I just want to say that Microsoft looks like its innovating because there is a lot to improve on their product because it is a "bad' product (just look at IE and how much of a failure Win8 was).

In comparison, Apple has already fixed and innovated a lot that there is not much new to bring to the table. Microsoft now is like Apple in 1997 when Jobs first came, there is a lot of things to improve on.

I still think that if you put Apple products (iphone, ipad, OSX) vs Microsoft products Apple will win hands down except for some areas of advantage like Office and Gaming.

In the end its a win-win situation for everyone. If Microsoft decides to build Edge for Mac platform, Safari may be on the way out. Too much competition, too small of a market share.

I think Apple's issues with Yosemite and ios8 would be an argument against your point of apple not needing to fix or innovate.

I see MS swinging for the fences and that is good. I see apple loading up on features (some of which is innovation), but its failing in the execution given that they seem to be rushing it out the door.

I'm really impressed with the stability and features of windows 10 TP, I see a lot of good things coming out of Redmond.

I wouldn't say this is a missteps on Apple's part. I believe Jobs once said he knows they cannot beat Microsoft and I don't think that has ever been their point. They just want to make great products and they definitely make great consumer electronics.

Microsoft has dominated the enterprise market for such a long time. I can't see how Apple can make a dent in that area.

The point is that they figured out long ago that they could beat their heads up against the wall, and spend tons of resources battling to gain minimal market share in the enterprise through the front door. But it would be minimal, and it would be market share of a declining market. Or they could focus on the consumer products and come in through the back door, with products like the iPhone and iPad. That strategy has worked very well for them. The vast majority of people who use smartphones for their work use iPhones.

Its web design acceptability hinges on whether they require developers to use special tags like old versions of Explorer did. I remember those bad old days of using browser detection and workarounds.

You mean those days are gone?

about time

It not only looks good. Hopefully will be a good enough proposal to just in my case have it as a secondary browser.
Not fan or user of chrome. Google collects enough data out of me already.

Microsoft needs more people like the one that designed and carried the edge project in other fronts. Its a shame to see such historic company doing nothing relevant for the last 10 years but the xbox.

I've always thought Apple missed a great opportunity when it named its Internet browser Safari. Why didn't they name it iBrowse? That would have fit in with its "i" naming system AND would have made for some clever wordplay. ;)

Incredible how Microsoft lacks marketing 101 skills. They want to get away of their awful IE brad, they name their new explorer Edge and use the same logo LMAO. Unless they actually think there's nothing wrong with IE and people's perception of it.

It's install footprint? I think it's down to under 10GB now... Or do you mean memory? RAM's cheap if you aren't maxed out :p I guess we have different things to look forward to in the next version.

RAM's cheap only if Apple will allow you to upgrade it. Unfortunately on many newer Apple products that's not the case with soldered on RAM. You either pay the higher price to let Apple do it or you're stuck.

And 10GB for an OS is pretty damn big. People have forgotten how many amazing things you can do with a whole lot less.

What? His point was about Microsoft, not Apple. He didn't even mention Apple. How is your post even remotely responsive to his point?

But it was implied. Some people have their heads stuck so far up their rear ends when it comes to Apple that they find it impossible to acknowledge that someone else may be doing something good. It's the knee jerk reaction on both sides that I'm really sick of. I use both platforms and neither is perfect despite what diehard fans of each camp would proclaim but I appreciate it when companies at least try. Seems like Microsoft is at least trying here.

To be honest, I don't do web design for money anymore (except for occasionally working on my own website) but just before I got out it was getting better with more recent versions of IE. Sorry that it's still bad :(

No, it's AppleButSometimesWeTalkAboutInterestingDevelopmentsFromCompetitorsofAppleRumors

I think the part where Edge is going to work somehow with iOS apps is the tie-in.

Have to say, Microsoft is really stepping up their game with Windows 10. I'm a Windows 10 insider running the developer preview on both my Mac (Virtual Machine) and my secondary Windows PC.

It looks nice, runs good and is generally becoming a great operating system. Kudos to you Microsoft

We don't use that site for ... reasons, I'm told. We use a site that shows IE at a much lower share because ... reasons. I'm not really sure, but somehow that one is bad and the one that shows that IE isn't being used is good.

Actually, it's a little ahead of IE11, and only lags behind Safari 8 by about 20 points. It's nothing to brag about, but it's still a work in progress.

might as well provide a link backing up my statement.

And as of today, I just got 390 on the most recent Spartan build. So they're not sitting on their hands. I wish Apple would try to push Safari a bit faster. :\

Edit: 402 if I activate all of the flags

Edit 2: And I get 412 for WebKit Nightly.

My question would be whether it follows standards that the rest of the browsers on the market follow, or are we going to again be treated to MS's own "standards" that cause web designers to invent workarounds for everything they build.

Sure, it looks pretty, but if it doesn't work with web standards, it's just another cause of problems.

Web standards like what? Be more specific. HTML 5? CSS3?

Rather a funny statement considering that mobile Safari on iOS is now the poster child for causing web developers the most grief. Apple has a largest market share in this arena and little motivation to move forward with standards when they can just do it how they want instead.

It's now common practice to make it work on mobile Safari and then find work arounds for the other mobile browsers that are more standards compliant.

WebKit hasn't been about standards in a while. WebKit prefixes rule the roost, it seems. :\

Nah. Sorry. Everything you said there is useless drivel.

Thanks for the useful feedback. ;)

it's hard to imagine nothing was useful in those few paragraphs. It's easy to write nothing useful in a nine-word response, though.

What for? The HTML 5 Test Suite of functionality shows this and all browsers from Microsoft dead last.

Just to check out. Trust me, I highly doubt anything would budge me from Safari being my full-time browser. It's just much, much quicker, and the look fits OS X so much better than anything else.

Reading List? Safari has that since ages ago! Nothing is new here. I still prefer Safari for my web browser.
