Man let this not be true. Google is a great search engine, bing is just..ok. At least give us an option to continue to use google!

Bing is an ABSOLUTE CRAP, a makeshift attempt at a search engine by MS. Apple would be wise to not have it as default (as an option it's fine, even if I won't ever use it)...we've had enough with the pathetic IE as OS X's initial browser. And yes, I've tried using it...Google is still much better.

Recommendations:

1 - maintain Google as default;
2 - put Bing as an option for the mentally-ill;
3 - drop Google as default (but keep the option) once Apple develops its own super engine.

But in this case this stupid rumor is true, I can only say one thing:

APPLE IS DEAD. AND SO IS MS.

p.s.: 1563 Negatives

Is this close to a negative record on MR?

DING DING DING >> Guess what he has just won Johnny?? An all expense paid trip to Idiots R Us.

Yes that's right folk. Because this retard failed to remember that internet access on the iphone or any other internet capable device allows you to pick what ever search engine you want, he is now being sent to Idiots R Us for some treatment of his Apple Fan Boy syndrome.

the end.

However, remember that before iPhone came along smartphone users were free to install any application they wanted. Apple has a tendency to "revolutionize" a lot of things. What if use of search engine becomes one of them? :D

'Default' doesn't mean 'only'. It just means that it will be the search engine in Safari out-of-the-box. You will easily be able to change it back to Google or to Yahoo!

It doesn't say anywhere that the others wouldn't be an option.

Overreact much?

Apple didn't have to make a deal with Microsoft. Apple was in a position to crush them with the Quicktime/Win Player lawsuit. If SJ so did choose, he could of erased Microsoft.

Some here are kicking and screaming about doing a deal with the devil and what not, conveniently ignoring the fact that Apple has iTunes and Safari for Windows, and that MS has MS Office and other apps for OS X too. Oh, and the fact that you can run Windows on a Mac. I never understood this whole rivalry, from a business perspective it is completely meaningless (they target different markets, plus, MS is mostly a software company).

Believe what you want, just don't drown in a cup of water. You are making a HUGE deal out of something stupid. You can switch to any search engine anytime you want.

No, it isn't. My post was very clear in that I am against MS's engine as default, nothing else. If Apple has it as option, fine.

If it's both DEFAULT AND the SOLE engine available, then we're talking about an apocalyptic scenario: I will go out and buy a brandless beige PC box as my next computer.

And will it run Windows?

Here is what default means:

default |diˈfôlt|
noun

2 a preselected option adopted by a computer program or other mechanism when no alternative is specified by the user or programmer : the default is fifty lines | [as adj. ] default settings.

If there are no other options, it wouldn't be called the default option. It would just be the search engine.

For example, Safari isn't the default browser on the iPhone. It's the only browser.

You forgot to admit that there might be no option "presented by the programmer" as well... ;)

So please tell me: what do you think Google Search is NOW for Safari? There is no other choice available. Besides, it's irrelevant if Bing is the default with some other choice; I don't want a preference to MS's crappy technology to be so clearly presented by Apple...it just doesn't match.

Are you talking about Safari on the iPhone?

If so, there's a choice between Google (default) and Yahoo.

Except there is another choice available. Right now. Go into settings and you can change the search engine to Yahoo. Two options currently. Google and Yahoo. Google is default, but it takes all of 5 seconds to change it to Yahoo if that's what you want to do. And if Bing was default, it'll take you that same 5 seconds to change it to Google.

Bullshizen

Google and Apple still have a solid relationship. If their is any truth to this it's just to have bing as a default option in addition to google (ie. Microsoft wants to pay Apple to get Bing on the iPhone built in instead of an app). Yahoo should do the same.

Google has their hands in everything, it seems, they don't alienate their partners just because their competitors. They would be all alone then!!

No, I am talking Mac. I don't have an iPhone.

This thread is about Safari for iPhone, not for Mac.

If you want an alternative search engine for Safari for Mac, download Glims, and then you can choose any search engine you want. See photo below.

And you misread the definition: It doesn't say that there would be no option presented by the programmer, it says: a preselected option adopted by a computer program or other mechanism when no alternative is specified by the user or programmer.

This means that if Option A is the default, and the user/programmer doesn't select Option B or C, Option A will be the selection.

Yahoo is already in the mix. They are already an option. You can change the iPhone Safari search engine to Yahoo right now.

Again, I am talking Mac, especially since such an agreement may easily trickle down to Safari for computers.

As for the second point, hasty reading: I stand corrected. In any case, I don't want Bing as the default engine for either platform.

The view that Apple and Google have a solid relationship is not true. Current contracts dictate what's on the current iPhone. Those contracts are coming to an end.

Why come to an iPhone thread to talk about Mac? Perhaps you hastily read the article as well.....

And FTR, I don't like that the only search engine for Safari for Mac is Google. There should be a choice.

I am not that dyslexic, it's because of this:

"If the negotiations are successful, it could also mean that Bing could eventually replace Google as the default search engine for Apple's desktop version of Safari as well."

LMAO @ all the sheep who voted negative. Wow, that is insane.

I don't care though, Safari is junk either way, Firefox is slowly becoming a great standard.
