Google = Censorship! So be glad there will be another option. I don't understand all you MS haters. I do not have any MS products on my MBP but I am quite familiar with windows due to my job and it does not as annoy me as you do when I read 90% of this thread.

What MS haters? Even the non-fanboys say the Bing is utter shiiite.\

Bing is horrible, it cant even get my Location right.

This is crap. Bing sucks. This can't be true! Don't make a deal with the devil Apple! You'll regret it...

Are you kidding? THIS is the Apple/Microsoft deal that will ruin everything? Not even taking into consideration the fact that Apple actively supports people installing Windows on their Macs?

Do you have a reason for it "failing miserably"? Or are you just being a fanboy. Want to know something funny? Bing has a far better privacy track record than Google.

Lots of people do, the main one being that it assumes the wrong location. For me it also brings up a lot of irrelevant searches. Gmail personalised searching is a nice feature.

Bing hasn't been around as long as Google. Thats like saying a new computer OEM has a better track record than HP even though they've only existed for a short time compared to HP.

I had never really looked at Bing maps until today and surprise, surprise, I think it's better than Google's offering! The satellite photos are generally newer and crisper, and I really enjoy the Bird's Eye view. I boycott Google street view anyway (for my own reasons), so lacking that in Bing is no big deal. In terms of search...eh, I'll still have to go to Google on occasion, but the more I think of it, the less Google needs to be in my life. Microsoft may be 'unoriginal' and 'soul-less' in the things they do, but at least I don't have to worry that they're hoarding public information for the US government (or are they?!)!

They probably are.

ahem... Apple just did a LOOOOOOONG time ago. In fact without Microsoft, Apple wont be here today. That's a FACT. :(

Without Apple, Microsoft wouldn't have anybody to rip off.

Oh wait, there's always the KDE Project. ;)

---

Apple didn't have to make a deal with Microsoft. Apple was in a position to crush them with the Quicktime/Win Player lawsuit. If SJ so did choose, he could of erased Microsoft.

People bitch about it now, but all it would take is Steve Jobs waving his hand in the air and pulling the ol' Jedi Mind Trick on the fanboys and then everyone will love Apple for choosing the "obviously superior" Bing.

There are two search engines in the world. Google and Bing. Apple and Google are fighting one another on new fronts in the mobile/cloud sectors, obviating the need for them to part ways. (Unless you WANT to see them being investigated for possibly shady business practices)

Wait so just because Google and Apple are now competing we now all forget that Apple and Microsoft are competing.

Being Competitive argument doesn't make any sense. They're all competitors on all fronts.

Holy crap no!!!

I don't want to "google with Bing"

But seriously, Bing does have some nice features. I can't say I like the commercials.. it makes all the other search engines out to be totally lame. I will miss it saying "google" in the search bar for Safari, though, if it WERE to replace google.

I'm actually kind of curious to see what happens. Though its already annoying enough to have nearly everything Microsoft as the "industry standard". If it happens in search engines too... God only knows what will happen.

EDIT. Microsoft didn't "save" Apple by buying stock or loaning them money. They did that to settle out a lawsuit for the copied code from QT in WMV. Apple had just bought NeXT for a crap load of money and had plenty of money to spare.

Jesus... people really need to learn to do their research.

This is FACT.

This is truly the WTF-rumor of the year!

True Story, some random person that came to work to upgrade some software when Bing first launched.

Some Random Person: "Microsoft can now be as nosy Google... with style!"

Me: "I bet you $100 that it will say you live in Australia, because America doesn't even know that New Zealand exists."

SRP: "I'm sure they're smarter than that, they managed to fix vista."

Me: "They only fixed it because they took a few pointers from KDE4... and they made Vista."

SRP: "Oh Yea, Whateva." Goes onto Bing to have a look at KDE pictures. Brings up escort service pictures... for Australian Websites.

Me: "Lovely, I'm sure those women would be flattered. Give me my money!"

It makes sense when you read the word "new" before "fronts."

Apple and Microsoft have been competitors in the Desktop PC market for decades and will always be so. Google is competing with Apple now in the mobile market (whereas the two were somewhat 'unrelated'), so it would look kind of fishy if Apple's product, competing with Google's product, benefited from Google's intellectual property and vice-versa, especially considering that Google and Apple recently shared a board member. (Ballmer and Jobs don't get together on the weekend and decide how they're going to strategize together and "compete" in order to maximize profits and create a duopoly)

But google is a free service for anybody backed by ads. There is no real rock-solid reason to not use Google.

