It's just a search engine.

Sure and a Mac is just a computer. But neither Google or Macs are a simple commodity item like milk. Google is best in class. I've used Bing. It's OK, but it doesn't always give you the best results on top. Scale that down to a 4 inch screen and its even more important to get the answer you want in the first few lines.

spot on.

I like your idea of choosing a search engine when you first start the browser.
Just because Apple and Microsoft cooperate doesn't mean its bad.
Apple needed microsoft just over a decade ago.

I know where your coming from but can I just delicately rectify the myth;

Microsoft needed Apple not to go bust just over a decade ago, otherwise there would be about 15 different companies today all of which used to be Microsoft.

Not to piss in anyone's cheerios but without 175 million Gates gave Jobs Apple would be gone, sorry but that's a fact !!! I prefer Google but I don't hate Bing.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Normally I ignore all the idiotic posts found on these forums, but this one myth just irks me. For some reason, it has still not died, despite being entirely incorrect.

It's almost as bad as the people who still think Macs can only use one button mice...

I'm not going to get into all the details with you, I'll let you do your own research, but having said that- Do you think 175M is going to save a company that was bleeding billions? That's billion, with a "b". As in, 1,000 Million.

With names that sound like cars or impotency pills. Excelsia. Allargo. Primetia.

And didn't that money settle the QuickTime theft situation?

Eff bing! Certain things MS will never do good, and one of them is search. Like a broken record, as long as we have the option to still use Google, I will be OK. When Apple sees that no one is actually even using bing, hopefully they will change things.

And what does that make iPhone 4.0? Is that just a fix to help against?
 good grief

Microsoft would be better off NOT updating their Mobile OS because that would make them look better?

Wait what are you:

1. Implying
2. Saying

Some people make posts that are more confusing than helpful. Oh and 4.0 is not a fix, it was a long due overhaul.

"Currently, the predominant business model for commercial search engines is advertising. The goals of the advertising business model do not always correspond to providing quality search to users. [...] we believe the issue of advertising causes enough mixed incentives that it is crucial to have a competitive search engine that is transparent and in the academic realm. "

- Sergey Brin and Larry Page "The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine", 1998

I'm in the process of emiminateing all Google products from my life because I'm done with big brother Schmidt googleing me.

That said, come on Apple, give us a choice like Firefox does.

I love Google's terrain option, but have you ever tried Bing Map bird's eye view?

I just searched my house. Vastly better with Bing bird's eye view. Clearly it uses a newer and better satellite photo.

I am shocked, actually. Never expected that. WTF old photo is Google using?

I love all the fools here upset that Apple is getting friendly with Microsoft and spewing their undying love for Google.

This isn't too different from the Apple of the 80s, who ignored Microsoft and focused on IBM as a competitor. Looks where that got them.

This time around, Apple actually has the foresight to know who their true enemy is (Microsoft, like IBM in the 80s, is so passe and Google, like Microsoft in the 80s, is the real threat to their business) and all the fanboys who've been raised from the teet hating Bill Gates can't see it.

It has nothing to do with fanboyism. Apple is not switching to bing because it is "superior technology" or "for the benefit of their users". They are switching because of the growing competition with Google.

Indiana Jones - Last Crusade.

Apple products are notorious for giving users an incredible lack of choice. He's basically got the full Apple Lifestyle Kit going on and can pretty much only use Apple products if he wants to do anything digitally, and he's complaining about not having a choice in search engines...

Oh yes, the Apple control - Apple's way or nothing - you will use our products how we want you to use it.

Yes, but do you think Apple's doing it to harm their business?

People should be happy if Apple is making a move that benefits them in the long run, whether they're shaking Microsoft's hand or not.

Many posters here see Microsoft and whine, regardless of technology. And for the record, I don't think Bing is half bad, but I do use Google.

A big bouquet of roses to Peace who actually get its (this was on page six).

The screen on the iPhone, or your computer, is the same as the store shelves of a grocery store: they are where the eyes are and because of that they can be monetized.

Google makes a fortune from advertising just by attracting you to its search results. Billions are at stake.

I had to muddle through pages of rants to get here, but here we are. The current revenue model is advertising next to the services you actually want. Google has a simplified launch page paradigm and most others have a cluttered launch page paradigm. Google is right. Bing should partner with AltaVista on this so actual logged content is vastly deeper.

The whole point of all this posturing is Google is perceived as having a monopoly similar to what Microsoft had at one point.

Apple wants to be your hardware and services delivery and selection system. The "services" will largely be offered with a big take going to Apple with the AT&T, Music, and now search engine, franchises as prime examples. Every individual major service on an iPhone will be a franchise.

What will be interesting to see is how many are "company stores".

Rocketman

Absolutely.

Bing's birdseye view is actually low level, angled aerial photos taken by a company called Pictometry. It's like Street View, but from a low flying airplane.

Then Microsoft created an algorithm that stitches the photos together and displays and rotates them in realtime with Silverlight. Pretty cool stuff.

There's no need for all the kneejerk reaction against Bing. People can dislike the Windows OS and still use Bing.

It's a separate group within Microsoft, and MS has a lot of young kids these days coming up with neat stuff. Not everyone who's having fun works at Apple, after all.

NO ***** WAY!

If this bing crap is the default search engine, I'm hoping that Google will still be an option in the settings.

If this really happens, I'll KILL MYSELF!

I love how my iPhone has google maps and how safari has google in the window.

I understand the competition but Google is better!

Would this mean that mail could lose compatibility to sync with Gmail?
