I will crap my pants and suck my own ****..

If this happens I'll crap my pants, suck my own ****, and miserably watch as apple tries to produce enough imacs for 95% or so of the market.

m$ is trying to do this to scare the government, and the economy. They know that most of the technology in the US is dependent on windoze, and that if they pull out, there will be chaos. They're also trying to make it look like they're the ones being picked on. m$ is acting like a poorly raised child. I can see a scandal/bankrupcy/disaster bigger than the enron screwup.

m$ has built up windoze by making a cheap copy of the Mac, and patching it beyond all reason and logic. When m$ goes out, it's going to be with a bang. The longer they wait with this anti-trust settlement, the more people are going to hate them and try to sue them. They stole so much technology, and used so many bad 'ethical' business practices, that even though their marketing is great, they no longer have anything worthwile to market. .Net is going to go down the drain, because there is not one internet strategy that can cater to everyone's personal needs. IT DOESN'T EXIST!

As for Apple porting os X to the x86 platform, it may be a good idea or not. First, tons of people would have to embrace it. Apple could change it around to work better for people accustomed to windoze, and then slowly, make the true Mac version a lot better, and stop updating the PC one, so that people would then just buy a Mac. The only thing about this, is that in 5 years or so, people may not even care about what OS they use, just as long as it does what people want it to do.

I just feel that m$ is going to fall, and it's going to affect every one of us. Elgruga is right, they will make enron look like petty shoplifting. Brace yourself guys, as mac people, we're going to have to tough it out, and hang on to what we love, and that's our beloved Macs :)

I dont think it will happen. Even though it would be the greatest thing in the world for microsoft to stop windows. But ITS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

I WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH I WISH

MS is full of crap as always.

There has been a program called IEradicator from some guys at 98lite.net that has been able clean IE out from every version from 95 to 2000.
Some dudes can provide a FREE solution that MS says is impossible and would cripple their company to implement...ridiculous!!!

Gates and Ballmer have plagued the world long enough with thier monopolistic enforcement of sub-par software!
I really hope the judge sees this bullying tactic for what it is and calls their bluff!

WHAT IF...

What if Microsoft bought the judge?! That bastard Bill would do it too. GRRR.....I hate microsoft. they're always up to something.

Someone should be standing by the courthouse to get Evil Gates with another pie if they win.

Anyone remember the pie? That was great. I wish I still had that video clip...

i remember the pie, i also remember "monkey-boy balmer". when i played that clip, people literally left the room screaming.

It would be amazing if the judge called their bluf. I would crap my pants on the spot and run around to everyone who has ever told me that the mac was doomed just to say "windblows finally sucked itself dry and left you nothing. bwaaaaaa ha ha ha"

to bad its only speculation.

"Why, no, Your Honor, we aren't an abusive monopoly, and to prove it, we'll let you hand us one of the few markets we don't totally control. No, no, of COURSE this isn't a none-too-subtle attempt to bribe the US political machine with free stuff for the underfunded educational system.

"What's that you say? The public overwhelmingly saw through... I mean... misunderstood our intentions (which are, of course, totally pure)? I just can't believe the American public are that intellig... er.. cynical.

"Well, I'll tell you what. If government-sanctioned strengthening of our position in the educational market isn't enough to allay concerns that we are an abusive monopoly, then we'll just be forced to pull our product off the market.

"No of COURSE that isn't a threat. If we thought pulling our product off the market was a threat that would not only be practically an admission that we are a monopoly and we know it, but it would also mean that we are stupid enough to actually wield that monopoly power against the very court which is currently investigating our alleged abusive monopolistic behavior. I mean, how arrogant would that be?"

Wouldn't that be nice

This is like the rich kid in school that says his class mates can no longer play with his stuff if they don't bring their sisters.

I really hope (but don't expect) that Microsoft will go through with this, and we'll be rid of the ugliest, stupidest, most expensive general use OS in history.

Have you actually seen XP? It makes your eyes hurt.

I hope the prosecution has some nous and figures out how to use this ridiculous, self-incriminating statement against Gates.

Anyone know anything about anti-trust law? Any chance that Gates will be forcibly relieved of his ill-gotten gains if M$ loses? Windoze pulled + Bill broke: now that would do a huge amount to renew my faith in justice!

I've got it...

The court will force M$ to stop windoze, but force them to provide funding for the BeOS... No no, that actually was a bad idea, cause then M$ would acutally "have" a good OS!

I don't mean to be negative, but Microsoft is in trouble because it has the majority of the market and has as part of its software an internet browser. Because a PC has to have an operating system, microsoft put their browser bundled with their OS. As such, competitors had a hard time convincing consumers to buy a product to replace something they already had.

Now, imagine if Apple stepped up to the plate and increased its market share. What happens then?

No offense, but if Apple held 95% of the market now, the case against it for antitrust violations would be far easier than the one against microsoft. Apple bundles all of the i-software in with its OS. It also requires hardware it sells rather than working on competitor's hardware.

