I giggle, I laugh

It's just like Microsoft to delay their "response." I laugh at the very thought of a counter attack. "Sure our O/S is crap and Apple helped you to see how bad it really is. But we're fixed now, and um well... there ya go."

Microsoft has nothing to counter. The damage has been done for years, the world is much smarter than you think Uncle Bill.

What exactly do they need to advertise vista for? Its on every big name non-mac computer pre-installed! and its crap, but...
I can't see them convincing many people to upgrade from XP as well, especially not from a millions of dollars advertising campaign!!
What can they say about apple anyway?

Fail-in-progress.

If this was an old west duel Microsoft would be shot, dead and buried before even drawing. They're just now planning to put out some new ads to compete with Apple's, sounds like a late draw to me.

I like Vista, all my software and peripherals have worked since day 1, including my X-Fi soundcard. I install it on all Windows machines I build and recommend it to anyone that asks for an upgraded Windows machine. I also recommend OS X to people who want a brand new machine. I enjoy both, run both and will always use both. Could Microsoft done a better job? Yep. Can Apple do a better job? Yep. Is Apple's OS bullet proof? Nope. Is Windows bullet proof? Hell no. Turn the tables around and Apple controls more than 80% of the market and I bet they get attacked all day from hackers. What Microsoft needs to do is rebuild Windows from scratch. I don't care if it takes 7 years to write this program. Hell the registry has been in use since Windows 3.1, albeit a very rarely used system back then.

Why has it taken MS so long to respond? Well, what's Apple's market share? Last time I looked it was about 7.3%. That's not a real worrisome number. MS is probably responding now because they can, not because they're particularly worried about anything. I do agree about the competition, however. Windows Mobile is what happens when there's no credible competition.

i love Mac OSX, and will never use windows, however i do not like the "get a mac" campaign. I think it is very negative by criticizing there competitors they should focus on their own stuff. I think they make apple look very cocky, and can push stereotypes that may force possible swappers change there mind.
Im glad MS are finally reacting to it, and hope it pushes apple to develop.

upgraded security and compatibility with both applications and devices.

ok, I'll give them the security but COMPATIBILITY WITH APPS AND DEVICES? I mean come on, I'm sorry but this "compatibility" of which they speak has been near non-existent...

upgraded security? you mean that little guy who yells at me every time I launch an app in Vista? (Seriously I get warnings when I open the control panel and the updater)

Little? Doesn't look so little...

Competition is very good. But I really, really hate MS and their business practices. Products are of arguable quality at best, but nowhere near as insulting as the company.

Meh, they make nice computer mouses, keyboards and joysticks, most of them with excellent Mac drivers unlike Logitech. Maybe they should split up into MicroSoft and MicroHard. The latter might establish quickly as a high quality input device brand.

wow thats quite a bit of money that they could instead use to build a comparable operating system... or maybe even (dare i say it?) innovate.

I also think microsoft could make some interesting hardware if they actually tried.

oh well, i'm more than content with apples offerings :)

Microsoft, here's an idea: Instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars on promoting Vista, how about you spend that money on developing an OS that is actually functional and that people can actually use? Vista is a lost cause. Face it, you screwed up. 5 years? Really? You guys need to start from scratch. So go back down into the basement and we'll see you in 2013.

Wow, that's money down the drain.

The more people who use vista = more people switch to OSX.

Yeah... Because people will spend $1000.

Realize they got a crappy OS and then spend $2000 on a mac.

Right.

I love my Macbook Pro. I loved my powerbook. I love my 8 iPods and my iPhone.

But thinking that people are going to buy one and then the other is crazy.

Maybe it will get them to reassess in 5 years when they're ready to buy a new computer.

Marketing, marketing, marketing.

I think Apple needs a CHEAP iMac to steal even more windows users.

When you see me even TOUCH a PC you'll know their ad campaign was a success.

"They tell us it's the iWay or the highway."

Seriously? I wonder how many millions of dollars were sent on thinking up that catch phrase.

Also, I am curious as to what exactly Microsoft will focus on as being better than OS X. Bragging about better protection against viruses, spyware etc. for instance isn't really something to be proud about since those aren't even issues on OS X.

No. You have it wrong. MS is not targeting the 5% of the world that uses mac OS X and hoping to get 10% of those to switch to Vista. That would be a huge waste of money for little gain. No, they are targeting the huge number of Windows XP and Windows 2000 users who have not yet upgraded. If they can get 10% of those users to switch to Vista they can make some real money.

That is Apple's advantage. When Apple gains 1% more marget share Apple grows by 20%. That is huge but if Microsoft growst by 1% no one cares. All Microsoft can hope for is to remain where they are. They simply can't double sales. But Apple has the potential for 10X growth

iWay or the Highway

Does it seem funny to hear Microsoft complaining about someone else calling the shots. do you think thay are really this hypocritical or just deluded?

If Vista, or Microsoft is SO bad, then why did Apple have to make it run on a Mac in order to be able to get good software. You know that a LOT of Macs run it.
When Microsoft will start to die, is when Apple comes out with a version of OS X like Snow Leopard that will run on PC's.

Yes, if OS X is that great, then if there was a version that would run on PC's, then people would start using it and Microsoft would die.

But there are a lot of users that state on this Forum 'if that happens, then Apple will die'.

So, there you go.

Yes, Apple could offer both, PC version and Macs with it. If it's just the Apple hardware that's so far above the rest, then Apple could charge the premium prices for their hardware and survive in both worlds.

iWay or the highway. That's creative.

Can't wait to see these ads. Will they bash OS X? For its stability and security?

I doubt they'll bash OS X nearly as much as Apple bashed Vista. They'll probably tout Vista's "improved" capabilities (such as better security). And they'll probably say that Vista is compatible with almost everything now.

The only thing I can think of them criticizing Apple for is the lack options they offer. With a PC, you can pretty much get any imaginable configuration. However, that would not be an easy point to build an advertising campaign around, especially since it has nothing to do with Vista itself.
