We think that's a sad message. Software out there is made to be compatible with your whole life."

Did no one notice this quote? So, Microsoft understands making software compatible with your whole life, and Apple doesn't? :p Isn't that part of Apple's whole marketing scheme?

Seriously, is anyone going to go out looking for Vista? Most people will not trouble themselves and will just upgrade when they purchase a new PC. I pity the person that sees the commercial and goes to Walmart saying "GOTTA HAVe VISTA!" immediately upon his brainwashing.

Well, to be fair...I find it sad when people see a Keynote and say that very thing about every single product Steve announces.

oops, sorry Microsoft. I just showed some PC-Mac ads to my uncle and he is now a new convert to Mac...

W-W-W-Windows!

They should do something really retro. How about they dress up a typical businesswoman in some wild, pastel colours with leg warmers and crazy glasses. Then this really cool Herbie Hancock like music could Rockit To You while the businesswoman gone wild raps, yeah that's it, RAPS about the virtues of Windows Vista. And then the "I'm a PC" guy could come into the office and look turned on.

"Key features to be promoted include upgraded security and compatibility with both applications and devices."

So their advertising campaign is "This version is better than the last"??? Might as well be "Vista! What XP should have been!"

Matthew

That's not really fair, any new verison of software could take that same approach.

That's not going to happen. Overall Windows still has 3rd party software superiority, so if they can keep that the battle certainly hasn't been "lost".

The battle I was referring to was the quality of OSX vs. Vista, not in the bigger sense of MS global domination...

Actually, I wouldn't discount Microsoft's efforts here. Their new ad agency is Crispin Porter & Bogusky, and they are very, very good.

See for yourself: http://www.cpbgroup.com/

This should be interesting.

(although, when they won the account, it was conditional that they would still use Macs agency-wide. HA!)

I'm sure microsoft is going to do the mature, responsible thing and actually advertise their products features in a favorable light, and compare Vista to XP in an effort to get their customers to upgrade.

When apple takes cheap pot shots at microsoft, its viewed as david vs. goliath and is acceptable in a cute kind of way.

If Microsoft starts hammering on Apple, they will look like a bully.

Besides that, apple users buy office, and XP or Vista.. so they really don't care. This was just way to get some cheap press.

Geeze..............

Why is everyone so hurt by this? Every time the competition (whoever it may be) comes up with a good product, bad product, or in this case, ads to counteract apple's attacks, people here shed tears and vote this as 'negative'.

With every product the competition releases (no matter how crappy) and with every ad they release (iWay or the highway was actually pretty nice), apple will just have to counter with something better. so, drink some warm milk and settle down for a nice nap instead of going crazy over M$ defending themselves. This won't bring :apple: down.

can't we all just get along?!

Can't we all just get along? These kinds of divisive computer ads are what Americans are tired of. We're tired of the same old attack ads trying to show that one product is better than the other. What we need is a nationalized software company for the masses...... with NO competition... like the DMV!
Think of it, how wonderful THAT would be.... ;) [sarcasm]
But seriously, did any of you actually decide to buy your mac because of those ads? I think they are kind of lame. The ads are probably mostly for stockholders to feel good and keep investing, happy their company is getting noticed.

upgraded security? you mean that little guy who yells at me every time I launch an app in Vista? (Seriously I get warnings when I open the control panel and the updater)

Im becoming a die-hard apple user (i just recently made the switch), but as an ex-windows user i gotta admit that they DID improve the security in Vista, and NO im not talking about that little annoying pop up question/warning thing..... they did improve the overall system security when compared to XP.

As I was reading the source, Internet Explorer (I'm at work) had an error and had to close. Too bad we don't have Vista. =P That would have been even funnier.

Anyone seen the spoof BlackBook ad on youtube?

"Hi, guys, I'm a macbook."
"And I'm a PC."
BMB: "Hey guys"
MB: "Who are you?"
BMB: "I'm a black macbook.."
etc.

They have awoken... "The sleeping GIANT"

I like Mac's and use them but...
I have wondered why MS hasn't responded to these campaigns...

We shall see what happens...

wonder if it will be on par with internet explorer and netscape. I'd love to see them slug it out.

iWay or the highway? Last time I checked the highway was a very dangerous place to do any computing.

I seriously hope that gem of a slogan didn't come from this guy, or not only is Microsoft throwing money down the drain, but someone needs to verify that Mr. Bogusky hasn't had a mental break down.

If Microsoft gets this right it could shift some momentum and mind-share away from Apple.

When did Microsoft last make a good advert or put across a really compelling message? Traditionally Microsoft has had a poor record of talking with consumers “Wow starts Now”, “Your Potential, Our Passion”, “You make it You” and the “Wel-come to the Social” have all pretty much drawn blanks and done little to engage the general public.

We can see they may be making some basic erros again:
The “Compatibility with both applications and devices” line quite obviously won't sell Windows Vista to anyone who knows Windows XP is already compatible with all the applications and devices they need to use.

