Translation "imitation iPods with phone capabilities"

Sounds like imitation iPhone.

And why not? The Kinect sold in record numbers, the PS3 is playing catchup, and the 360 recently outsold the Wii.

Kinect is fastest selling electronic on record
Xbox 360 Outsells the Wii in February
Xbox Division sees 86% Profit jump with $8 Billion profit.
Kinect outselling Playstation Move 5:1

Why would they walk away from that when they are the 'Big Daddy' of the console market.

You misunderstood my post. I meant that I don't see another hit consumer product for Microsoft in their future, not that they would walk away from xbox.

Looks like they finally got the message. Next step: they need to get the message that people (overall) dislike their awful phones, and that in the end they were trying to rip off of Apple's success on both accounts.

phone 7 is next.

RIP Zune

History Will Write :
1) The mistake was Microsoft competing with the Creative Zen (remember it).
2) The result is Microsoft killed both products;
3) The Zen had the market share (US and Internationally)
4) MS entered late, never really in the international marketplace, US only.
5) Both competing with the iPod that was global, was a mistake.

This will be correct unless the nokia JV with microsoft saves the day for windows mobile

Rumor has it that MS will go dormant (if it hasn't already) and introduce windows 8 with Nokia.

With apple having Lion OS being very similar to iOS (a single iOS on phone and PC), Microsoft might go the same way for their mobile device (making it the same or even closer with windows 8 & windows mobile 8 (or worse windows mobile 7.5 and windows 8) but one OS aka Apple

What's the Zen?

Regardless... Zune software was a completely different and BETTER (remember it) experience than iTunes.

Here's hoping Apple gets off their money-grubbing a$$es and strips away the bloat from iTunes. it's an absolutely horrible platform which they are using for anything and everything. Bad move Apple. It's like Apple is consulting with Ballmer on how NOT to innovate with iTunes.

You can't be more wrong. Surely iTunes became the largest music store and mobile software because of bloat. Not.

iPod killer... yeah, right.

Why is M$ even competing against Apple? They should be bold enough to create the playing field... like they always did... wait...

As I posted in a more obscure thread,

Never forget that the zune brought us this:

I still find it a little disturbing but I think it's also possibly the single funniest thing I've ever seen involving Microsoft.

Every time I see this picture, I think of one of two things:

  • Victim in a Korean splatter/horror film.
  • The more obvious one: O-face, aka J... In My Pants. :D

This move was not unexpected, although certainly it was in Microsoft's power to continue it as long as they wanted. Frankly MS has too many platforms to compete against in different markets with different strategies. They are large enough to do it, but anywhere they can focus will be beneficial to them. This is a smart move.

Regardless... Zune software was a completely different and BETTER (remember it) experience than iTunes.

Zune software requires a Zune, a WM7 phone, or a Kin, which means that not very many people can argue this point; I have no idea if what you are saying is true or not.

The irony is that MS grubs more of your money than Apple: 30% annual net profit margin versus 21%.

[...] strips away the bloat from iTunes.

I don't think of iTunes as bloated (like Office), but it definitely doesn't feel "clean" and optimized; it needs some attention.

it's an absolutely horrible platform which they are using for anything and everything.

iTunes is their media library, player and synch tool. I guess you are arguing that its use as a device backup and interaction tool is a bad decision. Given how much media needs to be synched to and fro and given where the media lives (usually) on the Mac, I'm not sure it's not such a clear cut problem to use it for iDevice management. Beyond that, I'm not sure it can be stated that it is used for "anything and everything"... so maybe you are just exagerating?

It's like Apple is consulting with Ballmer on how NOT to innovate with iTunes.

Yes, that is what it's like. Apple sucks at innovation -- they are doing nothing to push their products forward...

There have been several leaks of Windows 8 recently, and yes, it looks like it is incorporating aspects of the 'Metro' design into the Windows UI.

With even talk of a Windows Metro UI to replace the toned down 'Windows Basic' UI that runs on low specced machines.

Wow, and nobody could have seen this one coming. Proof that the demand is low: I've never even seen one!

I actually saw one in the wild. A student on mine was a Microsoft fanboi and owned a Zune rather than an iPod. I'm sure he'll be sad now that he won't be able to upgrade to Zune II in vomit beige rather than poo brown.

So long Zune and plays for sure, just not sure on what now.

I have no problem with competition and think at the very least Zune kept Apple on their toes, even if just a little. Now Apple has moved on and the iPod likely is to be dust as well with maybe the iPod Touch being the only one to survive.

I loved my Zune until MS took forever to fix the issue on W7x64 so I got an ipod instead about 15 months ago... I prefer the Zune software though since I like everything album/artist based with pretty images rather than itunes. :)

Since then I started using media monkey bc I hate itunes, but had to install it for my ipad.

Either way MS marketed the Zune poorly and took too long to fix stupid issues like "HEY I CAN'T SYNC FROM MY ZUNE TO W7!"... ugh

I was actually wondering the other day what happened to the Zune as I stopped seeing it in stores around here. Only thing you can pretty much buy is iPods

YOU WIN! (ha, ha, pun....)

This is a sound move by MS. I wonder how many jobs get lost when a decision like this is made?

Well, the Chinese factory will go on to make something else, and the Zune Team at Redmond is probably already on the Windows Mobile one....

So in this case, none...