But google is a free service for anybody backed by ads. There is no real rock-solid reason to not use Google.

Google got its start being a free service backed by ads. Now Google has developed the Google Nexus One, a direct competitor to the iPhone.

See, Apple came out with the iPhone, packed with Google-developed features and technologies, and in the ~3 years it's been out, it has completely altered the face of the mobile landscape, and taken massive market share away from other competitors such as Nokia, RIM, Samsung, etc... Suddenly, Google develops a smartphone OS to compete with iPhoneOS... ok, it's getting a bit shaky here, because Google technology is heavily integrated into iPhoneOS, Androids primary competition. Add to Android a whole new handset featuring many of the same physical characteristics and features of the iPhone, and suddenly you've got Google fingers in every mobile pie imagineable, while the platform developed by Apple benefits greatly by any developments from Google, which are in turn spurred by the sales of Apple products. In this case, the two companies appear to be competing, but behind the scenes, they both benefit from each other due to technology and feature sharing, giving them no real incentive to be better than one another, but giving the both of them incentive to team up and destroy the other competition, all while "competing."

In addition to that, ChromeOS is emerging as a platform.

As soon as it became evident that Google and Apple were stepping on each other's toes in this new market, they decided to part ways to avoid suspicion of operating a duopoly.

See, a monopoly is bad because one company controls the entire market.
A duopoly is worse, because two companies control the market, giving the illusion of competition and choice, while making backdoor deals to maximize profits and minimize real competition.

This is why conspiracy theorists should be banned form the internet. I know a duoply can be formed, but this is a search engine we're talking about. I'd be more concerned about that old bread at the back of the fridge.

I applaud this move. Google is getting too cocky, they need competition in search. And Bing is quite good (at least in the US).

If Apple makes this move, we will not see a Bing logo on our iPhone screens. It will be Apple Search and we won't even bother fiddling with it, because it will work seamlessly. Bing will be the backend, like Yahoo's. Unlike Yahoo, however, Apple will also control the ad sales.

What really worries me is the question if Apple would sell out my iTunes customer profile to advertisers this way. So far I thought I pay for Apple services instead of using free alternatives in part because Apple guarantees my privacy. There has to be a wall between iTunes commerce and search ads.

Apple - give the user a choice of whatever search engine they wish to use.

Its not difficult!!

Regarding Safari: gives you a choice of 2 search engines, but yet, Firefox, any you want! Why can't Apple do the same as Firefox?

Holy crap - soon Apple will be dictating what toilet roll its users should use!

Apple has never been about giving the users options or choice. Imagine what would happen if Apple continues to expand...

If Steve says so, I'm willing to go use the bing search engine.

I've been slowly disliking Googles tasteless Maps & Search for awhile now. Plus Steve mentioned that since Microsoft & Apple (Excuse me) Apple & Microsoft are the only two major software companies left (especially with marketshare) whatever the two decide to do becomes the industry standard. [For people who want to refute this just go back to 1997 MacWorld keynote]

I hope Apple shows us there new " Apple Maps " App [Apple did acquire a map company last year & also posted job openings for the position] & then Allows us user to try bing out for iPhone.

So If Steve tells me to use Bing then I'll do it.

The quicker I can stop using Google the better, cause they are nothing but
a bunch of weasels especially their CEO. I saw the CNBC specials of "Inside Googles Mind" and I wasn't impressed. I mean they take care of their employees well it "looks" like, but besides that there just a bunch spam scammers looking for new ways to gain Information about you and sending that info to the Gov't is the next step... Then they tout how the brighest minds work there and that getting hired at Google is better then working for NASA or the Gov't! .. I say bullcrap, the "best" and brighest are people like myself and friends. Artist: meaning graphic Designers, software developers, photographers, Actors/Actresses, painters, poets. Those people really drive the innovation around the world and at one particular company APPLE we've been inspiring other industries and people for a decade now and it's not going to stop. Google in 3yrs will = TRASH wait and see.

Frankly, I couldn't care less what the *default* engine is... As long as I can bloody change it! That goes for Safari on OS X too, it's ridiculous that I have to install hacks to use Google UK.

If they do make Bing the default search engine, I simply wont be using it. Within hours of Apple releasing it there will be hacks to change it back to Google, but it does beg the question, why enforce something on your user base that is so obviously going to be unpopular? And none of this "it's steve's phone he can do what he wants" rubbish, my choice of search engine is mine and mine alone. Sure, short term monetary gain, thats no price worth paying for long term pissed off customers. /rant.
