What are these mythical i/O devices you speak of? I've not plugged anything into my laptop for years apart from a USB / Thunderbolt Hard drive and they certainly are not USB1!

My iphone and ios devices if I want to update them without a (risky) OTA update and/or if I want to recover them. Which I can't do without a dongle.

5 hour battery life in reality.

No Apple display so the simplicity of the ecosystem is gone. The complexity is back. What types of connectors, USB and thunderbolt versions, etc. and that ugly as sin lg display shows Apple doesn't understand their core anymore

Usery pricing on dongles.

The list goes on and on.

Underpowered USB-c ports, is it the left side or side side? Again, complexity is back.

No optical audio?

My hope is they are just lying, and the future in their mind is iPhone and a payment and health hub. Because is Apple is still serious about the mac, they've completely lost their way.

This article is basically a Trump speech...

BLAH BLAH BLAH - I SAY THIS AND IT'S TRUE. WILL I BACK IT UP OR SHOW ANY PROOF OR FIGURES! NO. YOU WILL JUST BELIEVE ME. BLAH BLAH BLAH

The Surface Book is the perfect notebook form but it isn't implemented brilliantly by Microsoft. I think Apple could compete in the future but only when they move to ARM.

Apple is the bus.
Tim, the driver.
Customers are the little kindergarten kids inside.

Cook now has us over the edge of a cliff and tilting back and forth.
We are all screaming and crapping ourselves.
We are telling him to go in reverse, but he's got his foot down on the gas, hoping the wheels gain a bit more traction.

And he is jumping out the rear door every so often to dance on Ellen.

Never thought I would say this but I think this time M$ might actually be doing a good job or at least they are heading in the right direction.
I was always on Apple's side until now. The new MBP is pure insult and everything Apple is doing right now is pure disappointment. There is literally nothing coming out of Apple that one can label as innovative. rMBP in 2012 was great machine and it was the one I'm still using now. nMP was great (even with the "limitations" ie. no dual CPU etc.).
After that? not much. Apple watch is still missing the killer feature, ACD were abandonded, mac mini is collecting dust, iPhone 7 is just faster but not much offering so I'll keep my iPhone 6 and iMac is collecting dust also.
Yet, their laptop line is a total mess. 17" MBP got killed, Aperture got killed etc.

So now, Apple seems to be focused only one one group - toy products for facebook users. If this trend continues then I will switch to another brand and will probably start using Linux. (I use it at work anyway so won't be a massive problem)

I hope Apple will wake up and will get back on the track as right now, they just produce expensive toys without the consistency of what they once stood for (beautiful and useful products - one can't even buy apple screen to compliment nMP, MBP or even mac mini - I don't understand this)

Thank you Apple, but for now you will not have me as a customer. I want better value and products than what you are offering now.

I think Apple could be in the process of losing its way. I don't think it has totally lost its way yet, but I think it's headed that way.

I never had an appreciation for how much Steve Jobs apparently kept Jony Ive's "genius" in check until the last year or two. It seems that Jony has a lot more leeway now (or perhaps people around him now are afraid to tell him "no" like Jobs probably did). The result is that the obsession with thinness has run amuck and function seems to have taken a backseat to form.

Yeah, because everything Steve Jobs did was perfect. Like....

- the cube
- ping
- releasing an iPhone that lost its signal when you held it
- Apple 3
- The Lisa

1. LG Screen is actually VERY good looking in real life and is a pro screen.
2. Dongles are not needed - just get ne cables
3. USB-C is not Apple's it's what EVERYONE should be using.

I wonder if this is just Microsoft using disappointment as a means to a) attempt to instill doubt in perspective Apple customers and b) promote the Surface as a "better experience".. typical marketing garbage. I refuse to believe that a high number of MacBook users are actually switching to the Surface without some facts/numbers.. that don't come from Microsoft.

Sounds like desperation from Microsoft to me.

Anytime you need to compare yourself to the competition you are already behind.
To take this to another level, please tell me"
Who is ahead Chevrolet or Ford
BMW or Mercedes or Porsche
etc
etc
etc

Isn't that what advertising is really all about? Why you are better than the other choice/s?
Sorry, in my book your statement fails the logic test.

There will always be a dongle problem. USB-A is not going to disappear for years because for many low IO devices there simply is no benefit to change to USB-C. And as an academic, I can tell you that I have NEVER been to a conference where the expected input for the projector system was not VGA. For the past 10 years, I've had to travel with a variety of different XXX > VGA adapters. USB-C on the MB and MBPro means I have to buy yet ANOTHER one, but also a dongle for an SD card reader (currently built in in all my other Apple devices), and a USBC > A adapter for a clicker. So, not exactly impossible, but annoying nonetheless.

I can't ever see projectors becoming USB-C as standard unless there is a way to upscale to USB-C from an inferior output source (e.g. DVI, miniDP or VGA).
This dongle ******** is getting out of hand. Just buy a proper dock and you don't need anything else. YouTubers are just fishing for views and playing stupid by connecting 20 dongles to each other to make a clickbait thumbnail for their video. 1 dock station can give you SD reader, USB-C + USB-A, Ehternet, HDMI and more. There are pretty much no laptops with VGA anymore so I don't understand your point.

Consider this, in round number Apple generated about $46 billion in revenue last quarter. Of that, about $5 billion came from Mac sales and $32 billion from iPhone and iPad (IOS), the remainder from other products/services.

Maybe Apple has simply become a phone/tablet company since only about 11% of their entire revenue comes from computers.

iCloud backup anyway - multiple backups.
Never had an OTA issue.
USB-C>Lightning cables exist - and are cheap - OEM Belkin / Anker etc are less than $£10

You can do it without a dongle, just get the correct cable instead

Unfortunately their disappointment with the Surface Pro 4 will send them right back next year. I own an SP4 as a secondary machine and the hardware is great - the keyboard/trackpad are one of the best I have used on such a small laptop/tablet. The problem is the battery life is wildly unpredictable and I have had so many issues with just freezing, losing inputs and randomly restarting for updates that I don't feel like I can rely on the thing. The other problem, it really isn't great as a tablet, at least not compared to an iPad.

Yup. That's exactly why I didn't get one. I spent a lot of time playing with one on multiple visits to the store. Just not as refined as my MacBook Pro. It's a shame Apple had to cripple the newest iterations. I'm not yet ready to upgrade, but hopefully when I am either the world will have shifted entirely to USB C or Apple will have made some "compromises."

Have you seen their stores recently. That is EXACTLY what their turning into. They have more space for Apple Watches than MacBook Pro's.

I've been saying this for a while now about Apple. It's time for Tim to go and time to revamp Apple.
Agreed. Tim did what he was supposed to do. He was to steady the ship as a bridge from Steve to the next visionary. Job done. Thanks Tim. Bye Tim.

Yep....the grass is always greener until you actually have to use Windows 10 for a bit.

Window 8 and 8.1 were bad and horrible but 10 is really good with usability. The thing is that Windows 10 is ready and used with pen/stylus. You can't do that with OSX (Macos) without doing huge overhaul to UI. Thats one big reason Apple put the touch bar instead of touch screen.

If you don't mind, I expect two flagship devices to connect seamlessly without having to resort to any manufacturer. As of today, iOS devices can't connect to the new MBP without having to buy an external dongle. This is unacceptable. The fact that you never had an OTA issue is superfluous. Other people had it, and I don't want to risk it. I just want to connect the two most important devices, is it that much to ask to Apple, the company that prided itself in simplicity?
