Then just do it and shut up. Most computer users could care less about upgrading, and just buy new systems when theirs becomes long in the tooth. Just because you and maybe 1000 others might want a cheapo "midrange" or "headless" Mac doesn't mean that Apple is going to make one for your vocal minority.

This whining about a cheapo Mac is getting old. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, so just shut the hell up about it already.

Anyone who models or associates their "lifestyle" or "image" after others, especially actors or other "celebrities", are just brainless idiots anyway.

A little grumpy cause you're still waiting for the new Mega ST Falcon?

I don't think apple should (in my opinion) response. It's kind of childish. If I were them I'd just ignore them and make a spectaculair commercial which attrects people. Not because it's a response to microsoft but just because it's a good commercial. With that you can get people, not by being responsing on someone's commercial.

Their current ads are so childish, smug and pompous that they really couldn't do worse. Hell, I'm bit shamed of being a mac user when I see those ads.

I rarely give credit to MS, but these new ads are really great.

microsoft doesn't get it. we don't use macs because the computers and the people that use them are perceived as cool... we use them because they are superior in design, are stable, and are more efficient than anything that is out there today. if microsoft wants to play the cool kid, then let them, but their products still suck.

Totally perfectly wrapped up! :)

I see all these positive reactions. I don't get them. What is so good about this ad? It's just a collection of people saying "I'm a PC".

Why should I buy a PC? Because all these weirdos have one? That does not qualify as being a good reason.

Could anybody give me good reasons why this is such a good ad?

microsoft is simply saying that PC's are not just used by people in offices in suits (like PC guy in the mac adds), but by people of all walks of life.
It doesn't say anything about the quality of their product(s), but that's not the point of the add, the point is to break the stereo type image which was strenghtened by Apple's add campaign.
Original it is not, but I think it may work for them.:apple:

hi i'm aPC and I've got no idea that there is a different operating system to Wi ndows !

Hi, i'm a pc ! (but in two months a whole bunch of us are going to announce we've switched to macs)

Pc: Hi, I'm a PC <and cut> so what's this add for ?
Prod: for microsoft
Pc: oh, the people that do office
Prod: yup, and windows
Pc: windows ?
Prod: yeah, it's on your computer
Pc: it is ?
Prod: yup
Pc: oh, where ?
Prod: when you turn it on, you get the screen saying windows
Pc: I just get a picture of an apple !

People want to have answers why they should take mac instead of windows. It becomes clear through the videos.

All windows can say is, I'm a pc. So what. I don't get the point of the commercial. They don't say why it's better. You need to be smart to know what they want you to tell. Cause apple can do the same and go everywhere and everyone's says: I'm a mac. A little bit useless I think.

That's not all windows can say - it's all windows is intending to say through these ads. The "I'm a Mac" ads are typically intended to promote a particular feature - yes, while building/reinforcing the brand - these ads are different in that they are solely focused on branding Windows. They aren't meant to promote a specific product or feature, but to sell the Windows and narrow the Apple appeal.

These ads are the equivalent of Pepsi running an ad with people saying "I'm a Cola too".

They are meaningless without reference to the Apple ads, and therefore you have to be reminded of the Apple ads - which means these M$ marketing dollars are actually reminding people of Apple products. Dumb.

As usual, it's simply MS demonstrating that they can't innovate on their own (Seinfeld), so they imitate instead. All Apple does now is move onto their next marketing campaign (which I'm sure they have waiting in the wings) and MS look like they've turned up very late to the ball indeed.

Imagine how bad this would look for MS if the next Apple ad is actually something concentrating on the design and usability of Macs. All the while MS are still stood there shouting "I'm Spartacus!" to an empty room....

Better...

simply because it is direct and gets to the point.

But the problem is, even with the ‘second phase’ it still doesn’t mention anything about the product itself! Which is the whole point of an ad: to sell a product.

It is as if Microsoft wants to side-step the major issue of which is the better operating system: Apple’s OS X OR Vista? Isn’t that what the ad watching consumer wants to know?

So the ad wants to send the message: all kinds of people use PCs. Duh! Of course all kinds of people use PCs (or a Microsoft OS), they have around 90% market-share! So Microsoft really thinks consumers have the preconception that all those users are bald, fat and wear glasses!? Kinda wasted all this money to state the obvious, really.

So Microsoft, you still have not convinced me of what I want to know about Vista.

1. Is it a great product?
2. Will it improve my productivity and simplify my life?
3. IS it better than competing products like OS X? If so, why?

Will this be the ‘third phase’?

That's a cool ad! :)
Hope Apple's next campaign wont be so oversimplifying and patronizing. MS finally got it, and hit it where its weak. I can't wait for a new Get a Mac concept :D

No it's not. Quite the opposite.

Explain how not. It completely lifted Apple's format (very intentionally) and then ran with it. Apple didn't reference any Microsoft advert to make their ads.

Fair enough though.... when Microsoft doesn't get any help, what do we get...? Seinfeld and Gates.

Explain how not. It doesn't bash Apple, but it has just completely lifted their format and then run with it. Apple didn't reference any Microsoft advert to make their ads.

It's not their format at all. Yes it references the Apple ads, that doesn't mean they're using the same format or saying "me too." You said it yourself, it doesn't bash Apple, and it also doesn't try to be all "look I'm hip and cool!" like Apple does.

2008. The year of the PC.

As ‘PC’ boldly declared at MWSF 2008.

“So… what have you got planned?” enquired ‘Mac’.

“Oh, we're just going to copy everything you did in 2007”.

In hindsight never a truer word spoken. They are even copying the ads now and can't even execute those with the same style, humour and panache of the originals. As for Apple, they hardly need a response. They've won this particular contest as soon as Microsoft released these copycat “me too” ads.

And what are these meant to say:
“You should be individual and creative in the rest of your life but when it comes to computing you should use exactly the same thing as everyone else because Bill Gates and Eva Longoria and some random guy with a beard tell you to?”

people_ready. Wow starts Now. Perceptually Connecting. All were completely lost on consumers. No doubt Windows without Walls will follow.

Final thought: Funny how Vista never gets a mention either. Maybe because most people in the commercial still use Win XP.

The ad itself is not bad in my opinion, it's fast, sometimes funny, and straightforward. It want's to show that "cool" people use windows. However it doesn't work as a phase 2 to the Seinfeld ads because it has absolutely nothing to do with them. Apart from that at least they could have used different people for the three ads. I watched all three and while I thought the first one was good when I arrived at the third one I got tired of the same ocean explorer, the same teacher, the same celebrities.

But the problem is, even with the ‘second phase’ it still doesn’t mention anything about the product itself! Which is the whole point of an ad: to sell a product.

Umm... no it's not. There are product ads, and then there are branding ads. Some of the most remembered marketing campaigns in history are branding related. It's surprising how quickly people forget the "Think Different" campaign. Does anyone remember ever seeing a Mac in those? Or the advantages of Macs? Wow...
