MS did it with Xbox. They can do with the new phone as well. Funny how so many people here bash MS and at the same time own an Xbox360 hehe.

There's not a darn thing innovative about the Xbox 360. It's no better than the PS3. If anything the Nintendo is the most innovative with the interactive features it offers.

Word Life

Microsoft and Verizon deserve each other.

Preach on brother.

Every phone on Verizon is nerfed so that signal quality can be maintained. I'm sure this unholy union will pave the way for some new totally effed up DRM.

I got my first smart 'phone in 2001. It ran Windows Mobile and I thought it was great. Several smart 'phones later I found the most disappointing aspect of my experience was the lack of development of the WinMo OS. In 2 years the functionality of my iPhone OS has advanced in it's functions, far more than WinMo did in my previous 6 years.

In the western US, Verizon is the place to be. Great coverage. Excellent customer service (in my experience). Crappy phones. I recently tried to use a new Blackberry storm... ewww

I agree, when I was with them the sound quality was better than at&t IMO. My only issue with at&t is when I talk to people I will have full bars on 3G and it sounds like the person I am talking to is breaking up like I have zero bars. I'm glad I don't use the cell phone part of the iPhone a lot or this would get to me.

umm, doesn't microsoft already have a mobile phone program?

heh, i just don't think that says volumes? Blackberry, samsung have created iphone copycats.

That said, i don't love monopolies... and who knows maybe in this case Microsoft will have some good ideas.

Apple has been dragging its heels alot lately on new tech... iphone 3g is essentially the same phone as 2 years ago, only update was 3g, nothing else of importance was updated except the software.

lets hope this new tech pushes apple to start innovating again.
iphone has a monopoly?

They do, and its a failure. If they join forces with Verizon, then it'll be double the failure:)

Seems they are not making as much money of Windows Mobile as they would like, lol.

Microsoft will target the business market and Apple will stay in the consumer niche. Guess who will be selling more phones in the end? Tip: It's the company that plays better with the average corporate server room, because that's where the volume is. And that, traditionally, is not Apple's playground.

But to be honest, I don't care and almost everybody else here shouldn't either. I don't own any Microsoft or Apple shares, and most of you probably don't either.

Isn't their current strategy with Windows Mobile winning over the enterprise?

I support Apple and all, but Microsoft is 10 times the size of Apple (probably more), you won't see Microsoft going anywhere for a long time.

Market Value, April 28

Apple: 110.61B
http://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ:aapl

Microsoft: 177.37B
http://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ:MSFT

Logic fail. MS is not 10 times the size of Apple.

Why wouldn't Apple sell to Verizon?

Did they refuse ATT, just because ATT still sells tons of Blackberries and WinMo phones (with more features, even) ? Hardly.

It'd be a lonely business for Apple if they wanted to be the only smartphone maker on any carrier. They can't compete with others if they don't show up to the party.

Do you know that overwhelming majority of world use GSM phone?
Verizon does not use GSM; instead, Verizon uses an incompatible format called CDMA.

Amen to that. One reason Verizon wouldn't do the iPhone in the first place was they wanted to be able to limit whatever they wanted, feature-wise. Verizon phones are always crippled compared to what the phone is supposed to be able to do.

Cool. Looking forward to seeing what this develops in to.

As far as some of the comments here go, I don't get it. Competition is a good thing and Microsoft (unlike Palm) really has a lot of weight to throw behind any new devices. As an iPhone user, this can only mean a better iPhone for me and so I'm all for it. Microsoft has done a fantastic job with Windows 7, so maybe, just maybe, they'll get in gear with whatever flavor of mobile windows they put on this new device.

I also believe that the iPhone absolutely should be available to everyone, no matter the carrier. I have yet to hear a sensible opposition to why this shouldn't be so. There is no perfect carrier out there and a person should be able to use an iPhone on whatever carrier best suits their needs. What's the downside? Apple sells more phones and increases its revenue? Apple increases their market share? I don't get it.

What did the Zune bring to ipod users, absolutely jack. That's the problem with Microsoft, they have money from their Windows and Office monoplies to throw at projects even without making any money off it and without bringing anything much to the field. Look at Xbox and Zune and their search engine for example. The Xbox has turned out to do ok but they've poured like around 6 billion into it without making any money until recently, same thing they're doing with their search engine while getting mauled by Google. If Apple was to go into some of these money losing ventures, they would get mauled by the press who believe the company is still doomed to fall under. I hear they are also going to be opening "money making stores". Sigh.

I agree. Bring on the competition. The iPhone isn't perfect but well ahead of the game, and much as Apple like to push on, it is very easy to slow things down (and refuse to do things like "Copy and Paste") when you're still making lots of cash...

