Of course they do. They crash, get viruses, and have the most obnoxious notification system on earth.

My mac doesn't do any of that :/

Must be different than mine then, this happened when i changed my apple id password the other day:

OSX: please re-enter your password for your icloud account

Me: (chooses Later)

1 second later

OSX: please-re enter your password for your icloud account

rinse and repeat about 10 times before it finally gave up

It is weird someone would use such anti-intuitive OS as Windows with awesome alternatives like the Mac. Even more, Mac OS X is free for everyone. Clearly, it is inertia (as was with DOS vs Mac). Once you try Mac, you never go back!

Mac OS X is not free for everyone. you get it with your Mac. you know what OSX does if it detects its not running on mac hardware? it refuses to boot. also funny detail, in the Mac firmware, Apple has left a message for hackers pleading with them not to steal OSX. which is also the message OSX uses to detect if its running on a real mac

Yet they sell a detachable keyboard for the iPad Pro. Go figure.
And for every other iPad. I have an iPad dock from Apple for iPad 1 and iPad 2 (2011 model). It was pretty novel but not really useful because I so quickly got exhausted having to put my finger on the vertical screen.

They always, consistently, every time, fail to take off. The iPad Pro's keyboard doesn't seem to be taking off either, and that's not just because it's mushy as sin. This whole "touch screen + keyboard" is a dead fish. It always has been, it always will be. We even had the whole convertible thing like the YogaPad and whatnot, and that failed, too.

-One great shortcut is Win+ < or > if you use two monitors, or a Cintiq and one monitor.
What does that do then?

-Cortana is pretty useful, using the calendar, the ability to say "Ok certain,..." it has been working better than Siri for me.

Okay, sounds quite nice.

-Some transfer files from one place to another is great.

What do you mean?

-To be able to put Dropbox on a different hard drive, not just the root one.

Hmm… I don't have Dropbox on the root hard drive in OS X on one one of the Macs I use.

-Touch screen on the Surface Pro. Through my workflow I need to leave notes on PDF. I just like to draw or sketch on the screen (On the mac, I would print the pdf page and put note with a pencil).

Okay. Sounds good.

...but I miss the "Hide others" on the Mac. Even so on Windows you can grab the top of any windows and shake it and it would do something similar.

Yeah, a bit more clumsy though.

Not to mention how awesome Windows snap is. I have to admit, I love my mac, everything about it. But windows snap is such a useful feature it drives me nuts that Apple doesn't do something like that. I know they do split on fullscreen, but it takes on average 10 seconds to do so and way too many steps–make window fullscreen, wait for animation; swipe for mission control, drag another window to the new fullscreen window. Wait until the animation finishes. Swipe to go to the new space. With windows, it's drag title bar to side, click next window, done. Less than 2 seconds. You can also resize one window and the other resizes it–I know mac snap windows do the same. Unsnap the window and it takes back it's original size.

I know there are thirdparty components to do that on a mac, but they are unfinished. You can't resize windows after they are snapped and have the other half resize with it.

Definitely A+ for that in Win10 for sure. Well designed and works extremely well.

I agree the implementation of this is clumsy in OS X. Better in Windows for sure. Not that it's a feature I feel I need very often. I'd even say say it's quite rare. It really seems that people have different workflows, and the two OS's have small things here and there that suit some ways of working better. To me there are (so far) more stuff overall that makes my workflow better in OS X.

I burn hundreds of blu-rays a year. I'm handed burned blu-rays all the time. I am a filmmaker. 75% of film festivals screen off of blu-rays. When I bought my last desktop years and years ago, you couldn't even buy an external BluRay burner, so I went with an HP desktop with an internal blu burner. As my filmmaking got more demanded, I've upgraded every bit of that PC. Have never needed to buy a new desktop. Going stronger than ever and my upgrades hurt less because they were spread out.

I understand it was a long time ago you was in need, but internal LG Blu-ray ROM (so nu burning) in a Mac Pro from 2010 here. Works fine. You should be able use a Blu-ray burner in OS X too, though.

”In a Mac OS environment, Finder can be used to read and write to BDXL, Blu-ray, DVD and CD media, and DVD Player can play back DVD movies. Blu-ray playback requires additional software (not included). Of course other Mac software that supports optical drives can access the BDR-XD05W also.”

The computer is still quick by today's standards with OS X on a SSD, upgraded RAM and a GTX 970 graphics card with 4 GB VRAM.

Your Mac doesn't crash? What are you running - Snow Leopard??

My Macs do crash and I do get kernel panics...
I ended up swapping out my HTPC Mini for an old PC that i upgraded to W10 and it's never crashed, I certainly can't say the same for the Mini.

