I know, but I personally think they are doing it all wrong.
This ad isn't really saying anything except "I use it too, so you don't have to be ashamed"

That's not what it's saying, unless of course you view it from your Apple-distortion glasses. It's saying PC's are versatile, they're everywhere, and people of all kinds, races, religions, political views, and professions enjoy using them. Much better than "look at me I'm a Mac and I try to be so cool and hip and dress in jeans and fit in!"

I'm a PC. And I have erectile dysfunction.

Sorry, that's what these commercials remind me of. I'm a PC and I'm not going to let it slow me down anymore!

I agree with that, but the design, and use of it are completely different then its not copying. A Copy is an exact duplicate.

Besides it turns out that Apple 'supposedly' didn't get it from PARC after all. This guy supposedly invented the mouse working for another company, in conjunction with NASA. And he doesn't give what year, but Apple licensed it from the company he developed it for, for $40,000. [info, below the pic of his mouse.] So, i think we might be wrong?

Father of the Mouse.

You're nitpicking. MS didn't copy the mouse from Apple any more than Apple did from whoever else. The use wasn't completely different, it was a very similar UI, but that's not the point. Companies innovate and then other companies innovate on top of those innovations. The original poster was accusing MS of stealing the mouse which was just complete BS and ironic given all the things that Apple copied/stole/licensed too.

Don't worry - all you need to do is go hop on a motorcycle and you'll instantly get your manhood back...

ROFL, awful. MS has nothing on apple's ads. they're lame, unoriginal and boring.

You've never been quite understood satire have you? :p

What's with all this "nuhhh MS copied Apple AGAINZORS!!"

Of course they did, the ad is designed to be a thumbed nose at the adverts that a lot of tech users - OS X users included - find smarmy, annoying and in many cases just untrue.

Great ad...very good response to Apple's ads.

Microsoft may be "following" Apple's lead, but, they kind of have to at this point. There's nothing wrong with that.

I use a Windows PC at work and a Mac at home. Both typically work fine, but both have their problems as well. I must say that my work PC is used much more and has many more 3rd party apps installed and HW attached ( emulators, analyzers, etc. ) and it still works pretty darn good. ( Windows XP )

I'm glad to see a response from Microsoft, maybe prices will drop even further from some competition?

"I'm a PC, and I have AIDS" would have been great to see. Maybe next time.

Better than the old stuff they were tossing out there.

to quote someone on another forum in response to these commercials.

But Microsoft doesn't sell PCs. They sell software.

Actually, they don't even so much sell software, as they use their monopoly power to force hardware manufacturers to include OEM copies of Windows on every PC they sell.

These commercials don't do anything to help the MS brand. They show a bunch of people being "different" and "unique" or whatever...by using the same software as everybody else. Windows is the default crap that gets shoved down your throat when you buy a bargain computer. It is literally impossible to make something that 95% of people have for cheap and are forced to use at work "cool." "Cool" is exclusionary. Trying to make Microsoft cool is like trying to make using manilla envelopes to save your tax receipts cool. Trying to make Microsoft cool is like trying to make tying your shoes cool.

Honestly, you know what they remind me of? The commercials that try to make something lame like voting or recycling "cool." It just can't be done, and it comes off sounding insincere, because the advertisers themselves don't believe it.

Hi,

I think it is a clever response to Apple. Now when people hear "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" they will associate poor PC with that lady who teaches children or that architect that designs green buildings.

I prefer the Apple ad's way of telling me what Mac does differently to the PC, which was missing in this "I'm a PC" ad.

Time to find a new theme Apple. Though you did get a two year ride on it!

I have to say, these are pretty cool ads.

A good response to the Mac ads in my opinion - not bashing Macs (like the Mac vs PC commercials do), but just showing people in all walks of life who use Windows to do what they do.

To be honest - I'm not sure I want Macs to 'rule the world' - from what I've seen lately as they are growing their quality has gone down slightly, and their ability to use their regimented style of control that has made their OS/hardware integration world famous.

I want them to do well, I want people to know how good Macs are - but I don't want Apple to get sloppy!

Maybe I'm influenced by the complainers on these forums, I haven't experienced many quality issues myself - but it just seems like there are a lot of things that have been going wrong lately (iPhone 3G issues, Mobile Me, cheaper panels in iMacs, yellow gradient issues).

