And yet, at my job we run several windows 8.1 machines still, a majority of windows 10 machines, and 2 windows 11. Most people will take arm on windows seriously when Microsoft and intel finally ditch x86. Till then, arm on windows is like apple selling the Apple TV, just a side hobby
MS would love to ditch x86 I reckon. You think they actually want to support and be hampered by all that legacy crap in the enterprise/business world?

Microsoft does not make 90% of their money from cell phones.
Apple makes about 50% of their money from cell phones, not 90%. And they don't use The M2 ultra chips in cell phones. It is fair to point out that you can't use an AMD or Nvidia GPU with Apple's desktops though.

You got MY attention Microsoft! Can you load up the demo project for Final Cut Pro and let me know how fast that renders?

Oh, still only Windows?

Then, how does this comparison help anyone? Exactly? How much faster are you than your real competition, Intel or AMD? Oh, and how compatible, that would also be important. Unless those comparisons would not show you in a good light, of course. :)
As if Final Cut is the only video editing software on the planet! It will actually be interesting to see this comparison using DaVinci Resolve, Adobe, CapCut, and others.

At Microshaft we are two times faster at sending all your data to the Department of Defense. You have nothing to worry about plebs. Just don’t step out of line and threaten to eat the rich okay? We eat you. That’s the only eating allowed.
lol - “Apple, the company for the non-affluent masses”

Also, Newsflash: all companies will provide your data to the DOD with a valid subpoena.

If you're using it in a setting where auto update can interrupt work (computers used once a week in church tech booths are good examples), it does matter to tweak the settings on Mac, too.
I understand how it works. Sometimes my Mac alerts me that it is ready to update. I let it update or I tell it now is not a good time. I’ve never set it to give me a choice because that default setting is just common sense.

I think it is time for Apple to realize they are the only ones continuing to draw a line between iPads with M-series chips and Macs, and it's a razor-thin line many can see through. There is not much of a reason that a hybrid version of the OS can't exist. It might be oversimplifying, but when it comes down to it iPadOS and macOS are both BSD Unix (Darwin) and share a lot of the same layers of architecture and frameworks...

LOL, you make it sound like Apple spent 5 years doing nothing -- when in reality they have been releasing multiple iterations of a few highly successful products you might have heard of like AirPods, Apple Watch and this little thing called the iPhone.

Reality check: the Mac and iPad that they're supposedly neglecting add up to less than 15% of Apple's revenue. I love Macs too, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking they're Apple's bread and butter these days.

Also keep in mind, with that 15% share in revenue—Apple makes much more money selling Macs, in raw billions, than they ever have—whether it's Jobs and Woz, after they got rid of Jobs, and even after he returned until his death.

They diversified as a corporation. Jobs hired Cook. Jobs chose Cook to succeed him. Cook will probably retire in three years or so. Life goes on.

This isn't true. The mouse existed before Xerox, it was created at SRI. Also as far as Apple and Xerox go Apple was allowed to "take what they wanted" in exchange for massive mounts of shares which they did.
Jobs was allowed to look at Xerox park labs. Xerox invented several things Steve new they didn’t have a clue. And exchange for stock prior to the IPO he was allowed to look he didn’t steal anything.

well, competition is a good thing, but the "average" customer doesn't care about cinebencz benchmarks.
More interesting, they either sell online, or like at Best Buy right next to any x86 Windows computer, so that will be their main "competition"... and it's running WinARM, so no x86 compatibility, which might not matter to non-enterprise users
WinARM actually has pretty robust x86 and x64 emulation. Not as good as Rosetta 2, but good enough for the vast majority of people.

Compared to the 15-inch MacBook Air with 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, the Surface Pro and other Copilot+ PCs with 12-core and 10-core processors offer 58 percent better sustained multithreaded performance (based on Cinebench benchmarks)………..Windows PCs have struggled to keep up with Apple silicon in recent years, but it appears that Qualcomm's technology is catching up.
58% better is not “catching up”, it’s a blowing it out of the water event

There used to be competition, but pretty much everyone has decided on either Windows/Android or Mac OS/iOS. Yes there are switchers, but instead of copying, spend some money on innovation.

Snapdragon X Elite is slower than M3 in both single-core CPU and GPU. It also has worse thermal performance according to this PDF.

This is what I was going to post. Thank you for sharing. Microsoft is cherry picking the benchmarks and stats here. The Snapdragon Elite is not faster. Who uses a consumer laptop like MacBook Air or Surface Pro for “sustained multi core” processing. This machines are used primarily for single core tasks. Nobody is rendering a 3D animation on these or trying to solve large mathematical models. They are doing web browsing, email, word processing, spreadsheets and light photo and video editing. More cores will help concurrent processing but that’s just brute forcing the performance. I am sure they put a bigger battery too to get the battery life numbers since Snapdragon Elite consumes more power than M3 in its 23W configuration.

anyway, comparing multicore performance on machines like this while ignoring single core and graphics is like touting that a Toyota Camry outperforms a Honda Accord in off-road driving.

Really interested to see how it achieves that battery life.
I looked into the specs so far and the Surface Pro 13" has a very similar battery capacity as the 13" MBA M3.
The web browsing battery life is rated the same as the mac at 14-15 hours. But the surprising 22 hours of video playback is ridiculous.

I wonder why. If the battery capacity is similar then this leaves 3 things:

1. The Snapdragon Elite X's cores run at a more efficient wattage when almost idle than the M3. This might be the reason why it achieves lower single core score. It might be running at a lower frequency range than the M3, hence being more efficient on the lower end. The result is a lower single core score overall so they compensated by putting in 4 more cores in order to have a better multicore score than M3.
This also results in a poorer thermal performance because they have more cores and they use more energy combined to generate more processing power than M3 (the thermal performance assumption might be wrong though as I haven't read them in detail yet).

2. The OLED screen is the sole efficiency boost. Draining less power per nit than the ancient LCD screen on the MBA.

3. Microsoft's metric in measuring battery life is different than Apple's. So they achieved this rating with a different test parameters than Apple's.

Or it might be a combination of all the above. We will know more once people start testing it and measure power draw at each performance scales.

Also it is interesting that the dedicated NPU from Qualcomm achieves 45 TOPS. I remembered some users said that microsoft said that 40+ TOPS is the starting point of true AI PCs. So they opted for that specific Qualcomm NPU chip. Interesting how Apple did not decided to one up this by having M4 already beating this TOPS score. But then again A18 is rumored to have twice the NPU cores.

I am team Apple and I want Apple to remain good/same values and competitive so I am not eventually forced to use Windows/Android again in my life time.

Well Apple better blow us away with next Mac OS and the much hyped AI capabilities. Bit of competition is good.

I have real difficulties to justify purchasing a new iPad Pro / Air or a the MacBook Pro (now that iPad is M4) or MacBook Air all at premium price … But like when Apple was on PowerPC ibm processor over the speedy intel, and that MS offer a combination of speed price and touch screen with common sense features like 2 usb c for the Surface pro, I am wondering if … and this is how MS is now most valuable company in the world and Tim Cook sink instead of fly high with his multi billion spaceship …

It's not a like for like comparison though. As many have pointed out, the 10 or 12 cores in the Snapdragon are all full power/performance cores. Compared to the M3's 8 cores being made up of 4 Performance and 4 Efficiency cores, you would expect a significant speed up. Qualcomm didn't compare the chips to the Pro or Max chips though... But based on Geekbench results, they line up the M2 Pro and M2 Max pretty well... Certainly not a bad first outing.

Apple has an edge for now, but it is good to see some competition.
