It's a pretty good ad. Although it's not the same kind of comparison as the Apple ads (which focus on the operating systems), it does deal with the way that Apple have indirectly stereotyped Windows users as being boring, unoriginal and stupid.

Ok... I still don't know what "Welcome to the Social" was supposed to mean. Also, the updates to the Zunes from last week were completely over-shadowed by Apple's press event. MS could go a long way if they figured out how to create that kind of buzz for a product line.

"welcome to social" doesnt mean anything. How many have a zune? how many use the wi-fi sharing? not many because they added those WAY TO EARLY!

Not all that bad...

Actually it is not all that bad. But, promoting that I'm a PC does not necessarily mean Windows. PCs can run Linus, Unix, OSX or any number of OSes. OSX you say? Yes of course! After all, is my Macbook not a Personal Computer?

Then just do it and shut up. Most computer users could care less about upgrading, and just buy new systems when theirs becomes long in the tooth. Just because you and maybe 1000 others might want a cheapo "midrange" or "headless" Mac doesn't mean that Apple is going to make one for your vocal minority.

This whining about a cheapo Mac is getting old. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, so just shut the hell up about it already.

Hahah what a rage!

Windows users are thought of that way because of microsoft them selves tring to beat apple so much that they made huge mistakes and had to start over (longhorn development, 2005)

Doesn't make much of a point

The problem with whatever point Gates is trying to make here is that he's showing everyday people that have everyday jobs that involve the use of a PC. Well the sad part is that it says nothing about why a Windows machine would be the ideal choose for these everyday people?

Let's see, I'm a PC and I blog, I'm a PC and I do design tall buildings, I'm a PC and I connect with the rest of the world, I'm a PC and sell sex. Well all of that can be done on ANY computer so why choice a Windows machine??? This ad does nothing.

At least with Apple's campaign you always know when the Apple commercial comes on, they always use a white background with 2 guys, or a white background with an iPod or iPhone. Apple's ads are catchy and fun, that's what sells.

Another poster said Apple should now change their ads? BS. When the competition addresses your ads (Microsoft to Apple) then you must be doing something right.

Anyone who models or associates their "lifestyle" or "image" after others, especially actors or other "celebrities", are just brainless idiots anyway.

dude chill out

Apple themselves have distinguished themselves from being PCs with their 'I'm a Mac and I'm a PC' ad campaign. It's their own words.

Apple is not Microsoft's problem

Microsoft outsells Apple 30 to one in the OS business. But they brought a product to market that was so flawed that their customers rejected it. With seven years of development by the world's preeminent software company Vista failed to deliver on the promise to be an innovative, secure, more productive and stable replacement for XP.

Now Apple has made a business out of pointing out all of Vista's flaws. It advances Apples Macintosh business some, but it really rubs Microsoft's nose in it.

It's not the customer's fault for failing to "get it", and it's not Apple's fault for pointing to Vista's problems. Microsoft's should focus on creating a better product, not on an expensive ad campaign.

It's obvious to me you are not a good candidate for a Mac, and you know what, that's perfectly ok. You are a power user. The vast majority of computer users have to idea how to build or upgrade a system. Most people simply buy pre-configured systems from Best Buy or Walmart. In my opinion, these people would be just fine with a Mac Mini or iMac. I wish my parents had one!

I'm glad you've had a good experience with Windows. Professionally, I'm a software developer that works in the Windows environment. Personally, I own an iMac. I switched because I gave Apple a chance by going to their store and test driving the systems. Over time I discovered many cool feature of the OS that I wanted to use (Expose and Front Row being my favorites). During this time I also went to a Dell kiosk where the sales rep simply tried all the old tactics to sell me a system. I never got to "play" with Vista and that drove me back to the Apple store and I very happily bought an iMac.

P.S. And this is coming from a former Mac Hater.

I came off a little Mac-bitter. Let me skew it a little more positively: I would love to own a mac. While I'm just starting out in the industry, it has immediately become clear to me that Final Cut dominates video right now. But, it appears that Mac seems to think that there are two types of computer users: People on a budget who aren't doing much serious work, and creative professionals willing to spend $3,000+ on a workstation. They're giving people like me, young professionals who need powerful systems but don't have the cash for the beast that is the Mac Pro, the shaft. Why isn't there a mid-range tower?

Sure most people can't build their own systems, but I'm sure most people would appreciate the ability to take their system in to have a bigger hdd, a memory stick, or hell even a CPU put inside. And some people wouldn't mind doing this at home.

Awesome commercial.

I'm a PC too. One that has never had any problems whatsoever. I've learned more so, it's the users fault for mucking an operating system up more than anything, not the OS.

SO! Macheads, do you agree?

"Windows... Life Without Walls"

Why would i need windows if i didn't have walls?

Way to completely miss the point.

I wonder how long it takes for this add campaign to be called :

WINDOWS Life without FIRE walls.

Its incredible to fight back Apple with the same line, eveyone that sees or hears this add will think instantly of Apple by association....

This is SAD.

Very good point. They need to SHOW the things you can do, not just tell about it in a backlot in some studio. Apple may speed things up with their ads and try something diferent while keeping the existing campain. who knows.

amen man. First off they need to stop controling how we use the machine. If we want our own security suite let us with our freaking out and telling us "YOUR COMPUTER IS AT RISK! NO ANTI VIRUS!"

These are much better than the Seinfeld ads.

Still, Apple ads are much clever on a creative standpoint.

I am a Mac. :D

So you think it makes sense for Apple to charge $500 for 2 gigs of memory? They only get away with it because people are complacent enough to let them. I don't think it's just a "vocal minority" that would like pricing to be consistent with value.

yawn. It lacks humor, and doesnt hold my attention. Also, its not very original...copying Apples "Im a mac" commercials with "im a pc" very creative Microsoft....

I'm impressed that you can ascertain my state of mind and mood by a forum post. Brilliant one there, Mr. Psychic.

I'm angry at hunger. I'm angry at disease. I'm angry at violence. I laugh at idiots with low self-worth who align their entire lives with commercials, celebrities, and the endless marketing of everything around them. Sad, yet hilarious.

As I said, most people could care less about memory upgrades. Only tinkerers and system builders really give a rat's ass about that stuff. Most people who buy computers to use at home (i.e. what marketers call "consumers") would look at you like a moron if you mentioned the words "memory upgrade".

And having said that, only the stupidest system builder or tinkerer would not do their research and pay $500 for a 2 gig memory upgrade.