I thank Blackberry for forcing Apple's to implement c + p :).
I thought it was the Palm Pre that forced Apple to release copy and paste, can you guys make up your mind?

The more companies innovating, the better Apple has to make the iPhone. Competition is good, people!

Now I'm not going to say that Apple is the only innovative company on earth, but seriously??? You call this Microsoft innovating??? WOW!

They rip apart everything Apple has done with the iPhone from day one and say how bad it will fail and that their business model is superior and now they will just copy it all like they always do after every other company has already tried to copy it and failed and after they have eaten their words and watched the immense success and innovation that Apple has lead, meanwhile almost every sector of their company is eating #*@% and dying.

Ya, Microsoft innovates.

even tho that is technically correct, i still think Microsoft is Much larger

Not quite double

MSFT 2008 Total Fiscal Year Earnings: ~ $60 Billion
MSFT 2008 Net Revenue: ~ $17.5 Billion

Apple 2008 Total Fiscal Year Earnings ~ $38 Billion
Apple 2008 Net Revenue: ~ $6.75 Billion

Neither company is doing poorly... Every company is cyclic, Microsoft is struggling but to count them out is stupid.

It wasn't too long ago that Apple was on the ropes.

Didn't they also challenge the Macintosh with something called Windows? We know how that worked out.

The mandatory "remember Zune?" comment is getting old and doesn't really apply here. Portable music players are consumer products. Microsoft rules supreme on the business market, and that will be the primary target demographic for this phone.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/gadgetreviews/?p=3762

"The vast majority of iPhone owners, 73 percent, use their mobile devices primarily for personal reasons, according to the results of a new survey by Compete.

On the other hand, 59 percent of owners of other smartphones primarily used their devices for business and work-related tasks, according to the survey."

All MS need to do is fuse the iPhone form factor and multi-touch UI with total integration with Windows and Office, and businesses will buy this thing in 100-packs.
At least Apple is making money off Macs and they are clearly the only company offering an alternative for consumers, Linux is irrelevant. Many companies have fallen against Windows but Apple is still here offering an alternative for us and they are making a killing of Macs not unlike the money losing "ipod killer."

But wait... why does M$ need to sell it's own phone? According to the other Steve (tha'd be Stevie B, the wild tounged one) M$ ships millions and millions and millions of phones every month in the form of Windows Mobile. Remember when he challenged the iPhone when it was announced by saying "let's see how the competition goes." Guess we know now. M$ lost.

If you are feeling nostalgic.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5oGaZIKYvo

Is Microsoft getting ready to admit Windows Mobile is a failure?

These guys are proper clowns. They scrapped Play for Sure and released the Zune, now they are coming to make their own phone even though they have Windows Mobile, and what do you know they also want to open their own stores?

Microsoft and Verizon both Suck!!!!

Microsoft has always done this, they just copy what is out there that is successful and they try to make a profit in a hot market, aka X-Box, ZUNE, Windows. The problem is, when they make this stuff, its usually trash and barely works likes it suppose too. Verizon has the best cell towers and coverage, no doubt, but they nickel and dime a person to death and lock lots of features on these phones. V-Cast sucks, their Apps suck and the verizon software really sucks. Verizon are just really greedy bastards. Now if Verizon would just let the iphone alone and have full access to their network, i would buy an iphone on verizon, but i serious doubt verizon would get rid of their v-cast and all their other crappy apps and software just for apple, i bet the compromise will be that apple has to include v-cast, ringtones and all the other crap verizon offers on the verizon iphone.

True, but Apple went out and got Jobs back. Jobs oversaw the iMac and then the iPod. M$ is stuck w/ Ballmer. He's a great cheerleader, but innovator he is not. Nearly every major product he has launched aside from Windows and Office has come up 2nd or worse.

They've been itching to manufacture hardware for ages, the problem was just that they were worried about competing with the manufacturers who buy (and ultimately, sell) Windows. So they went into areas where they didn't risk angering HP, Dell and the others. They started with mice and keyboards. Then gaming consoles. Then music players. And now, phones. The phone thing is interesting because that's the first time they're going head to head with other manufacturers who license Windows, and I'm guessing that they're testing the waters to see if it might be feasible to go into computer manufacturing.

And yet many of the mac users here that like to bash MS own a Xbox360. If they can take majority share away from the dominant sony playstation without any innovation, imagine what they could with some! :D

Actually thinking about it, Xbox360 does have a nice piece of innovation. The superior online experience. That innovation is the reason why Xbox360 is so popular. Let's see Apple taking a crack at the gaming market and see how well it does.

Agreed and the main reason it's beating Sony. I think the Xbox was the first console to come with an integrated hard drive.

To say Microsoft didn't innovate with the X-box product line is disingenuous.
