I still find it a little disturbing but I think it's also possibly the single funniest thing I've ever seen involving Microsoft.

I have never actually used a zune. They looked ok really, except the brown one (IMHO).

So, now Zune software is gonna compete with Windows Phone 7? 😕

Zune now being used to brand the synchronisation software and music service - it no longer has anything to do with hardware in much the same way that iTunes is the player and music service with the iPod/iPhone being the devices themselves.

Personally I made no sense what so ever doing the hardware given that Microsoft was better suited focusing on the software and then letting the various vendors out there sort out the hardware details. IMHO I do think that they should expand Windows Phone 7 to include media players and tablets as well.

You might want to look stock prices if you doubt his comment about Microsoft. I've had Apple stock less than two years and have over doubled my initial $50K investment.

Microsoft could have so easily saved face had they just sold the Zune brand, manufacturing rights, etc. to some second-tier company, even if just for a token amount of a dollar. They could have said that they sold it to concentrate on their "core business" or some such nonsense and then, when it went belly up, Microsoft would not be holding the reins.

Concur. Never once saw a Zune.

I get the sense MS is scrambling to catch up. They are a software company, and Apple is a hardware & software company (and I'll concede in many cases hardware = gadgets). However,they are all driven by a few streams of software which they continue to improve upon.

Sounds like you need to get out more.

And why not? The Kinect sold in record numbers,the PS3 is playing catchup,and the 360 recently outsold the Wii.

The was always like the drunk 16 year old girl who arrives at a party in 4am and wonders why everyone is going home.

Though there wasn't anything that tragic about the Zune it just arrived on the Marketplace by far too late to gain any momentum or traction. The other main issue was that it was supposed to be the "first" real competition for the iPod yet it couldn't do anything better than an iPod, the *only* real thing it had upon release over the iPod was an FM tuner (BFD)...

Again I am really surprised they didn't spin off the XBOX360 success with a more integrated or game based Zune, it would have been a winner IMHO.

This drove me insane when I first saw this image - I thought it was a beta screen. But this was how it shipped apparently. I've noticed the same thing happen in some of the WinPhone7 screen shots and product demos. Can anyone explain this to me? What were the designers thinking?

I think people are reading way way to much into this. I see it as more the zune will become more like wp7 with out the phone much like how the iPod touch is an iPhone minus the phone part.
Zune set the stage for wp7 and now zune is going to go the other way.
