all-lower-case motif? Because it seems to me that primarily it's just "different," not at all "better," and, if that's true, it will be very difficult for MS to gain any traction with ODM/OEMs that have already jumped ship to the Android bandwagon.

I love the typography, but that's just my preference. It's definitely just different (not necessarily worse or better) - like you mentioned. We'll find out all that after it's actually released.

As for Microsoft and manufacturers: Microsoft will handle that the same way it handles everything else... with lots of money. Look at all the exclusives on the Xbox 360 (especially downloadable content). Microsoft paid good money for those.

You, sir, of all people should know that something doesn't have to be "better", just "different" :)

There are so many different types of users in the world, there cannot be any single UI that's the "best". And certainly simple app icon grids have been done for decades, so anything newer is refreshing.

The WP7 UI doesn't appeal to me that much, but around the 'net it seems that there are a LOT of people who are very attracted to it. Some people are content oriented, not individual action oriented.

I do like the concept of all photos from everywhere being together, and of all music (including Pandora) together.

Demo was enough for me, of course I will give it a chance later. Oh, wait a second... I get it. Now that I have Mac (I don't have iPhone though) I'm somehow biased?

Sorry, but you are the one who's lost any credebility.

I also find it very amusing when people write Microsoft as Micro$oft, or M$..... As if Apple dont rip off with over-priced products and make shed loads of money.

When I worked for a major graphical chip company, I had a conversation about why everybody hates M$ (yes, in the industry): the problem with "This company, yeah!" is not that they want to earn money - it is normal for a business. The problem is that they want to earn ALL the money.

And when you see SJ, you see a man, who has a vision - he knows what he wants the future to look like, and he wants the Apple to provide this future.

When you see SB, or BG, you see people who want the Microsoft to be everywhere. And that's it. They do not have any particular vision. They just slap together anything that seems to help them reach their target - be the biggest, the richest.

I do think the UI shown is a quick'n'dirty hack to show something different.
Because, if you dig deeper, all media from "everywhere being together" is nice as long as you look/listen/watch it - and only it. As soon as you wish to post a comment for a photo on a facebook, or even post one photo to FB, another one to Picasa, you have a problem. One big usability and extensibility problem.

Even if you can invent some interface which will wrap all existing social sites with one uniform interface, you can't do anything in a case some bright head invents new social site which will not fit your model.

Apple approach with dedicated apps are much more robust and future-proof.

The point being made is to look at the pattern and it is pretty clear that iPhone OS 4.0 will not be that impressive. It to stop counting on 4.0 to be some end all thing but release it will be catch up items or not impressive at all items.

I am getting tired of people saying iPhone 4.0 OS will be so GREAT and Grand (or even 4th gen iPhone for that matter) it will just be more catch up or minor updates.

Playing catch up?
i guess you are a little bit out of the market
the i phone is the best selling device
other are playing catch up
iphone for now is leading
and sincerely for what i see with win7 is gonna be leading for a while
unless you like cut words and having to scroll everywhere to just understand what is goijng on...
what a joke

If there's a major difference between 3 and 4 wheels, then yes.

The point is this - each major version number has had major differences from the prior. One would therefore expect that 4.0 will contain many differences from 3.2.

Further, I don't accept the premise that crap like MMS should have been there from the start - I still have not met anyone AFK who has ever used MMS.

My point was that the "major upgrade" were essential missing features that should have been there from the start.

What are you smoking.

The iPhone is not the best selling device. In the US where it is doing the best it is currently in 2nd place to Blackberry curve. Blackberry curve is currently number 1 for best selling smart phone in the US. Rest of the world iPhone does not do as well.

You still turning a blind eye to the catch up items.

MMS- catch up items (everyone but the iphone had it)
Copy/Paste - It was a catch up item that should of been there before hand
Video - Catch up item that should of been on the phone on day 1.

List goes one. The iPhone was missing a lot of features and still missing quite a few features that other have.

My point was that the "major upgrade" were essential missing features that should have been there from the start.

In any event, it didn't "work" on me - I have owned every iPhone since 1.0. Each update has been good for me, but I was perfectly happy with the original iphone after the appstore got turned on. The updates didn't "trick me" into buying the next phone.

Your point, in any event, makes no sense. Even supposing nothing that shouldn't have been there in the first place was added, I repeat - each update has represented major changes from the previous version. And 4.0 will represent major changes from the previous version.

That leaves 2 possibilities:

1) your world-view is right, and 4.0 will simply add things that should have been there already. (You'll doubtless say that ANYTHING they add should have been there already, even though the market clearly disagrees with you, but I digress). You probably think that all iPhone owners are weeping in frustration at lack of multitasking, a "today screen" and the ability to skin springboard. Whatever.

2) stuff that shouldn't have been there already is added.

If (2) is the case, iPhone will maintain its lead over the competition.

If (1) is the case, iPhone will still maintain its lead over the competition while simultaneously making enough changes to keep fickle folks feeling that things are fresh and new.

The only way Apple loses is if 4.0 doesn't have big changes, and my repeated point, denied by no one so far, is that each major version number has represented big changes.

And when you see SJ, you see a man, who has a vision - he knows what he wants the future to look like, and he wants the Apple to provide this future.

Oh for goodness' sake :) Jobs is not a saint. He's a salesman. He wants Apple to provide, control and make money from the innovations he chooses to allow to dribble out a bit at a time.

Even if you can invent some interface which will wrap all existing social sites with one uniform interface, you can't do anything in a case some bright head invents new social site which will not fit your model.

I recall a Microsoft patent application last year dealing with this, plus they've talked about it a bit already. Third party apps will be able to register both as information providers and consumers. They'll also be able to have their own interactively updated tile.

I am both different and better.

Touché !

#1 Rule of GUI Programming.

The less clicks/taps the better.

#2 Rule of GUI Programming.

A feature is useless unless it can be found and utilized easily.

Now saying apple playing catch up for mms or copy and paste is just plain ridiculous, sorry
apple had the multitouch tech that no other phone has
so they are playing catch up
yes the iphone when it came out was far from perfect, in fact it was the first phone device from apple
and i actually bought it only few months ago, since i waited for the copy and paste which i cant believe it was not since beginning
but those a re just minor tweak,
there are some feat i really would like, like multitasking or the damn way to just drag a pdf document inside and being able to read it
or just a better search engine
but i can definitely live wout,
the app store and all the apps are something every other phone can just dream about
and goodluck on using all the apps in the blackberry...
where frozen happens...
great experience surfing the web w the blackberry...pathetic...
iphone is stable, never gets stuck
only real problem for iphone is ATT
if iphone were free from att it would sell much much more
but that is a wrong marketing decision by apple, not a catch up
