Fantastic - my question was don't you want to control what goes on there? If you had control, you wouldn't have to put your SSN on there.

But you could, like that lifelock guy. ;)

I also wouldn't want my text messages, my last few emails, my upcoming appts., or who has called me on there....

This would have been news in 2008. Too bad it's 2011 soon.

Seems like pretty big news now, judging from computer websites. Of course I doubt it will get the "Breaking News" on most TV channels that Apple seems to get for some reason. (Steve is buddy buddy with power media people.) But none the less, your comment is such a funny attempt to try to put the news down for the one simple fact that it's a Microsoft. Alternate universe, it would have been the most amazing OS ever, if it had an Apple logo.

I give windows phone 7's six month's, microsoft will probably have to pull them off the shelves due to poor sales just like the kin.

INNOVATE? you are kidding. if so, MS would have come with this phone 7 before iPhone in 2007...

Look, I'm not a fan of MS or anything, very far from it. And I used the term "innovate" loosely. I'm not saying this is revolutionary or anything like that, but it's something DIFFERENT.

You have the iPhone.
The iPhone knockoffs.

And now WP7, which doesn't look like an iPhone knockoff.

I'm pleasantly surprised MS didn't decide to copy Apple on this one, even if they are way late to the party.

That's all I'm saying. Plus I'm a fan of the UI, although I don't think I could ever bring myself to get a WP7 phone...*shudder*.

Android ? Try Symbian and J2ME. 3rd party apps have been here for cellphones for close to a decade if not more now.

None of them had a fraction of the success apple had with apps. They weren't the first, but they created the modern and successful model of a thriving third party development platform

I just really don't like the look and feel of this platform. Not my thing at all.

No, I don't want my personal info on my lock screen. That is why its a locked screen.

No that is not why it's a locked screen. It is because Apple says its a locked screen. Do you really think that if Apple was to open up the locked screen for info, there would not be a way to turn it off? Like Wifi, Notifications, Bluetooth?

INNOVATE? you are kidding. if so, MS would have come with this phone 7 before iPhone in 2007...

innovate? like apple did when they purchased fingerworks? that kinda innovation. other then that what did apple innovate back in 2007?

This would have been news in 2008. Too bad it's 2011 soon.

Yeah. The interface is decent enough now, but I have serious doubts about its ability to scale and sell apps when you have a very low density home screen where it's going to be laborious to do anything outside the highly integrated included apps.

But here's the billion dollar question, however:

How the heck does Microsoft propose to actually profit in the mobile phone business?

They have never, ever made a dime in profit on licensing WM and its predecessors, and now you've got another vendor giving away pretty good phone software with liberal licensing terms this go around, and another vendor with a very highly profitable software/hardware system, and a third vendor with a lot of enterprise lock-in.

And MS is going to make money doing this time how? Licensing this for peanuts and pimping Xbox live? Really?

Sure HTC and Droid and now M$ home screens innovativeness vs. HDR, AirPlay, etc.

Have you used the music player on an Android device. You scroll down to the artist you want to listen to, carrot over to their albums, carrot over into an album to the list of songs. Want to swipe back to the list of albums. Oh wait, can't. Gotta use this physcial and small return button. Everything Android when you get deep enough, you must press a button to go back a level. No swiping. Please!!!! It's a joke.
That is true. Android is a UI nightmare. Even Symbian manages these simple things better than the Jesus OS from Google.

Under-customizeability can render a product useless too. Have you looked at the Settings in an iPhone lately ? The thing just scrolls on forever. What is one pane more or less with the already dozens of pages...

It's a bit of a stretch to try and call the iPhone useless

i actually saw the whole keynote and windows phone 7 definitely has some very progressive functions! some way ahead of the iphone (and it's hard to say that because I'm a fanboy :) ). Their focus on doing things fast is really good and the phone does actually helps you do to things faster. and ofcourse there is no giant appstore yet, but there wasn't one the first year the iphone came out :)

I predict the app store for windows7 will be huge.
I've done very rudimentary iphone app development and it's not exactly simple... I've been messing with the WP7 app dev kit stuff and it's sooo much simpler. I think mainly because I am more familiar with Visual Studio, and Objective C++ was a huge learning curve that I didn't have the fortitude to climb.

I think a lot of developers will agree; and you might see more developers jumping into WP7 dev than did iPhone, just because it's more familiar to them. Admittedly this is a market that didn't truly exist before Apple created it (the market, not the idea of apps on phones). And hey it wouldn't be the first time Apple invented something and everyone else made money from copying it.

Now that doesn't speak to the quality of the code written by casual developers like myself, nor how numerous the fart apps will be, but then the Apple APP store has it's share of garbage too, so that comparison may be for moot.

Dear oh dear. What the hell are you talking about? Can we further tease out this tragic little analogy and ask when Apple is going to murder thousands with two atomic bombs, get bogged down in pointless wars in countries such as Vietnam and Korea, or lie through their teeth about WMD just so they can attack an oil-rich region? Oh, and what percentage of home computers run windows?

So many negative comments! Competition is good and Apple could learn a thing or two from the other people in the smartphone market. Personally, I think Apple had the best hardware and the worst UI. I'd love the today screen from way back in Windows Mobile 5 (I think it was 5) on my iPhone. I like the customisable home screens on all the other major Phone OSs. Why Apple decided to have the application-centric home screen and navigation is beyond me to be honest.
Don't get me wrong, I don't really want a Windows phone, I just want Apple to look at the market and see that they way they have designed the UI might just not be the best for all users.
You've given us truly terrific hardware, Apple, now please give us the software to match.

You mean MS is helping Apple to improve their iPhones. That is a good job Steve B. Apple thanks you ! Keep helping Apple and stay behind always !

it's enterprise ready. my company will buy them.

This thread is pure comedy in a bag. Many posts from insecure Apple enthusiasts who have nothing better to do than slam the competition.

Posts like Cut and Paste being old news. Really? Apple just got it a year ago - after many many many phones had it before.

Look how many phones there are - total confusion. Right - because it's much better to only have ONE choice when you're looking for any device? There's nothing wrong with having choices. Whether it's a mac or pc. Whether it's Verizon, Sprint, AT&T. Whether it's the iPhone or other phones. Everyone has different wants and needs from their device. If they ONLY had one phone - they might not sell as many - or they'd hear the same constant complaints Apple iPhone users have as to why their phone doesn't have X feature.

People saying it sucks without ever actually using it.

and so on

I'm not a troll. I enjoy my Apple products. I'm just constantly amused by the incredible lack of maturity and blind devotion to a manufacturer that it warrants such childish retorts. But I shouldn't be that surprised - should I?

What's really interesting is how many apps they had on day two. The growth of the app store was meteoric

Yeah, on day two we got the push the button to hear a laugh track....
If you can't admit there were initially a slew of useless apps approved I am not even going to try.

Then don't clutter it. On the other hand, I'd like weather to go along with date and time.

Isn't choice grand ?

Then don't put it there. And I fail to see how "Rain/Sun" and "degres" are personal info.

Seriously people : Choice. Look it up, it's a nice word.

And I choose the iPhone, there is a reason for that, and it's mainly because of its interface.

In 2010 you need to do what Apple didi in 2007: change the game.

This aint it, obviously. But then again, this is Microsoft we're talking about, so no surprises here.

I don't need clutter on my home screen. I unlock it and use it and go on my way. I use my folders, my multitasking, and it all works quite well for me.

If I had a message count of how many unread e-mails I had on my lock screen, then I wouldn't need to unlock it and go on my way just to see if I have mail. One click to see if I have mail... less clicking - Steve Jobs should love that idea!
