As a long-time tabletpc & now iPad user for content creation, I am just giddy with mocking ridicule on MS's history on tablets, but...

...if I can run CAD, Illustrator, and use a stylus, on a small tablet alongside my ipad, I will be happy. Perhaps a small sleeve with one on each side... like a planner... a 10lb planner with two power cords...

Guess I've been lucky. iWork has done everything with our companies excel spreadsheets Office does.

I don't use my iPad for productivity and when I have I found myself wishing for a laptop. I think Apple found the right niche for the tablet...M$ thinks that there is a huge latent market for people who want productivity on a tablet...I think they're sadly mistaken. Anybody who has had to type a while on a tablet will tell you if you're going to be doing a lot of typing and manipulating that a laptop is simply a better option.

It will be nice to see what M$ unveils though...however I think whatever they do is going to look clunky next to the upcoming iPad2.

Really? Still using the dollar sign?

I am quite sure it is not hard to laugh at m$'s attempt at a slate :p

I find it more amusing that MS is still hung up on the term "slate", one which Apple never had any intention of using and MS latched onto cos they thought it sounded cool and hip. It doesn't, it sounds LAME!

What 70% of the web are you using? I've had only one site in the past year where I needed Flash.

Yep. People like to quote numbers as to how much of the web uses flash, but the real question is, how much of the web NEEDS flash? Much of flash's use is in advertising, and I think we can all agree that flash based ads are anything but "needed". There are browser plugins and extensions that you can get that will replace most flash video with HTML5 versions, and many sites are switching to HTML5 natively. Flash is just not needed to experience most of the web anymore. Even games are beginning to be developed in HTML5. Source. Flash is done.

Insanity

Didn't someone define Insanity as doing the same thing over and over again, while expecting a different outcome.

Balmer was also touting Windows Tablets at CES last year and it fizzled completely, just as it fizzled every other time they made a big windows tablet push.

Time for something new, or just new management?

Rudy, you sound like a very knowledgable person. Would you care to explain how and when HTML5 can fully replace Flash as delivery platform for apps based on custom interactive vector animation? Something Flash was doing for past 15 years.

Well I would start by not putting Flash in the ad as the major selling point against the competition. that is just silly. That is just appealing to people who dislike Apple, and basically they are already sold on the competition. What a waste of money that ad campaign is.

Why not pointing it out that you could play games outside App Store, or view vector animation? Since you were claiming Flash will die soon I was thinking you know how to replace it with other technology / tools.

Flash will die or Adobe will fix it. I suspect the latter. Some say the criticism of Adobe is unwarranted but if it makes them better then it is a good thing.

The question though is can Adobe actually fix it, without making radical changes that might break existing flash-based apps/web pages?

It seems like Flash is so far down the drain that fixing it might mean a complete re-write.

I saw a small clip of this, Steve Ballmer didn't look like he cared about the product, using your finger to scroll a Word document, at least the Apple folks know how to get you interested in a product. I don't think I would trade the iPad for anything coming out of Redmond.

It's clunky, but you can e-mail the file to yourself and then work on it with Pages or another mobile office suite. Or you could send it to Google Docs and work on it there.

Nevertheless, if Apple means what they say with "It just works" then iOS is going to need some sort of file manager that can share files wirelessly or via the sync cable with OS X and Windows without the need for iTunes.

I'm not an MS basher, I actually really like their Office suite, and I don't mind Windows 7, as far as Windows OS's go.

But I have to say that I'm surprised that a guy like Ballimer is still at the helm. They don't really innovate anymore, almost embarrassingly so. It seems like they wait and find out what others make, and then put their own spin on it.

Time for some new, shrewd, younger and more tech savvy blood in MS.

I don't want MS to go away. Apple need competition, big time.

Nitpick: is it right to say MS is "relaunching" slates "again"? Either they are relaunching them, or they are launching them again.

Yawn!

They re-announced it. is it because everybody forgot about it and all bought iPad's instead. fail :apple:

Maybe this is MS's solution;

Apple should make a really mobile and pocketable Mac like that. With Mac OS X inside.

What in your opinion needs fixing?

Latest runtime can even run 3D games with 0% CPU. Of course if the underlying OS provider is willing to cooperate. Apple is obviously afraid of these capabilites so it's banning flash on iOS and crippling it on Mac OSX.

If they have relaunched more than once(and they have) I think it is ok to say relaunching again.

I am a fan of the Yankees. I am a fan of Apple. In my mind, those are the same. There is nothing wrong with being a fanboy, so long as you don't let it cloud you from the truth, although it works the other way too. Haters should not let their hate for Apple cloud their judgment either, but haters will be haters, and fanboys will be fanboys.

I am a fan of what works the best. And right now that happens to be Apple products. If Banana Computer came out with products that worked better, I would drop SJ and Co. and switch to Banana. When I am ready to buy a tablet, it will be the iPad (I've seen how well they work from using my family and friends' iPads). I highly doubt MS will be able to offer a quality tablet that surpasses the iPad.

I agree somewhat. Ballmer should have been gone in 2005.

The problem is, especially on these forums, people don't see some of the work that Microsoft does in the corporate space. People look at Zunes, and Xboxes, and Phones, and claim "they don't innovate."

When you start getting into their core products, SQL, Exchange, Windows 2008 R2, the System Center suite (except DPM), etc, they are huge innovators.

The flip side is that people think Steve Jobs is boy wonder, and invents all these fantastic things and that Apple pulls all these great ideas out of thin air and they are flipping geniuses, when in reality they do a lot of acquiring and improving (which yes, is still very impressive - but not worthy of the worship that they get from some people).
