I'm sorry but these companies are soooo annoying Lol . Once one does something, the rest scramble and release their own versions, but they end up doing nothing revolutionary .

How is it possible that companies can come out with their own versions so fast ? Do they all know what each other are working on ?

The tech industry is great, but it seems so boring at the same time .

Before iWatches it was smartphones. Before smartphones it was feature phones. Before feature phones it was regular cellphones, etc, etc.

With each new technology phase all the companies will eventually be doing the same thing. The constant arguments about who was first about simple hardware get tiring. Like, I can at least understand arguments about UI or whatever, but a product is a product, other companies will make one if the market demands it.

Not sure why some still rmtry to insist that Microsoft makes sub par hardware. The Surface Pro series from a hardware point of view is very impressive with the 3rd generation being slim, fast and very robust.

The only downside for many is again Windows 8.x

The device will flop in the consumer market mainly due to Microsofts own doing. Which I will be going in to depth about in a future blog post.

Alot of chubby kids who don't get enough exercise, but that's another topic :)

Also a lot of chubby kids who were exposed to BPA, pthalates, and other toxics while in the womb -- altering methylation, disrupting their endocrine function, and leading to chronic obesity, but that's another topic :(

MS Smartband + XB1 + Kinect 2.0 + Xbox Fitness

Could be a pretty compelling home fitness setup.

I have heard of the iWatch speculations before I have even seen any smart watch at all. Apple takes it's sweet time, and it needs to in order to bring a product that stands out.

The rumors of an iWatch only began in late 2012. Before that, there were smart watches already in the market (Pebble and Motoactv, to name two) and Google had a smartwatch patent they filled back in 2011 approved already. The smart watches space was already with momentum.

As far as I know, Jobs never said anything about smart watches, at least not in the sense of what he said about TVs and Cars (which he openly said he wanted to make).

By all counts, the iWatch seems to be the first truly post-Steve device that Apple will release.

who cares, like all their hardware it will be subpar.

Plase find me a review that says that any Microsoft Surface, specially the Surface pro 3, has subpar hardware.
Or even that Microsoft keyboards and mice are subpar harware.

Pleaseeee

You mean the xbox that had a failure rate that was at times over 50%?

You mean an issue that was solved 5 years ago? You should go out more :p

And do you want to talk about cracks in the white macbooks or the G4 cube? :D

----------

Sigh. iWatch has been known to be in development for at least 2 years, probably more. Just because other people rush something out to beat Apple to the punch...

Aside from being a RUMOR, you talk like iWatch is the first smart watch or something. They have been around for decades, just technology was not there yet.

For instance, 10 years ago Microsoft created the Spot platform that, among other things, allowed the creation of a few smart watches.

If I were to buy a wearable, I'd be much more inclined to buy one that is multiplatform. At least Microsoft will have that to differentiate itself.

.......and let s not forget, it will come with a kickstand and removable keyboard.
Take that Apple!

If......

you build it, they come.....(parody of "Field of Dreams").....:D.....Seriously, if Microsoft makes a wearable capable of cross platform operation with good quality and price, I can see a scenary where a lot of people would be tempted. After seeing some offers in the Google I/O Conference, like the Moto 360, even I (not fan of wearables) am tempted....:D...

Cynically speaking and thinking, the sharks had smelled the blood in the water.....

:):apple:

You know that Microsoft already had a smart watch few years back before you had even heard of the word "smart watch"?

Why argue with someone who reads with closed eyes?

As someone mentioned earlier, Microsoft had a smart watch platform years ago. Ofcz it was ahead of its time. But idea was there. So Apple was not the first to think or do anything about it.
They may be the first to do it right though. Though I wouldn't count microsoft out also.

There sure is a lot of TALK about smart watches.

Looking at that watch in the photo, it seems like it would be awkward to read the time in that orientation.

Did you even read the caption of the photo?

We're going to have a slew of people going "how do I get it to show the time!?"

Because Microsoft completely understands UI design.

Ever owned a iPod shuffle 3rd generation ?

All companies mess up big time. To be fair windows 8 on tablet and phone works really well. They messed up desktop

I see you have never owned a first generation apple product ;)

There used to be a joke going around on MR that first generations users were legends as they were beta testers .

Yeah cause no one would want one for the iPad

Competition is a great thing, the more that enter the market, the better for the consumer. I am all for it .

Anyone else find it interesting that all these companies are investing all this money in fitness related equipment in a country/world that is getting more and more sedentary?

That's sort of the point. As our lifestyles and environment get more and more sedentary there is a significant - and growing - portion of the population that realise they need to do something about it.
Going to the gym, running, playing sports etc are all fine - but we're now increasingly becoming aware that this is not enough (http://www.howtogeek.com/93822/sitting-is-killing-you-infographic/).

So the emphasis is on N.E.A.T activities (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis - everday movement, in other words). Breaking up long periods of sitting is the most important part. Following that increasing the frequency, duration and, to some extent, intensity of those active breaks (in that order) should be our focus. The step-trackers are all about that and many find them to be highly motivational - or at least significant awareness raisers.
With NEAT under your belt (pun intended) it's only natural that you'd want these devices to report on other aspects of health in a similar way - and so we see the explosion on the market of ever more sophisticated devices such as these.

Overall I think this is a good thing. Strictly speaking you don't actually *need* these devices to live a healthy lifestyle. But, let's face it, it's really hard in our modern environments. You might say it's an "uphill struggle"! So anything that keeps us focused on these issues and how we're doing is a big step (sorry, more puns) in the right direction. If you've been sitting on the fence, or generally just thinking "meh" - even if you consider yourself quite active already - I'd encourage you to give one a fair trial.

What is completely horrible about microsoft is their marketing.

Haha, don't get me started. I remember they sponsored 'Under the Dome' on Channel 5 and every time one of the characters used a digital device it was either a Surface or a Windows Phone. But they'd make it stinkingly obvious such as a close up of the Surface logo for like 10 seconds or something dumb.

Not to mention to poor, poor SFX that show had to start with.

Ps. I've noticed Apple quietly sponsoring lots of TV shows and films recently. Purely through maybe one character using an iPhone and the Apple logo being clear to see for a small scene or one of the characters just saying "iPhone" or "iPad."

And nobody would want a stylus either... http://store.apple.com/us/ipad/ipad-accessories/business#!

How many people have spent hundreds on sub-par pen input devices for the iPad capacitive display? It is clear that people want iPads to be more productive. Apple has not been listening.

The rumors of an iWatch only began in late 2012.

Wrong. The rumor of Apple making a wristband computer started long before Apple made 2010 iPod nano which looks exactly like a watch, hence the excitement.
