Well, the difference is that I can pick up a CD with 13 songs on it on Amazon for $2.68. The point isn't that music is free, or should be free, it's the comparison the ad makes - which is erroneous. It's like comparing my Corolla to a half-track and passing it off as a reasonable simile.

I am sure a short advert should go into every single possible method of purchasing music to sync to a digital media player. They better cover everything, including visiting cousin bobs garage sale to purchase an album from 1965, then going online to get the adapters needed to sample the product. Never mind that 8track rastafarian compilation you really might be looking for.

I'm not suggesting that at all. A reasonable comparison wouldn't need clauses. If they were comparing it to Rhapsody, it would make sense. If iTunes had a subscription, it would make sense. And the problem isn't really with the comparison of the two anyway - it's in the ad basically saying Zune Pass (or any subscription service) is cheaper (when most people have their music collections already) and that it 'costs $30,000 to fill an iPod' - which is completely false. The inherent problem is that with any subscription service the instant you don't make your payment your music is gone (except for the 10 free songs a month in this case - which are effectively $1.50 each). It doesn't matter how long I subscribe - the moment I unsubscribe I've waisted $15 a month for N amount of months.

There are some that find subscription services great - and more power to them. But it is out of place comparing it to a per-pop service. I'm not merely defending iTunes - It'd be the same no matter who was on the other side.

Actually I'd just say you're biased. ;)

That's fine. You're entitled. :)

Looks like someone isn't please with the success MS is having with their Xbox360. Also it's really funny how so many mac users bought something from MS even though they always claim MS sucks. :D

You can strip the DRM off the music with a click of a button using a simple program. Considering this, the Zune pass is an amazing value. ;) For example I know a guy who paid $45 and ended up with over 14k songs.

Oh so your friend likes being a thief? :rolleyes:

How does that make him a thief. He paid for the downloads. And in either scenario where he strips or doesn't strip the DRM off the files, MS, record labels and the artists get paid the same amount. No stealing here buddy.

I wonder if you've ever pirated anything.

Its being a thief as much as getting a movie from Netflix and then ripping that movie with Handbrake to your computer and sending it back.

I honestly think that the inept 50-somethings (or the 20 something WOW! HIP! GROOVY! show poodles) designing these ads dont realize their subliminal significance, in that these ads will be ASSISTING sales of APPLE product.

We will have to wait a couple of quarters to see;

They are clueless
They dont get it
They are the dinosaurs

So the 45 dollars he paid equals the cost for the 14,000 downloads?

I think the best point made in this thread was early on and seems to have been ignored.

Microsoft is clearly lying and should be sued. Microsoft did not take into account Apple's move from 128kbs to 256kbs when they moved the iTunes store to iTunes+. A 120Gb iPod would only hold 15,000 four minute songs. That would cost between $10,000 and $20,000 depending on the price of the songs and whether or not you bought any albums.

The difference is huge! This ad should be pulled immediately, and Apple should be compensated. This is the worst fallacy I have ever seen in an ad in reference to a competitor's product!

Except the technical specifications portion of iPod pages still use 128Kbps as an example. Granted with iTunes+ the quality/size is larger, but a majority of already purchased iTunes music is probably not iTunes+ as the switch was fairly recent. Also, "Get a Mac" ads target Vista for its crashing and insecure OS - when a majority of these issues have been fixed.

Capacity

* 120GB hard drive
* Holds up to 30,000 songs in 128-Kbps AAC format
* Holds up to 25,000 iPod-viewable photos
* Holds up to 150 hours of video
* Stores data via USB hard drive

I actually really liked this ad, it's very modern, it comes in smell-o-vision. Nobody noticed? My house is now filled with the stench of desperation that came from it.

"If somebody's using iTunes, I tell them to use Zune Pass..."

Sooooo.... that means we could get zune pass on our iPods :D that's what he makes it seem like.

but yeah I haven't purchased an album or song at all this month, there goes $15, last month I just bought a movie and was given a CD, there goes another $15.... ( next month ) okay I found some songs I like 2 or 3 , $15 for 2 -3 songs. Okay I found a few albums I want, add up the previous months $42 and the 2 albums minus $15 covering the 2 albums . I spent $37 for 2 CDs and 2 or 3 songs.

Zune Pass is a good idea but you don't save money all the time.

Zunistic

All I have to say is that no guy is going to get the woman of his dreams into the sack by showing off all the music he rented on his oversized BrickPod.

Am I one of the few who would be willing to pay 15 a month for unlimited dl + 10 to keep. I wouldnt mind spending 5 bucks month on renting music (look at it that way instead). Sure I dont get to keep it, but there is a lot of stuff I want but can't buy all of right now. So i wouldn't mind paying 1.50 for 10 songs i like per month and getting as many songs temporary as I would like.

yes because that's what MS asks for it, and that's why i said Zune pass was such an amazing deal.

Yes, your "friend" stole. Every song purchased in a legal way, regardless of the type of media, gives money to the artist. Downloading them for free, regardless of the exact method, steals money from their pockets. That is who he stole from. Are you truly this immoral? Or just immature and stupid? (btw, it also happens to be illegal in the USA via both the DMCA and 1970s copyright laws....and with that volume, he/you could easily be prosecuted)

I have a coworker who has many thousand CDs and LPs. I have no doubt he's already spent far more than $30K on music in his life. And he could no doubt fill several 160GB iPods, even if converted to crap mp3. Me, I'm probably at under $7K for less than 1000 albums, mostly CDs. And it's pretty obvious how much money has been spent worldwide on iTunes and other such stores. I guess maybe M$ just wants a bigger piece of all this, that's why they are whining about it in this stupid commercial. That's what it always comes down to, eh?

Are people really so dumb and believe this kind of ads, or is it just M$?

First you need to remember lemmings are not all that bright to begin with.

Next, given how M$ has an ADHD record for starting up and dropping programs, what will become of the "renters" when M$ get's bored with supporting the Zune, or this store concept, or whatever element of the program that makes it work?

Is it time for the monkey to dance again?

The bitrate in the technical specs of an iPod have nothing to do with how much it would cost to fill a 120GB iPod with music from the iTunes Store. The ad is running now. Not three months ago. An incorrect 100% markup in a competitors prices should not be tolerated in any ad.

You bring up the Get a Mac ads (though they have nothing to do with this one). There are no blatant lies in them, unlike this Microsoft ad.
