While the bing search engine's results aren't quite as good, I'd love to have bing maps. The directions are better and the maps more up to date. Also, it seems to run just a bit faster.

I don't like Bing. :(

I want GOOGLE!

I don't care if Google kills babies or the staff took a dump on Steve Jobs' lawn. They offer AMAZING services.

If they make it configurable, yeah.

If they force Bing on us, I'll use something else. Bing has horrible technical search results compared to Google.

Please dont take away Google.

First it was AT&T and now Win. What is next? Apple, please stay true to your values.

Bleah....

I tried Microsoft Bing for a little while, and quickly went back to Google.... Bing just wasn't finding enough hits for technical queries I was doing, trying to research I.T. problems and such. It feels more "generic home user" oriented, like it could find celebrity gossip news and sports score updates just fine, or that review of a new movie release you want to read about .... but not so much FCC ID#s of specific motherboards to find obscure drivers for them.

I could see Apple preferring to use them, though, since Microsoft does still sell products like Office for Mac, as well as releasing free OS X software like the Remote Desktop Connector. They have an entire "Mac Business Unit" inside Microsoft. While Google ALSO releases OS X versions of a lot of their stuff, it often feels redundant (like Picassa, which is more a "competitor" to Apple iPhoto than anything else), or is second-rate (like their Chrome browser, which wasn't even out in a Mac version for months after the Windows version was released).

Replacing Google on Safari with Bing won't thrill me in the least. Hope that doesn't happen.

People, seriously. Read the article.

They aren't taking Google away. They're just making Bing the default browser. All you would have to do is go to Settings>Safari, and then change it back to Google. No one said anything about completely removing Google. Right now, you can change your browser to Yahoo! if you wanted to.

And why does Bing suck so much? Have you even tried it? It worked quite well for me.....

don't do it

Apple and Google seemingly need to pull their respective heads out. M$ is still the real enemy; and so what if both Apple and Google have products/services in the same space? They can, and should support each-other. Whatever fall-out you guys had, get over it!

I like Google search, maps, mail, and other services. I am not about to give them up. If Apple drops Google services from iPhone, I will be dropping my iPhone and buying an Android phone (which are finally good enough to replace an iPhone).

I'm also still torked that Apple hasn't approved the Google Voice app. Knock that chip off your shoulder Apple, and do the right thing. Wussies.

If these Apple/Bing rumors are true, given that Bing is now the search engine on all Verizon phones, is a Verizon iPhone not to far behind now?

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Normally I ignore all the idiotic posts found on these forums, but this one myth just irks me. For some reason, it has still not died, despite being entirely incorrect.

It's almost as bad as the people who still think Macs can only use one button mice...

I'm not going to get into all the details with you, I'll let you do your own research, but having said that- Do you think 175M is going to save a company that was bleeding billions? That's billion, with a "b". As in, 1,000 Million.

It wasn't the money.

It was Internet Explorer and Office.

Sorry, but it's true: MS saved Apple's bacon and kept the ship from sinking, which bought Jobs the time he needed to get the company back on track.

Revisionist historian fanboy tears of MS hate be damned.

I'll be jailbreaking my iphone again if that happens.... Of course, someone would need to actually come out with a hack for Safari to re-enable google on the iphone. This is just POOP TURD!!!!!!!!!

Seriously. When I'm reading things like "MS is the devil", I can only hope these people are still in their teens and will grow up eventually. Fanboys really deserve their title, I guess.

As for the story; as long as Apple continues to offer the choice to use Google instead, I'm fine with it. Bing is a pretty decent search engine, but I dislike their interface. Just give me something clean and tidy, like Google.

This time around, Apple actually has the foresight to know who their true enemy is (Microsoft, like IBM in the 80s, is so passe and Google, like Microsoft in the 80s, is the real threat to their business) and all the fanboys who've been raised from the teet hating Bill Gates can't see it.

You are probably right. It's obvious Microsoft is a has-been. Yes, they still sit like a fat king atop their OS monopoly, but the technology world is moving on without them. They're clearly on the downhill leg of their journey.

Apple and Google seemingly need to pull their respective heads out. M$ is still the real enemy

I think Microsoft's power over the tech world is largely over. That said, I'd prefer Apple and Google kick them some more before starting to punch each other.

It wasn't the money, and this is the silly argument most of us have a real problem with.

Yes, Office was critical to Apple's survival, but could Microsoft really kill a profitable product (Mac Office) only to destroy a competitor in the OS space without antitrust legal ramifications that would have made their IE bundling issue look like child's play? I seriously doubt it.

looks to be that apple cares less about what users want and just does what ever they figure gets them more money. this is going to suck big time.

um...that's pretty much what they are REQUIRED to do, by law! they have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders to maximize profit. why do ppl seem to think that a company, any company, should "care about their customers" for any reason other than profit?

Don't ever attribute corporate actions to any motive other than profit! Donations to charity? - there is a business case that demonstrates that the return on the "investment" will be increased sales due to customer goodwill generated by the publicity. They don't do it because they "care". Same for "giving users what they want" - if the business case says that changing to Bing from Google will net more money in the long run than any short term losses from unhappy users - then they will go to Bing.

I am a huge fan of Apple products and I prefer Google over Bing, but u have to be realistic about how these decisions are made.

As long as I can still google with Bing, I'll be satisfied.

Something like 70% of all internet searches are through Google. The general population knows about Bing. They've tried it. They realized Google is still better. Bing is an inferior search tool compared to Google.
I have both the Google and Bing Apps on my phone, and the Google App, by far, returns back better search results, both general and local. :apple:

NO!

I was going to write far more than that, but I don't think it's necessary!

Apple, please listen to your users on this one.

Won't touch Bing with a bargepole. I used to like Microsoft Live maps, but since it went to Bing it has just p*ssed me off.

This would be a serious mistake for Apple. First off google and Apple need to work out their differences, its unfortunate that Google has a phone and platform now which means they don't want Apple using their own services. Google on the Iphone as products (maps, search, and other) need to stay.

BING is absolute ****! microsoft has done nothing to better the search engine and typically are not innovators but followers, google and apple set standards, microsoft follows.. this isnt good for apple if they have to ditch google..

Why is Bing absolute ****? Please provide reasons.

I've just performed half a dozen comparison searches with Google and Bing, and both provided me with similar, if not the same, results.

Anyone?