Just saying...

I've never gotten exhausted using a keyboard with a touchscreen, but everyone is different.

I have Windows 10 on a laptop and I will say that it has been just fine. Apples crash too and I have seen it, even during a studion recording gig, so you Mac people can't fool me.

My feeling is that I want to be OS flexible. I have three iOS devices and am thinking of getting another.

But I will also say that Apple has been falling down and failing power users such as myself. Just look at my sigature for a few of the issues I have with Apple. And to make matters worse, Siri keeps getting dumber and more helpless every time I upgrade my iPhone's OS. I have an iPhone, for crying out loud, so why do I constantly have to keep using the Google assistant if I want to get anything done?

I generally think of people here as being intelligent and well-meaning. But to make fun of Microsoft right now, when there is no way to add memory at a later date, and no way to increase internal hard drive or SSD space to an MBP even if I wanted to, well; that just shouts fanboyism to me.

Apple needs to do better for power users. A lot better. My next laptop will very likely be a Windows machine and not a Mac Book Pro because some PC makers will allow me to get a 17" touchscreen laptop and some makers will allow me to put 5 TB of drive space internally into them, include an internal DVD burner, or upgrade the memory later. Some will even allow me to do all of these things.

Currently, none of those makers are from Cupertino and none of them have the word "Apple" in their names.

Good points. To me an iMac where you could change the HDD and add an external GPU would be something I would buy immediately. I hope they at least allow the external GPU we have been seeing on some machines. And just have 256SSD storage and I could manage with that with external HDD's. the rMBP is annoying to a degree since you can't upgrade anything. Like yourself I dig the 17" laptops where you can easily get to the HDD and RAM in need be, bottom panel access not that remove the keyboard crap.

My issue with MS isn't from past experiences. Overall they have been fine with me since XP etc.. Even Vista wasn't an issue for me. I do not like the windows as a service nonsense. Let me pay company X amount of $$$ and don't do any telemetry crap and make the OS stay out of the way. No automatic drivers either since I like to check those. I know the world is all about ads and free software but without that option win10 is a no go for me until that is addressed. If not and Apple doesn't work for me one day then hopefully another OS fits the needs for myself. Again, I would PAY MS not to have it. I would pay 100 a year as long as things were solid, keep that current generation crap far away from me as possible.

Siri actually works for me quite well, the google assistant was a little worse from my experience. Have not tried cortana. Guessing it's a YMMV thing. Even the iCloud stuff never has given me major issues. Just minor lag here and there. Onedrive on the Xbox was fine when I used that as well. Probably just because everyone does things a little different and all the variables just have issues crop up.

It's fun to make fun of MS, Apple and Google. They make billions upon billions; we can talk some smack. There is not one product from the lot of them that I wouldn't find plenty of negatives to chime in about. Some do act as if things are perfect from one of three companies, which tells me they just ignore issues when they arise for whatever reason. Lying perhaps, an all too common human trait. Maybe trolling who knows. I enjoy to mess around on occasion myself. This site, on the latter pages of a thread become very anti-apple, so I kind of like to go the other way just for the fun of it.

Exactly right about it being fun to harp on these companies. I like what I like. Apple for mobile and watch, Windows for computing, Sony for gaming (not X-Box).

They all have ups and downs.

Windows as a service isn't awesome, but Apple's push of services within iOS isn't awesome either. And both companies kind of suck at executing their services!

I am puzzled. Does Microsoft consider Macs as a dangerous competitor? You know, Macs were like 10% of total PC sales.

I don't think so. Maybe a few years ago, MS considered the iPad a threat, but probably not any more, at least not at the moment. Five years from now, who knows?

Mac OS X IS free, the warning is not because you get a free license, the warning is there because the EULA states that Mac OS X must be run ONLY on a Mac hardware.

The other three ads highlight individual Windows 10 PC features, including Cortana, Inking, and Hello. Each 15-second spot deliberately mentions how "even the new Macs don't have that" or "Mac doesn't have a touchscreen."

"Windows 10 and Cortana" demonstrates how Microsoft's personal voice assistant can be used on the desktop to find any file by simply asking. The advantage will be short-lived, however, as Siri is reportedly coming to OS X 10.12 later this year.

"Windows 10 and Inking" shows how select Windows 10 PCs have touchscreens that allow you to write and sketch directly on the screen, unlike Macs. Meanwhile, Apple has previously admitted it has no plans to release a touchscreen Mac.

"Windows 10 and Hello" shows one of the ladies unlocking her PC with facial recognition, using the front-facing camera, with no password required. The biometric feature works with your face, fingerprint, or iris on select PCs.