If the planets align and Microsoft's stranglehold on the computermarket ends, Apple will have to be very careful to avoid getting hit with the same problems MS is fasing now.

Now that the lawyer in me has spoken, I have something personal to say. F*** M$.

No offense, but bundling and integrating are two completely different things. MS integrated IE into the OS and wouldn't let OEMs take its shortcut off the desktop until recently. The iApps are not integrated, if you don't like them, trash them and use something else.

You are absolutely correct in that M$ integrated its software so that computer makers couldn't remove them, and that Apple does not do that, however, my point is still valid. If Apple becomes the dominant force in the consumer level computer market (however unlikely), it will have an enormous target on its back, just as M$ has now.

Not because Apple is bad, or is doing something that is wrong, but because it would be the deepest pockets. (Speaking from experience, attorneys salivate when a client comes in and wants to sue a defendant with deep pockets)

Luckily, now that I work for the big bad wolf, the depth of your pockets doesn't mean anything to us. We'll squeeze the turnip so hard, blood will come out! So, remember to pay your taxes!

Wow.

Wow. It'looks like Bill is standing offstage with a gun to his Daughter's head or something. This guy is FREAKED OUT. I think Ballmer doesn't make an efficient Gerbles. Bill needs a more compitant showman to run his Youth Camps.....er.....Developer conferences.

whatever happens, im sure as soon as this article is released microsoft's stock is going to plumet.

Apple wouldn't be a monopoly.

Even if M$ was to pull windows and Apple was somehow able to aquire 80% of the computer market, they would not be an illegal monopoly. M$ used bad acts and bad faith when establishing its greed infested monopoly. However, if apple was able to get that market share by their merits then it is legal.

If anyone is curious about the details on M$ check it out here straight from the department of Justice http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/f1700/1763.htm

so this means they are admiting that their new software is doing the things that the states are sueing for???? SOUNDS LIKE A CONFESSION!!! DOWN WITH MS

Sooner or later...

M$ is going to fall sooner or later. I don't think M$ is actually going to pull Windows from the market, doing so would be sucide to the company. They are just saying this to put fear into the court and full judges heads with the question "What if?"

Do we need M$ to survive in the computing world? Hell no. Would the pulling of Windows off the market cause some chaos? Yep! Sure, Apple would benefit from this happening. In fact, if Windows was pulled MacOSX would take over for sure. It makes the most sense for users of all types from small businesses, govt, schools, consumers. The large corporate people would stay with and move more to Unix and Linux.

My question is Would Apple be ready for it? I think so, but the world would be in choas. Everyone would panic...What now? What happens to this new fleet of systems I just bought? People would be forced to switch and for most the MacOS is the only comparable system choice for 90% of consumers.

Apple would have to license clones. There is no way they could supply that amount of software and hardware. If they did not license clones, they would still gain market share, but the other PC builders would jump to someone else that would license their OS and Apple would be where it is today.

I don't know if they would have to port the OS to Intel and AMD however. They could also license the PowerPC to the companies. If they did this...imagine what would happen to IBM, Apple and Moto and what would happen to our friends over at Intel?

I think Apple hardware would sell well as long as they were seen as the best as they are now, but if there were clones with OSX and a PowerPC with a lower price tag, it would lure a lot of buyers if Windows was to exit. The key here is to license a limited number of companies. For example if Apple, IBM, and Sony all got the license to build PowerPC's with OSX that would be enough to claim the market share. Let Dell, Gateway, and HP/Compaq rot away, which would happen if they were to loose Windows.

Just my thoughts on this...

Embedded version of Windows?

I don't get it.
Microsoft has available an imbedded version of Windows 2k and XP for building into other devices beyond personal computers.

Go to the MSFT site and search under "embedded".

So, they can build a version of windows which doesn't include all this other stuff, like instant messaging, Passport, IE, but at the same time claim that Windows won't run without it?

I don't get it.

It's called "talking out of two sides of your mouth".
Tout your ability to make an OS for embedded use when it's convenient (profitable), and claim the impossibility of removing IE when your ass is on the line with the DoJ.

Thanks for the link. Makes for a surprisingly interesting read, even written in legalese. The last few clauses are especially damning of the whole M$ enterprise:

"36. Neither the antitrust laws nor this action seeks to inhibit Microsoft from competing on the merits by innovation or otherwise. Rather, the Complaint challenges only Microsoft's concerted attempts to maintain its monopoly in operating systems and to achieve dominance in other markets, not by innovation and other competition on the merits, but by tie-ins, exclusive dealing contracts, and other anticompetitive agreements that deter innovation, exclude competition, and rob customers of their right to choose among competing alternatives."

etc... etc...

So seedy! So true!

Isn't it great to be a Mac-Head? The other side probably has no idea what they're missing!
