The article says "default," not "only." so presumably you can still set google. No big deal.

Tell me why it sucks.

Since you have been advocating so much. Here, I'll tell you why.

1. I have used it before. It never gives me the results I wanted. Google's "I am feeling lucky" gets the result I look for in a hit.

2. Displays old results, as in their spiders trying to catch up with the web. Go ahead try it. See how long a thread here (new one) takes to be listed in Google or Bing. I bet Google will have it up and running in 20 mins max.

This makes no sense to me. A good part of the iPhone's popularity is due to it's usability. So why would Apple want to shove in Bing as the default over the better Google? I think if Apple moves away from Google it's going get people thinking more about the Google phone. People want their Goog.

I realize Bing would just be the default, but most consumer do not want to go mucking around to change search engines. They just use the default. That is why its so powerful being the default.

BAAAARRRRFFFFFF!!!

that sucks. that means i would have to tweak the settings to get Google back.

Google = search
Bing = decision??

google = clean, simple, efficient
bing = cluttered, messy, waste of time

There is a reason Google is very popular.

Exactly. It is not hate for Microsoft, it's simply they don't put out anything relevant or innovative. Everything they make is a me too! deal.

A good example for that, Windows Mobile 7, very late and comes to combat the Android and iPhone OS. It's not a new OS, it is a fix to help against. Lame because MS used to be leaders...

Bing is a horrible, horrible search engeine as well as the rest of the live products. There better be a way to change the defaut back to google if this goes through. Using Microsoft is like having sex with a prostitute with no condom.

Actually it makes perfect sense to me. In fact, the childish way that all of you are reacting is part of the reason why Apple needs to do this. Not Bing, mind you. Bing is not good enough. But everyone needs to stop treating Google like they're some unstoppable and irreplaceable force, because that's not even close.

Google is on its way out Apple's back door and I welcome it. Time for Apple to stand up as the major player they are, and not bend to the worthless existence of Google. All Google does and has ever done is try to undercut all opponents, while making apparent "alliances" that they take advantage of. Apple got garroted the worst, by having their CEO infiltrate until he was kicked out.

Part One is coming next week: Google Maps is leaving the iPhone entirely and will not be back, because Apple bought their own Maps and have developed and updated their Maps app for 4.0 (or possibly sooner). The "iGuide" moniker likely has something to do with this....

Part Two will be replacing Google search on the iPhone, and logically, Safari desktop. I'd could use Bing if that's all I was given, because I'm not petulant immature rag like some of you, but hopefully default simply means default and not "only", so I don't have to listen to the rest of you.

pretty much required, no?

This is a defensive move, folks. Apple bought that map company and an Ad company for the same reason... they have to make it so they don't have to depend on google. They can still stay with google as long as the terms of the agreement benefit Apple, and if google knows that Apple *could* leave, they'll treat them a lot better with pricing etc.

Isn't this just replacing the default setting? I assume we will be able to change the default back it to Google. If so, I don't care about this turf war.

I don't know about other people, but despite the fact that all my browsers have a search bar specified with Google search, I still open up a new page and go to Google.com to do my searches… this includes all my phones. Therefore this does not change anything more me.

As for maps, maybe Apple can get map data from Nokia now. :p

That makes a lot of sense...

Microsoft is more a competitor to Apple than Google.

They compete in the OS space, browser, mobile computing, search, map, zune, etc.

This is a made up story IMO.

And what does that make iPhone 4.0? Is that just a fix to help against?
:rolleyes: good grief

Microsoft would be better off NOT updating their Mobile OS because that would make them look better?
:rolleyes:

Obviously you're not following reality these days then...

As some have already stated, bing's maps are FAR better, especially the aerial view and google has NOTHING that compares with the bird's eye view that bing has. Crisp images and far more updated than google.

Do you have any idea how google search works?

Because it sucks big time.
If you do a search you want it to find what you need, not what is popular ;)

Google want to control the whole market. Look at google books, maps, search engine etc.

I think it's a good move. Bing indeed can be helpful and I'm sure it's gonna be better with time.

And Microsoft doesn't want to control the whole market? :rolleyes:

I completely agree with this. Forcing a switch to Bing would be the equivalent of crippling our software! Boooo!

I think this is a good move for Apple. I am an avid Google user, but to be honest, they have too much of my data and I fear for my privacy. The problem is Google services are just awesome. I have GAFYD, push email on iPhone, I use google search, voice, maps, finance, everything.

I wish Apple Mobile Me supported @yourdomain - I would certainly pay if I could use their MX servers for my mail.

I like Bing (dumb name) on the iPhone, and I have slowly been using it on my mac. I hate to say it, but I think my privacy is safer with Microsoft. Apple needs to distance themselves from Google.

Does anyone know of a good alternative to using Google Apps for your domain in terms of "email"? I want push email, calendar and contacts that can sync across devices (online, mac, iphone) like google. I don't think it exists.

Say it ain't So

Bing never gives me the same data when I try a search as Google does.

Goolges search return is always better, I have turn bing off.

I live on search for my job!!!!!!!

Keep google