The latest data from market research firm Gartner revealed that worldwide PC shipments from Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus, and Acer continued to decline in the fourth quarter. Apple was the sole manufacturer that saw positive shipment growth in the quarter, based on sales of 5.7 million Macs.

Most of Apple's Mac lineup is due for a hardware refresh this year with Intel's Skylake chips, Thunderbolt 3 with USB-C, and possibly new form factors. The new Macs could be announced at WWDC in June or at a media event later this fall, although updates could also be announced via press release at any time.

Article Link: Microsoft Says Windows 10 PCs 'Do More' Than Macs in Latest Ads

1. Touchscreens are a less sophisticated interface for people who grew up handwriting first, in other words, born pre 1976. Most people under 40, myself included, prefer typing to mere scribbling.
2. Voice search can be annoying and next to useless, especially in countries which speak faster than America does.
3. Biometrics are the worst password types of all, as they can't be revoked or changed, leaving you vulnerable to being forced to unlock.

I don't see the ads as a mistake. Just as in politics, the underdog bites the front-runner. In 1997, Apple ads were biting at the heels of Pentium processor PCs. Now, as only Apple home computer sales are growing, Microsoft is biting at non-touch-screen Macs. Also as in politics, 80% of folks are dead set on their platform, and will never change. All these anti-other-platform campaigns have the possibility of switching 20% of home PC uses, and if the manage to switch 10%, it would be considered a major success.

The vast majority of PC users have two reasons to totally reject Mac, no matter what the ads show: Games (12-30 year-olds) and "everybody at work uses PC" (25-60 year-olds). If Apple wants to capture the 12-30 year-old game enthusiast market, they must make a 13-15 inch Mac that has humongous graphics and sells for under $800. I dare say Apple will never consider that tack.

As to the double meaning of bugs, I don't see Windows 10 as being buggy. I see it as being drastically different from Windows 7 and for no good reason. Users don't like huge changes, especially if they don't see the point. The undesirable aspects were intentional engineering changes, not bugs. Microsoft needs to stop turning over their own apple cart (no pun intended) and stick to a plan to gradually wean users away from clicking Start to stop the computer. Ever since Vista, MS has been struggling to carve a path to the next big OS design. With the eons-long development of Vista, MS didn't even consult top PC makers to see what they thought about the possibility of dropping BIOS for EFI boot. They simply sprang it on the hardware makers, and the makers kicked back with both boots. That forced MS to ease off and offer the dual option of BIOS or EFI boot for Windows 8. Now many PC makers are finally getting on the EFI band-wagon. In a few years, there will be very little difference between Mac and PC. No wonder apple has dropped the word "Mac" from their operating system name.

Its like people who fight for a living.... Apple and MS gotta put on a great show for the public, but in secret their really hugging each other... particularly round xmas time :D

Then next year its "ok... better get back to work"

1. I know how to write in cursive (handwriting), but I still prefer typing than using touching the screen.
2. A good 20 percent of the time Sirii doesn't get it write the first time (or at all), which is annoying.
3. Biometrics is only dangerous if there isn't other security measures. Take the iphone for example, if there were only one way a person could access the phone that being the fingerprint then there would be big problems. I could see some people walking around with a missing finger (or two).

The 2016 models will have thunderbolt 3/USB C ports which do allow for external GPUs, along with 40GB/s transfer speeds. We are currently seeing the previous rMBP/MBA models now supported with SSD upgrades for 2013,2014&2015 models.

I used Windows for most of my life, ever since booting up 3.1 in DOS, and they have had some good operating systems. Aside from the data mining, lack of control over things like updates, and the usual Windows abundance of viruses or malware, I think Windows 10 is a decent OS. Maybe not quite as good as 7 was, but still solid.

However I switched to OSX when I bought my MacBook Pro back in 2011 and haven't looked back. It has been by far the most reliable computer I've ever had, and I appreciate getting a steady stream of OS updates every year. I'm currently running Mavericks but now that I upgraded my RAM the other day I think I'll upgrade to El Capitan. Thankfully I can do such updates when I'm ready without being hounded constantly by Apple to move to the newest OS like Microsoft has done to Win7/8 users.

I also love that I don't need resource-hogging antivirus software running 24/7 trying to protect my computer from relentless malware. I installed an antivirus last summer and ran it just for fun to see if anything made it on to my system over the first few years of ownership and it didn't find a single thing.

I've been trying to convert my parents to Mac ownership for years now, but they seem fine with buying a new $500 Windows laptop every couple of years because the ones they have bog themselves into paperweights no matter how careful they are. I've had my MBP almost five years now and it's showing so signs of letting me down yet.

They can talk the talk but not walk the walk, Microsoft. As my friend used to put it: "All mouth and trousers"
