Given that the iPhone currently allows you to set either Google or Yahoo search (with Google as the default), it's most likely that if this rumor were true, Bing would be the default, but with the others remaining as an option in Safari settings as it is now.

Yahoo search IS Bing now since the deal,so no real change at all.I do prefer Bing's privacy policy, though I still use Google.I may switch yet over that.

Don't do it Steve. HUGE long term damage for questionable short term gain.

Where is the love from having Eric EEEEEE. Schmidt on your board for years?

Feeling a little used? Trying to throw the baby out with the bathwater? :apple:

all the fanboys hated Intel until Apple switched over. Now they love Intel. I predict that once this happens the fanboys will love Microsoft. Not like Bing is not on the iphone already

Bing absolutely blows!!!

C'mon Apple, stop being a lil girl! Just because Google is giving you some competition in other arenas makes you want to associate yourself with Microsoft. Bing sucks!

Shame on you!

They better not switch the Maps app to Bing Maps. We finally got traffic and streetview in Canada and now that would vanish. But I have faith that Apple knows Bing sucks and will continue to ally themselves with Google.

Wow. I'm a huge Apple guy. I've using nothing but Macs for 15+ years. My first Mac was an LC III and I remember setting friends up on hand-me-down Classics way back when. I'm 100% Apple through and through. You couldn't pay me to use Windows. But you people have some serious issues. It's just a search engine. Relax! And it's configurable. And Google is, in fact, the enemy. Microsoft took over the desktop two decades ago. Google is trying to take over everything. Absolutely tee-totally everything. This is a very smart strategic move on Apple's part... if it's true. Which I hope it is.

Bing is actually quite good

To all the people who are complaining about Bing... have you even tried it? Sure, it returns different results, but that's a good thing.

I use Bing as my homepage because it's way nicer to look at a carefully chosen photo of the day than a plain search box. I still use Google in my search bar, but this lets me mix up my results a bit.

You should give it a try.

Helping Microsoft gain any sort of relevance in any market is a sure fire way to extinguish competition, not promote it. We know what Microsoft does with relevance. Sames goes for Silverlight. The last thing we need is to give Microsoft any kind of control over any kind of web technology, be it search or media or even browsers (look how long it took the web to get back on its feet after MS tried to lock it down... oh wait, we're still stuck with IE6...).

Last time Apple did a deal with Microsoft, they were at their lowest and backed into a corner. They had no choice. Today, they're on top of their game, they don't need this and consumers and the world don't need it either.

This is why conspiracy theorists should be banned form the internet. I know a duoply can be formed, but this is a search engine we're talking about. I'd be more concerned about that old bread at the back of the fridge.

You keep saying Google is a search engine, but it's way more than that. New fronts... new fronts. Apple has big plans to get in on an emerging market, and Google is a competitor in this market.

It's not about conspiracy theories, nor is it about what Apple or Google actually intended to do. It's all about the law. Google and Apple were already investigated by the FTC for their ties with one another: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/05/technology/companies/05apple.html?_r=1

Why do you continue to suggest they keep exclusive deals with each other and undergo more scrutiny and investigation by federal authorities?

Google want to control the whole market. Look at google books, maps, search engine etc.

I think it's a good move. Bing indeed can be helpful and I'm sure it's gonna be better with time.

So I don't mind that at all. You still should be able to change your favourite search engine.

Perhaps, like the headline says, Bing will be the DEFAULT search engine. Hopefully users can change preferences to another search engine.

i hope apple gives us the chance to change to whatever search engine we want.

dang, mattwolfmatt was one second faster. well great minds think alike.

Whaatt? lol.. google may be their worst enemy at the mo but microsofts bing is quite simply appalling.. Why would apple do this? has microsoft suddenly became their friend lol... :s

Riddle me on how you figure this is a strategic move on Apple?

Also, how do you find Google the "enemy?" Most of their features are free. Google has been providing free service(s) for you and me for years, and also Apple has benefited from them tremendously now and in the past. I seriously want you to enlighten me on how this is a strategic move from Apple. I think it's a stupid/selfish move by Apple - Bing sucks!