I have 2 conclusions:
[1] If not executed with the subtlety, charm and humour of the get a mac campaign it may be another fall flat again and hand the momentum back to Apple.

[2] Announcing this campaign early is also a fairly dumb move. Apple can now allocate ad budgeting and start throwing around ideas to counter these counter ads.

How about the Logo when MS released Vista ...

iWay or the highway. That's creative.

Can't wait to see these ads. Will they bash OS X? For its stability and security?

Creative indeed... What Moron over at MICROSOFT (and I'll bet there are more than just a few:rolleyes:) thought that THIS VISTA LOGO (below), would be "THE ONE" --- I'll bet they sat there in some stupid corporate board meeting, and all looked and agreed...."Yeah, this will launch us into the 21st century.... we'll be on the FOREFRONT of the digital age !!"

No really, I mean it.....now take a look at the logo.... wtf?? It's a guy walking, hunched over....looking somewhat dejected, hands in his pocket...I suspect....and not at all overly excited about what he's about to do.... INSTALL VISTA on his computer !!!! I think I can read this guys mind .... "DAMN, I shoulda just bought a MAC....at least they work !"

OK, enough PC bashing, ok not yet .... Go ahead Microsoft, spend MILLIONS of DOLLARS fighting APPLE... try to tell everyone in 30 seconds that there are like 11 different versions of Vista, and if you have an old computer you're out of luck because your hardware won't support it... but oh, wait... that's right, I can go to BEST BUY & get a new PC for like $300... and in 6 months when it doesn't work any more, I'll just go get a new one !!! :D

" Software out there is made to be compatible with your whole life."

'compatible' well done microcrap, you can finally spell it, now learn what the word means.

I would go after COST. Especially in the current economic environment.

Attacking features or design would be suicide.

Attacking cost may hurt Apple... until Apple fires back comparing:

Mac OS X Leopard: approximately $130. Period.
Vista (approximate - you can find for less on Amazon):
  • Home Basic Upgrade: $100.
  • Home Basic: $200.
  • Home Premium Upgrade: $130.
  • Home Premium: $270.
  • Ultimate: $330.
  • Ultimate Upgrade: $330.

Hmm... to get anything above the most basic (barely looks like Vista) Vista, you have to pay as much as you do for Leopard. To get everything, much more.

The only companies which could realistically attack Apple on price is PC manufacturers who sell $300 computers (i.e. Dell, etc).

Wow, this is sad. It's like showing up to a party only to see people filtering out, and going home...

I've used Vista since BETA 1. I do have to say it's not as bad as people think. But it's not that great, considering it took soooo long to get out. What's funny is that everyone thinks it's only been out for a little while [not here, but if you chat with people on the outside]. I mean it was RTM in November 2006. Even if people started buying it in January 07, it's still over a year old...

Anywho, I'm happy tapping away on my MB...it does everything better, easier, and cleaner...ahhhhhhh...a breath of fresh air.

The battle I was referring to was the quality of OSX vs. Vista, not in the bigger sense of MS global domination...

For business customers Vista is still better though. And if you compare to Vista Ultimate they share most of the same features, so Microsoft could certainly do pretty well simply by only having one version of Windows 7.

No really, I mean it.....now take a look at the logo.... wtf?? It's a guy walking, hunched over....looking somewhat dejected, hands in his pocket...I suspect....and not at all overly excited about what he's about to do.... INSTALL VISTA on his computer !!!! Hahah.

I'm sooo excited about buying 'indowsVista!'

To be honest, I've used MS OS's since I Beta Tested for the Company starting with Windows 95. When Beta wasn't placed in the General Public's hands.
Because of my iPhone, I've started to take a close look at Macs.
I do not like MS prices for the OS major upgrades. I do like the PC and 3rd party Software prices.
I don't like Apples high prices for hardware which means I can't upgrade all 5 of my computers to Macs.
I DO like Apples major version upgrade prices.
So, Microsoft HIGH price OS, Low price PC's & Hardware.
Apple Low price OS, High price Macs and Hardware.

All in all, I have REALLY been thinking of trying an iMac.

But as in the post above, all I see on here is people bashing Microsoft while at the same time complaining about all of their Apple Software/Hardware problems.

So, now I question, is is just good advertising and Bad computers/OS with Apple also? It really makes me afraid to lay out all of that cash if that's the case.

Wow, that's money down the drain.

The more people who use vista = more people switch to OSX.

Time to polish my fanboy weapons again...

Microsoft is DEAD in the water and acts like a desperate zombie now...too late, Microsoft. The wheel keeps on turning and nothing can stop it now. I alone switched AT LEAST 4 people I know to Macs; and there is no turning back for them.

Vista sucks for EVERYONE out there, NO ENTERPRISES are adopting it, and PCs continue to lag way behind Apple in terms of design, reliability and integration. PCs suck, MS sucks, Windows sucks. Not to mention the absolute domination of iPods and the revolution caused by iPhone.

GO APPLE! TORA! TORA! TORA!