PS I still love Apple.

(...) to say otherwise shows whether you're a blind fanboy rather than a reasonable mac consumer...

You have the same sense of reasoning as the makers of the commercial have. My whole problem with this ad is that it makes no sense at all. You could make the same ad where everybody would be saying "I think 2+2=5" which would not change the message of the ad drastically. It's ok to make a counter move (that is the idea of publicity) and the direct goal of this ad is not to sell products, but this ad looks totally pointless. The only thing they tell is that you should not prototype PC users which is something everybody already knows...

Credit Where Credit is Due

Ok so while I am a dedicated Mac user and will personally never go back to using a windows machine I have to give Microsoft some credit for this ad. Even though they are adopting the I'm A PC line that Apple started (shows that they cannot innovate rather follow) they did a good job at conveying that it was a Windows commercial this time.

They also did something that was really good for them. They showed people from all over the world stating what they do and that they are a PC. It is good to show that you can use a PC When blogging for Obama or studdying the human gene pool.

They did a better job at conveying their message this time than they did with Seinfeld in the commercial. However I do feel that they need to be more innovative and come up with their own stuff. Come on getting a Microsoft employee that looks like John Hodgman to say I'm a PC is kinda conveying that they are at the mercy of Apple and I do not think they intended that.

Anyway have to give them credit for a better ad and at least trying something different.

These ads are better than the Seinfeld ones. My only complaint is how they all refer to themselves as PCs. Makes me cringe. They're human beings who may use a PC. The Mac v PC ads represent the respective computers. I find it disturbing when human beings are lowered to the level of referring to themselves as inanimate mass produced objects.

I am not entirely sure why they are trying to address this particular issues directly, but it does at least have a point now. It seems obvious that PC's have "historically" made their way around the world more than Mac's for many reasons that are too numerous to mention. Perhaps that is why it is the subject of their ads so that Apple has more difficulty in counter-attacking. I still don't think it will have any real impact against Apple's "I'm a Mac" ads, or their momentum in taking over the computing industry. Microsoft simply dropped the ball with Vista (well, before that as well), and until they get something else out there that can compete with Apple, any campaign will be laughable at best.

Well you're clearly a Windows user with Mac stereotypes in mind.
The message that you say it is giving is so boring and unoriginal (and have done it a million times before) that they might as well have left the whole I'm A PC part out of it. It was suppose to be a direct response to the Apple Ads.

These ads aren't eye catchers which is what you'd want with a tv ad.
And since they really bring anything new to the table, they won't increase interest in Windows.

I like the part where the guy is in a shark cage, and he has a sign that says...

"I'm a PC. And I'm scared."

And scared he should be! If this is all MS can do to go against Apple's commercials, PC should be afraid. Very afraid.

Were the sharks supposed to symbolize viruses?

to quote someone on another forum in response to these commercials.

The irony of the quote you quoted is, if Apple had to put their OS on a billion different configurations they couldn't handle it either. Windows have a huge, huge job to make sure things run well, think of all the crappy little manufacturers that make little cheap bits and we expect them all to work without conflicts (that doesn't normally happen).

I have 4 Macs, no PC's anymore, so I am not a fanboy. But look at the issues Apple have with just one set of nVidia or ATI drivers that cause freezing, on a piece of hardware they write the firmware for? Multiply that by a million, do you think they would be any better or less hated by us?

I'm so tired of this debate. Macs are way better than PC's for so many things. But there are a lot of things that Mac's can't do, and it will always be that way in my opinion.

Beat me up if you must.

Gosh, just one more post before I keep working!

Do you honestly think that after the 10th commercial Apple's Mac vs PC was any more original? Just hang the same template commercial up and throw in some different lines?

How many cool features did you see shown in those commercials that Leopard can do over Vista? They just mentioned them. The whole theme was based on PC bashing, very unclassy.

PS Vista does suck though, and that is speaking from experience.

It's interesting that we now can see better the purpose of the Seinfeld ads. The entire purpose was to cement Bill Gates face in the minds of consumers-- make it iconic (I have read some other theories but they are far too subtle to be credible). Apparently the agency feared that Bill might not be sufficiently recognizable in the main series. So they created the silly Seinfeld series, which everyone watched because it was, well, Seinfeld. Because of this, BG's face went from being fair to very good as a brand placement.
